How low do you let your fuel go

Featured Replies

It's rare that my car ever has more than half a tank in it. I'd brim it if I had the money, but I'm pretty skint at the moment, so it makes sense to try and spread it out a little.

I like to live on the edge, fuel light Bingo every time

  • Me: minimum quarter tank The wife: fumes! I try to explain, but to no avail. I have been trying to explain thermostatic heating controls for 25yrs. Again, no joy! C'est la vie

  • The fuel pump picks up from the bottom of the tank - it has to, or you wouldn't be able to use it all - so anything at the bottom of the tank would go through first anyway.

In theory running half a tank would get you better mpg having less weight too!

Petrol

I just run it to till the light pings on (40 miles remaining on the computer) then brim it without venting.

Only really fill with Esso fuel. Occasionally super unleaded for the extra additives.

I avoid supermarket fuel like the plague. My cars never had any of that in it.. Ever.

My old Fabia MPI was noticeably slower with a full tank! Probably makes less difference in the Octy, every little helps though ;)

The car normally says I have 65/70 miles left in the tank when the fuel light comes on, so gives me plenty of time to plan. Or sometimes I will fill up if I am doing a longer journey.

I do a lot of miles and the ibiza has a small tank (400 ish miles range), so I normally run it to the red or fairly close. If I filled up at half a tank of never get any work done.

I use a genie card to buy my fuel, so it's a choice of tesco or morrisons, which generally means esso at tesco express.

I have two cars on the family fleet and try and keep one full or close to. Although I had no problem getting fuel during the last fuel shortages I feel happier knowing I have 600 miles range in the tank if push comes to shove :sun:

i run it until the last 5-10 miles if possible only fill up before then if going on a long run.

swmbo is paranoid & starts hassling me that her car needs filling up as it is getting near the 1/4 full mark

Mines the same - she gets worried when there's 100 miles left even though that could last her a week and a half.

I fill up when it's empty, or if I'm doing a long drive that I know I can't complete on what's left.

In the O3 that's usually about 43 litres at a time as the gauge is very cautious. In my Bravo I'd get 53 litres in, and that was a 55 litre tank.

ive let my range hit 0mls twice. Once by accident, headed to work one night find my planned fuel stop closed early.. 2nd time i was taking advantage of local tesco 10c off /litre voucher. Both times it only took 51litres to brim the octy diesel...

1/4 tank or 100 miles ish left.

Usually find I've got about 10l left whenever I do it.

I always imagine loads of crud at the bottom of the tank. No idea if that's even true or if it would bother the filters.

Generally between 1/2 and 1/4. Normally just fill up before my last rest day so there's enough fuel for my trips to work.

I always top up once a week with £30, So depending on usage for the week / Weekend its normally always around quarter of a tank.

But if a long journey is planned I will treat her to a full tank, Always brand Diesel like Esso or Shell, Not tried V-Power so cant comment.

Anyone run V-Power in a PD ?  Any thoughts ? :notme:

I put in £20 a week that seems to get me round enough. Don't see the point in lugging extra weight around costing me money in weight, if i was going long distance it would be a full tank.

and i let it go down to 100 miles range left.

I quite often end up playing filling station roulette!

Left work one day last week, with 35 miles on the MFD for a 45 miles journey. Simples. Didn't bank on being held up twice on the M1 - finished the last 15 miles of the journey on zero range. Filled up at the last station to home and put in just over 58 litres in the Superb - it has a 60 litre tank.  :peek:

Ahh you had half a gallon on there you would have got about another 20 miles at least !

:D

I used to play fuel roulette in the landrover but always had a can in the back !

If 30 litres of fuel is a weight penalty to lug around locally, then as well to leave the 20 KG spare wheel at home as well.

Play the lottery, and if you do get a puncture, it is just a taxi fare home to get the spare & come back with it.

Just think over the years that you never required the spare how much 20 KG less carried would have saved you.

..........................

Autumn Budget Statement tomorrow, and it looks like no need to sit in a queue at the Filling station to brim the tank before the price goes up.

People will be scared to buy fuel now in case the price actually drops to where it should be.

Others will just fill their tanks and drive, because that is why they have vehicles.

I have a free bus pass

Nothing like taking a Spare Wheel on a bus.  Nice one though.

Boom!!.... don't have a spare to cart around :p Just a can of squirty stuff!

I would invest in a steel with some sort of part worn on it ! herd to many horror stories !

Wise words, But due to the extra 2 seats in the boot, There is no wheel well to store it, Hence the squirty can ( Prob out of date ) :notme:

Been there, done that, had a blowout, wrote a thread about it!

Never done that, but I've got on the bus with a car battery before. The driver looked like he was going to chuck me off until I said "It's alright, I won't start anything".

Sorry no likeys available.  but that is a 5 star.
