PDA based Sat Nav

Featured Replies

Hi Jat,

I am also interested in a GPS based PDA and I have been looking on the following website http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/index.php.

They seem very comprehensive and the model I am interested in is the Mitac Mio 168 with Tom Tom Navigator software version 5 (including Europe) http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?flt=application&category_id=73&vt=list&hp=In-Car%2Ccategory_id%3D2%7CPDA+GPS+Bundles%2Ccategory_id%3D73&product_id=3677.

After speaking to them on the phone they recommend the Tom Tom software more than the others, as it is more comprehensive and the backup and support from TomTom is better.

They also have 55 reviews which all seem positive for the PDA and software.

I must say though I am not a techno person so I do not know whether the Mio 168 will be sufficient for your purpose.

Jat,

one final piece of advice. Spend some time looking at these forums http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums This will give you a good idea of the pros and cons of various systems. Also worth looking at their forum on suppliers - some have much better after care than others if things do go wrong. You will see that you will need the suppliers help if things go wrong with Tom Tom cos their support is useless. This is alos the place to pick up free camera database (updated frequently) and get free software for downloading those updates (can set it automatically check everytime you dock the PDA).

Finally the camera warnings on Tom Tom are useless - all bells and gongs. The best ones I have come across are here http://www.rayflanagan.co.uk/voicesound.html and they are free.

I ordered the mio 168 from them yesterday and had it delivered this morning. I've installed tomtom 5 and the speed camera database and gone for a spin this afternoon and can recommend it.

The Mio system is a Medion system badged differently IIRC. Software is personal preference, I've tried tomtom and medion navigator and they were both 50/50 in my view. Didn't do the speed camera trick though.
