Best to buy extras afterwards or with new car?

Featured Replies

As the title says, is it generally best to buy extras with my car order, or separate? I'm talking about things like mudflaps, boot netting, boot floor etc, things that should be easy for me to fit myself. The mudflaps and netting seem to be much, much cheaper from places like Super Skoda than when specced with the car, so am I missing something?

I tend to buy some things afterwards. On my Fabia I bought the underseat storage bins , sunglasses holder , mudflaps and floor mats elsewhere, saved me a fortune

Depends whether we are just talking accessories or factory fit options.

Id suggest trying to negotiate at least some of the accessories into the car purchase, I got nearly 100 quids worth of boot mat out of mine, though Skoda pricing is quite competitve as it is so most dealers wont be prepared to give up much margin, particularly if youre buying the car on low/no interest finance.

Factory fit stuff....this is a mixed bag. Most things will either be v v expensive to retrofit or impossible (at this time at least) as the MQB electronics architecture is v complex and as yet not that well understood in the retrofitting industry.

Some things like traffic sign recognition and high beam assist can be coded using VCP/VCDS if you have the right hardware modules but as yet to retrofit nav into a non nav enabled car as I understand it has yet to be achieved without some compromises.

Also the variable boot floor cant be easily retofitted either so if youre ordering an estate and want this make sure you tick the box.

So...try and get something accessory wise thrown in, anything you cant get thrown in that you want source from the net. Any optional extras just order them with the car, is probably easiest.

Factory fit has gotta be the spare wheel, the best £75 you can ever spend because if you buy it you'll never need it but if you don't...................

My ghost order had the spare wheel listed...just made it the perfect deal.

If you order them with the car they're covered by the 3 year warranty rather than just 1 year (providing the dealer fits them)

As mentioned, haggle to get what you can thrown in. Mudflaps, netting etc are easy self fit so don't worry about those so much, just the stuff that's expensive to retrofit.

Spare wheel is a must have IMO as themanwithnoaim says, and is cheaper to spec as an option than to source after.

Hmm, personal choice on what you fit I guess but no, you're not missing anything, overseas suppliers can often be cheaper but be certain of shipping charges before you commit.

I had my boot lip protector supplied and fitted by Skoda before I took delivery, they gave me a deal otherwise it would have been quite costly and probably a lot cheaper to buy and do myself.

After that, I picked up mudflaps, rear sill trims (typically you only get front ones) and some seat adjuster lever trims.

Last thing to be popped on was some eyebrows from Superskoda, bit more effort involved as you need to prime, paint and clear coat yourself but fitting was a doddle.
