S-L-O-W Amundsen

Hi,

it's me or the whole process of just entering a simple destination (address) is horribly time consuming and distracting?

The filtering steps, such as that allowing to enter the name of a road, following the enter of a Town take ages, the GUI is so slow that it seems broken and it's almost impossible to enter a destination in a hurry or without a help kindly provided by a side passenger.

I typically play music from the other SD card, but does anybody have a similar experience?

TIA,

Yep mine takes Forever. it's completely impossible to set your journey before you start moving because it would take 10 minutes to start up and accept an Address.

Luckily I don't really use it unless I go on a long journey

Yep. I'm happy I tried it before I decided on which kit to choose - after witnessing the Admundsen first-hand I blindly signed for the Columbus on my order.

Yep, last destinations helps if you you've been there before, but then I guess that defeats the point of sat nav as you'd know where you are going! However, I tend to set the nav on longer journeys so that the traffic message system recommends an alternative route if there are long delays on your set route.

Is the columbus faster then?

Usually takes me a maximum of 2 minutes to enter a post code and get moving. Although the boot up time for the system itself is rather slow and frustrating!

Never had it take quite 10mins, but it can be slow, agreed. The worst bit is waiting for the predictive type texting to decide which letters are available to you next. Anyway of switching this off so you can just type in nice and quickly? Would half the amount of time it took.

Would be interesting to hear if Columbus is any quicker.

Columbus has the data on an internal SSD - so is loads quicker than the Amundsen which has data on an SD card.

Timed from switching ignition on, to getting directions for a brand new route- 2mins 10secs. Slightly different to 10mins, so i suggest you go and see the dealer.

If ignition is already on, and Amundsen is on a different screen, then- 1min 35secs.

I went for Bolero with iPhone mount and use Google maps. Operation is fast and bluetooth provides audio instructions through the stereo speakers. My kids hate it because Miss Google always interrupts their favorite songs. Much better than the built-in iDrive navigation system within my former 3-Series (which was a real pain to use), and maps are extremely accurate. Voice navigation is superb by normal satnav standards. My field of vision is also better/safer than when looking at the centre console/dash whilst driving. Columbus would have been nice, but a bit pricey for my occasional use.

Anyone with an iPhone/Android phone should try it before splashing the cash on a built-in or dedicated navigation device.

Its not the easist of systems but, there are a few short cuts you can use, mine came as standard on the car and looks a whole lot better than something stuck in a holder somewhere looking like an after thought/birth.

Wouldn't say its worth the money if you've gotta pay extra for it though.

...hmm, 1'35" stands nevertheless for "ever"... perhaps it's possible to dumo SD card data on a higher class one... (yes, I do have the original one)

My Amunsden in the Rapid is lightning quick and can't fault it so far [emoji106]

Yep, it's rubbish.  Even the postcode recognition is rubbish taking you only to the postcode centre, without the option of a sub road like every other system I've used.  I use copilot with active traffic on my iphone and have done now for thousands of miles.

I have an android phone and tend to use the free 'waze' app when the satnav in my passat is playing up. It's only useful when you have a data signal tho, which is not always available in rural locations

Agreed the Amundsen is really slow. Though like others have said, I do tend to use it on long journeys. Day to day I use my Android phone in a bespoke screen mount. So much quicker and has the advantage of live traffic info.

I have considered doing a self-upgrade to Columbus. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how easy/difficult it is?

The unit seems fine in my wife's Rapid. but did notice that there did not seem to be a separate SD card for the Nav, the only SD card seems to be for the Audio. If this is the case then the Rapid unit must run off a Hard Drive and is so more er, Rapid....?

My old Tom Tom 730 runs off an SD card without problems and is still quite quick when entering destinations.

I will try the Amundsen in my Elegance - when it arrives around Feb/Mch next year!
