Feed charging cable to phone box

Featured Replies

I'm trying to get a charging cable to the phone box in my RS.

I now how to connect a charger in the fuse box and I can get the cable to the bottom of the phone box but not into the box. There seem to be 3 holes under the plastic in the box but they feed into a hollow space of the box (this makes me think there's something in there)

Can I just drill a hole in it? If not, how do I remove the box.

In my Octavia 2 this was no problem, but doesn't seem that easy in the new one  :|

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're not alone wanting to find a solution to this. I've yet to find a perfect solution to this as I don't really want to use a drill on my car. I've toyed with getting a reasonable looking QI charger plus some of that anti slip matting and placing it all on top of the box which seems the best solution but I'd love to find a way to get a QI charger for my phone into the box.

I don't mind drilling a hole in the box, as long as I'm sure I'm not breaking anything

Why cant you just plug your phone into the USB socket above? Thats what I do; or am I missing something?

If you drill a phone in the phone box you're likely to destroy it as there's an antenna built into it....

It's not a charger for my phone but for my Coyote (radar detector), I want a clean solution (like I had in my previous Octavia)

No drilling then  :nerd:

Hard to believe that the "simply clever" department at Skoda didn't put a connection in there, as isn't the idea that you place phone in there, then close the lid so the phone is out of sight. (I don't have one). Maybe suggest it to them for future models

Not so simpley clever.

There's a little light in the box, so there is power already, why not put a 12V socket in there?

Since nobody knew how to do this, I started on it myself.

I opened the fuse box and with a measuring device I searched a fuse, the one next to the bottom blue fuse (just above the cube with 645 on it) has switched power on it (off when contact is off, on when contact is on)

pushing through to the left, you can open the left side of the dashboard, there's room to put the charger there.

The the plate under the middle tunnel needs to be removed. It's held in place with 1 torx screw (next to the accelerator)

Just slide it down to remove it:

Next up: remove the decorative plate around the gear-lever. First remove the plastic mat in the phone box (just pull it a bit, it's not really tight)

When the mat is out, pull the plat under the little edge where the mat was.

Lead the cable through the hole and under the steering wheel to the fuse box.

There is a little hole where the cable can fit in so you don't need to drill and everything still fits nicely

You can see the clip on the bottom of this photo, there's enough room to fit the cable there, make sure is't long enough because it will fit very snug and you won't be able to pull it further trough when everything is clicked back into place.

Put the cable on its place so it will fit into the little hole:

And then you're done.

Can I like your post a few more times? I'd not managed to get the rubber mat out of the box yet and didn't want to break it trying. I will have to tinker a bit harder tomorrow. I think I shall pick up a QI charger and see if I can get it working underneath with that guide and failing that install one in the box with a neatly routed cable. It would be nice to have wireless charging in the car. I'll have to do it at the same time I add the dash cams.

It's really easy (once you know how to  :p )

The mat comes out easy, just pry it loose where you can.

Does the mat come out without first having to slide away the trim around the buttons?

  • Author

Yes, it's wedged a bit underneath the trim, you can remove it easily.
