Hill Hold

Featured Replies

I know you can spec HHC as an option but is it already installed on the car and can be activated by VCDS if it isn't a spec'd option? Or is it something totally different that can or cant be retrofitted?

Is there anything else that can be activated (lane assist etc)

My dad has a 2013 L&K Superb Estate DSG. I'm think as its the top spec it might already have some features installed but not activated and HHC would be a useful addition.

Many thanks in advance

HH needs different calipers to work, because it works by holding hydraulic pressure in the wheel cylinders until you try to move off.

Thanks Ken,

As I suspected then its a totally different system that cannot be retrofitted? Worth asking just in case as sometimes you find these hidden gems.

Simeon just did mine with VCDS at the weekend

What a difference, well happy!

It all depends on what ABS you have whether it can be activated

Also enabled XDS as well, although I havent tried that out yet

Oh, big speedo readout and easy entry/exit (seat moves back/forward when getting in and out)

Hi Damo

What is the action required on VCDS to get these options, especially XDS?.

Thanks

Why would the calipers be different? As far as I know, when I looked into getting it done, you just need the correct ABS/ESP module that has the feature.

No. As said, just the correct ABS pump.

Enabled both HHC and XDS on my 6-spd manual Superb, works great!

What's the going rate for a VCDS cable these days?  I now want XDS and HHC on mine.  No, I  n e e d  XDS and HHC.

It's not sure if you can enable it, not untill you check your ABS pump version.

A good source for official VCDS cables in the UK is gendan.co.uk, please to deal with. Mine came from here.

Don't waste your money on cheap Chinese knock-offs, they *might* work, but VCDS updates never do, and I wouldn't connect them to my own car tbh.

If the price is too steep, consider finding a local member and maybe they'll help you out for beer tokens...

Octmark,

Sounds like your Dad has same model as mine and that has (should have) HHC as standard. How are you testing - its not like normal auto in so much as you do need to apply breaks when on hill for the HHC to operate - it will only hold for a few seconds before releasing brakes  - auto box will roll back on hills.

Sorry if you already knew this but it took me a bit of time to figure it out as my previous car (auto again) held on hills using the gear box not the breaks.

What is XDS - not sure what it will do for me.

What is XDS

The XDS electronic differential lock is an extension of the familiar EDL function. However, XDS responds not to loss of traction but to the unloading of the front wheel on the inside of the corner when cornering fast. XDS applies pressure from the ESP hydraulics to the inside wheel to prevent it from spinning. This improves traction and reduces the tendency to understeer. The level of pressure applied ranges from approximately 5 to 15 bar. The impression when driving is similar to that of a limited-slip differential in toned-down form. The precise, one-sided build-up of brake pressure makes cornering even sportier, quicker and more accurate.

It's an enhanced function of ESP. When cornering it detects when the inside wheel is spinning faster, and it will brake that wheel to compensate. Prevents running wide. Most often seen in the high-performance range of cars (think hot hatches, like the GTI etc.)

Is xDS a function of all the superbs or does the car need a modified part to allow fluid brake distribution. Is it a simple case of switching it on via VagCom?

Its a case of enabling it via VCDS, if your ABS module supports it

Various ABS modules used in Skoda cars and which ones are compatible with HHC and XDS.....

If I'm reading the above list right, does it mean that when I have HHC, XDS should be possible to activate?

It seems that they do go hand in hand looking at the list.

Thanks Too Tall, sounds like it may be useful - where do I find my ABS module number ?

China-cables are fine. I´m currently on my third cable. Only bought new, to get newer version. Sold the old ones for the price of the new cable (which is around £10 including shipping).

For private use it´s a waste of money to buy the original cable, in my opinion. I use it once or twice a year, to the price of the "copy" suits me better.

I bought the original cable, and a little laptop for about 450 EUR total. I placed ads on the local VAG forums, and some second-hand websites / services websites. I ask 10 EUR per car. Everybody gives me at least that, sometimes 25 EUR, sometimes 50 EUR. All Audi's here in Belgium with the MMI basic or high nav system come with build-in BT. If you don't pay for BT, they just don't enable it. 5 minutes work with VAG-COM and voila, done. Same thing with VW's that have the "Lighting Pack" but not the "Vision Pack". This means the rain/lightsensor has only the "Light"-function active (so no auto wipers, rain closing, etc.) Another 5 minutes with VAG-COM and you have it.

After 8 months I broke even. Now I'm already about 500 in the black.  Occasionally I get someone with a mechanical problem they want to diagnose, I tell them I don't want their money because they will need every penny they have to fix the issues :D ....everybody pays....

Biggest reason not to go for a China cable is the lack of support from Rosstech if you run into trouble, the lack of updates so you're forced to get another one, and the lack of getting into the Security-protected modules. On the Superb Combi you can enable closing/opening of the boot using the keyfob/interior button, but only with an original cable...

Also, the newer MQB platform cars (Golf VII) are very new, even Rosstech themselves have only just started supporting the modules. Good luck finding something with a China version that's even further behind...

Anyway, to each his own. From all the tools, software, gadgets, games, etc I have bought, I'd not hesitate to get another Rosstech cable. Well worth it in my view!

Thanks Too Tall, sounds like it may be useful - where do I find my ABS module number ?

Either get it scanned with Vagcom, it will be module 03, and compare your number with the list above.

If you don't have access to Vagcom, you could try to find the sticker/label on the ABS pump itself, but that one is difficult to find...on LHD cars it's located under the left wing, don't know the exact location in RHD cars.

Vagcom would be a quicker way (and if possible you can get it enabled straight away!)

Well, then you are using the cable "semi-proffessional" opposite to me. I use my cable privately, and have coded maybe 5 cars for others in the time, where I have had a cable. I have never asked more than a "thanks", and if people wanted to give me something, it has been a bottle of red wine. Maybe I have been lucky, but I have never had any troubles or restrictions with my "copy cables", besides from the non existant support and ability to upgrade. But, as mentioned before, the upgrade is done by buying a newer version cable, and sell the old cable for the price of the new one.

I can clearly understand the benefit from Audi owners, they are getting a cheap upgrade. But I would never ask anyone that amount of money for coding. People here in DK who offer their help/cable normally ask 50-100 DKR (7-14€) no matter what it is.

I ask 10 EUR or 75 DKR, and 8/10 people say I should charge more. Lots of people seem embarassed after I'm done (all the VCDS tweaks, map update, etc, all for 10 EUR), and some end up giving me 25 or 50 EUR.

My ads all say "I ask a one time fee of 10 EUR per car, if you come for 1 adaptation or 100 the price stays the same, if afterwards you want to come over to change something back to the way it was it's free, if you want me to go with you to go look at a second hand car it's free" (do that quite a lot too actually). And they even get a free coffee! :p

I only ask the money because if you do it for free, I'd have 10 people over every evening. Doing an autoscan, checking all modules, doing all the tweaks, trying out all the changes, and re-doing an autoscan takes me on average 1.5-2 hours.

I think I have about 2 to 5 emails a day, and I need about 10 emails before someone actually shows up. I do about 3 cars a week. Believe me, it's the worst paying job I've ever had! :D

Very impressed with your knowledge of these matters! How difficult is it to set up the interface and do what you have done? Dealers charge about £200 to "switch on" a feature.

It is obvious to a novice where the pump information is? I do have hill hold so I am assuming that switching on xDS should be available.

Thanks in advance
