Burning Oil

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recentely found out that my felicia is using a lot more oil than it should and there are no leaks so I checked the exhaust and noticed oil on the tip. I am just getting into maintaining my car and would like to know if anybody knows how to stop it burning oil. Any advice would be great. also is this a common problem on felicias?

thanks in advance

How much oil are you putting in, relative to mileage travelled?

Spec is 1 litre oil per 600 miles.

Dude, he asked for advice, why din't you give it to him?? You're the techi here!

What are you on about?

1st step in diagnosing a problem is to confirm a fault. He says he is using alot of oil, well how much is alot? Might have used a litre in the last six months for all I know and its actually within limits.

That looks like advice to me... something to measure against.

I did an oil & filter change around the middle of august and havent checked it up till last week to notice that there was no oil what so ever. I know its a big mistake that I havent been checking oil levels but the damage has been done now and i will know for future reference. I probably do around 500 miles a month on average. In terms of how much oil I use. I filled the engine up with roughly 4 litres of oil when I did the oil change, which was gone in just over a month

Does sound like its going somewhere then doesnt it.

Is the coolant tank nice and clean? Or is there signs of oil in the water?

Does it smoke?

No, it doesn't smoke and as far as I know the coolant tank is clean but I could always try giving it a clean and see if it improves. any other advice will be great. thanks

Doesn't the car burn oil when the piston moves below the lowest point in the cylinder, hence picking up oil from the sump? And hence being a a piston problem?

You could get a garage to do a compression test (or you could buy a tool, and do it yourself).

If it's worn rings, then you probably need a bottom end rebuild. If you do some of the work yourself, this shouldn't cost more than approx.

felicia does use a little bit of oil, like a quart every 1000 kms or something like that the manual sais, but if its more than that, maybe you put in a very thing oil that is getting evaporated, try a diferent oil like 15W40 or even 20W50, if you see that the car is not using as much then it was evaporating the oil, also what is the temp, if the car is runing too hot might be the reason or a seal you might have bumped the car below and made the oil deposit looose the seal

4L is overfilling it a tad. a Felly sump is only 3.5LI don't know if this will have had any effect.

As said i would try cleaning breathers first before getting to involved in major engine work, a blocked breather will build up crankcase pressure and force the oil vapour either past the rings or past worn valve stem seals. always go for the simple options first;) or just live with it and top up with really cheap oil more often:thumbup:
