Expensive at only 3 years.

Featured Replies

Just had the car serviced just over 3 years old and 35500 miles. Car required disks and pads front and rear. Is this normal, seems a bit early for disks but could understand the pads. So  £660 bill just before Christmas. Lets hope that's all the expense for the next year, :(

Please don't tell me a dealer told you this and you actually went for it? They've been saying that for the last three years on my car and this year is the first time I've been borderline low enough to fail an MOT and that was on the rears!

That or you could be using the brakes too much, try reading ahead more and using gears.
But dealers do seem to like that kind of thing. Told my wife her Yaris needed two front tyres as they were dangerously low.........funnily enough, they weren't even an advisory on the MOT the day before!!

Wasn't  dealer was a well respected indy garage just outside Edinburgh. Wife drives the car every day so just got it done for peace of mind.

Seems a lot, what was the split between parts and labour?

FYI, my VRS has 42k at 4 years, the rear discs are badly corroded, no warning lights they just look BAD! I priced up the parts about £60 for 2 discs and pads....

£600?? Damn. You were robbed. I take it that price includes the service? Was it a major service?

Did my own brakes... Discs and pads, upgraded to MTec Discs and Mintex pads... All done for £200.

Just to clarify.....You paid £660 for a set of Discs and Pads inc.. labour?

I think he meant he said a service and both sets of discs and pads for that price. My car had new front disc and pads at 55k the rears are still fine.

So that leaves approx. £460 for an oil and filter change then....what did they put in liquid gold ????

I was quoted a supply and fitted price of around £600 for front & rear discs and pads earlier this year, so seems to be the going rate.

Decided to change my Superbs front brakes at about 75,000 miles, performance had dropped off .Still had loads of meat left

New pagid discs and pads from ECP was about £100 iirc

I'm spending a lot of time these days replacing cheap discs for genuine part's due to brake judder. Shame really people should not economise on brakes

Jeez that's a lot. I was about that for a 4yr service including cambelt and pump.

Brake disks are a garages best friend i.e. expect every MOT to say "Slight pitting to disks" and the garage to 'offer' to do them.

I'd be surprised that you'd need disks and pads at 35k unless you dive like an utter loon, drive with your foot on the brake or live next to the sea and they've rusted.

I changed my VRS disks at about 55k a year after the MOt station 'suggested' it and I think I was still overly cautious..

+1 for Pagid disks and pads, much cheaper then Skoda parts and I found them to be good.

I have the Pagid setup on my car and its easily as good as the Bosch setup it replaced....no problems at all..but cheaper

I had my front pads and discs on my Scout replaced at 55k. There was scoring on all the discs and they made a terrible noise when applied. I received an advisory about them in the two previous services. However with winter approaching I decided to change them at my local Skoda dealership for £450

Braking is nice and smooth now.

The OP needs to establish what was included/replaced during the service. Then he will havea rough idea if he was ripped off or not. Bare in mind most things do not get replaced on the Octy until 60k.

Hope this makes sense as currently in bed with Ebolamanflu.

60k on discs sounds about right.

Centre told me at 58,000 mile service pads needed changing at only 50% used!! Also told me front nearside shock absorber was leaking. Took to usual guy for MOT and he said all was fine, nothing needed replacing.

Sorry should have been clearer total was for a major service, brake fluid change and front and rear discs and pads.

I was still on the original discs and pads all round on my old vRS when I sold it at at 60,000 miles.  I had to get the fronts changed on the current car at about 49,000 due to corrosion on the inside of both discs that had been picked up as an advisory on the MoT in May.

I bought OE front discs and pads from Trade Parts Specialists in Northampton for £118.75 including VAT and had them fitted by a local indy for £40.

So, thick end of £300 for the service and fluid change?

Leaving £360 for the brakes. £180+ for each end seems a bit high, but not quite taking the p.

Time to find a decent indy?

The last time I had rear brakes done four years ago it was roughly 1/2 that.

Most manufacturers have a range of suppliers for things like brakes to secure continuity of supply.

Direct from a new VW Scirroco, the pads and discs that came with the 312mm upgrade were branded Padgid.

I have put 45,000+ miles on them (+the 106 miles before I got them) and the pads are under half worn, the discs show no ridging or scoring. 60,000 will be easily achieved, maybe more, the discs are looking like they will do another set of pads no problem. 120,000 miles from a set of discs? Beyond many peoples expectations?

As Mike mentioned, pressure washing behind the wheels is definitely not a good idea. The shocks can be damaged too.

If you do want it clean, do as the detailers do and remove the wheels and do it manually. (or better, get them to do it).

Every now and again, when the car is parked somewhere flat and level, I try pushing it with the brakes off. It should roll very easily, if not, a bit of checking is in order.

Especially these days when a set of decent pads can be almost as much as a replacement caliper.

Not to mention the price of fuel.

Do we need a sticky for the permanent brake advisory to help stop people getting conned? VAG dealers always told me my brakes needed doing every single time I had a service (I don't do MOTs at dealers). My Passat had the advisory every year for 4 years.

Yes agree with above people get scared when brakes are mentioned. Was in local dealer a couple of weeks ago, guy talking to a woman said car passed m o t but was going through 3 pages of maybes with her robbing bs.

and who makes the brakes for VW?

It was an Indy..

You missed the "decent" bit out.

There are "n" number of the other sort.

Anyone know if there is a Skoda menu price for brakes?
