Intercooler setups & turbos

Featured Replies

Right guys this may have been covered before. But I can't find anything on my phone search.

I was just wondering what FMIC setups people use. I've already had a SS one and wasn't a big fan as it's not on show unless you cut the bumper.

Was just seeing what people did instead and maybe a few pointers to help so I don't need to take my car apart to measure up and what not.

Photos would be great if possible.

And turbo wise. If I got a PD150 hybrid. Is that a straight bolt on. And would the intercooler pipes need to be changed/modified. And also is the exhaust outlet the same as my custom pipe is being out on Friday.

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks

Yeah plenty of topics and images in Brisky about these.....

Anyway, the 'cooler will only be on show if you make your bumper "wide mouth", but it will still be stuck behind the crash bar. People have removed them (unwise) others have cut out holes on their bar to allow more air to the surface of the 'cooler.

I'm running an Airtec 'cooler and is built very well and is huge! Easy to install but the crash bar still needs modding to fit behind it.

The pd150 turbo is bolt-on and I believe it's just the GTB turbo that will cause issues with 'cooler pipes/exhaust downpipe.

Surely if in a crash then the impact wouldn't be absorbed as there's no bar and potentially forgiving the engine back towards the Cabin.

correct but im not going to crash lol

Indeed, could be very nasty!

Even at side impacts or more towards the wings, the car would suffer very badly. Nothing stopping the chassis from bending or keeping the chassis legs firm in place. Very bad idea removing it completely!

Not like it takes much effort to make it fit or just put an ibiza cupra crash bar on.

You might not but as I've witnessed you can be the best driver in the world but it won't stop someone else who isn't from crashing into you.

To be fair the standard GRP foam filled impact pillow is more designed to stop pedestrians or cyclists being cut in half than actually protect the car, I'd settle for a fabbed steel tube across the mounts to tie the front together and protect the GRP front panel which will simply shatter in any impact, you could even chrome the tube to make it a feature or paint it matt black to make it vanish depending on your tastes. No bar at all just isn't smart and it may adversely affect the handling as well.

I'm not running one either at the moment.

What I was seriously thinking of doing was buying an Ibiza one which is smoother and generally nicer to look at. Then chopping the middle section out so that it doesn't affect the airflow to the cooler. Then weld some steel neatly across the top and bottom part of where it's been weakened to put some strength back into it but keep the cooler showing as much as possible. Paint it up and Bob's your Uncle!

Or another route I was thinking about would be to fit the standard crash bar back on and fabricate some brackets to allow a cooler to sit right against the mesh. These brackets could be welded to the original bar. It would look so much better if the cooler was further forward...

Not sure if its Vrs specific but its a big steel crash bar, as pictured on Jars car above.

The bumper is just a empty plastic skin, no 'crash pad' as such :)

My idea is to eventually use the legs off the current crash bar and then create a tubular buttress frame to join them together to give maximum airflow but still look pretty cool

Yeah be spot on that.

I don't want to relocate number plate, but do want more air through my cooler.
So thinking the same as you for crash bar, with brackets welded on for number plate.
Could bin the number plate surround then, and when goin on track unscrew the number plate for full flow through the cooler :)

correct but im not going to crash lol

Famous last words.

i like the look if i crash i'll break it for bits and buy another 1

So it is, it must be VRS specific since mine has the pillow, that may mean that it's even more important to tie the front together on a higher powered and heavier car.

Well from my experiance changing the front end of a crashed vRS, if you have no crash bar there isnt anything actualy joining the front two ends of the chassis legs, that big block called the radiator is held together on a plastic frame.

The only metal part (apart from the rads) is the steel plate which runs along the top of the rad pack/front of the engine bay with the intake hole in it. But thats about it.

Crash bar is there for a reason. and is significantly thicker/stronger then the rad pack.

I modified mine to fir the FMIC, which i was still worried about doing, because a modified crash bar is better then none at all!
