Rapid depreciation?

Spotted this at my local dealer:

So cheap for a less than 1 year old sport with low mileage. Why?

Is it because the Rapid isn,t worth jack?

Very worrying in my view come change time :(

Other 1 year old SE,s at only £8995.Shocking.

Earlier this week there were zero miles Sport / Toledo SE on autotrader at about 11500, so an £1100 drop over 8500miles seems very good to me.

It really depends what you paid in the first place - regardless of the RRP anyone who payed over 13000 for a 1.2 Rapedo got fleeced a little, or maybe a lot?

I'm detecting that you're going off it, the opposite of Chris who seems to be warming to his now.

Really like the pun BTW :)

YEP, nice play on words ;<)

BTW Only an issue if you change it regularly.

Full intention is to try and "beat the system" with:

  • Not paying a lot in first place. Sub £10k for year old 1.4TSI DSG SE
  • Future proof with as advanced as is reasonable built in technology. Rapid mostly ticked the box.
  • And finally keep it for 10 years (target) Hopefully can hold out this long i.e. live and not be tempted ;<)

I'm in your gang Bidey, even though I paid a little extra for a brand new one, It's aiming to last 10 years (my only previous brand new car did) so depreciation isn't really a factor for me.

Same here - having taken a hiding on my last car (had to replace it with 2 years of finance remaining & negative equity), the Rapid has to be a longer term play for me to offset the high overall cost of purchase. It has to last at least the next 5 years (length of the finance agreement), but ideally I'm looking to keep it for 7-10 years.

Think depreciation depends very much on spec, colour, the demand for your type of car in a given area and the dealers desire to have it as stock or not as the case may be.

Found with the previous Yeti I could get over 1.5k more for it P/X with the northern Skoda dealers than with those further south, as obviously 4x4's are more desirable where weather conditions can get more extreme.

Likewise when looking at used Spacebacks, noticed those with the glass roof appeared to hold their value pretty well and with additional Nav even better. Mind I turned down a used Elegance TDI with both these options for our green machine, albeit the dealer was offering this new SE TSI with full sport pack and metallic paint for little more than the used Elegance.

and you'll never confuse yours with another in the car park.

I paid around 15k for mine at the time my garage told me it was limited edition, sport, not many going to be made etc. Brand new pre-registered. First new car I've ever owned. I was going to buy a 3 years old Octy but it worked out I wouldn't have been paying much less for that as the deal I have on my Rapid is interest free. Have I been done? I've only had it 6 months, I want to be able to trade it in when warranty is up for something like an Octy VRS, but not going to be able to if it's worth peanuts!!!

when the warranty is done it'll be what 3 years?

Auto express tested an optioned up Rapid SE and reckoned it would retain 40.6% after 3 years which is pretty good I think.  The Toledo was slightly worse at 40.0%

What Car (Below) gives the Rapid Sport 40.8% - based on retail price so with the discount you got your residual percentage will be more.

Buy new 20% vat added  :p

Just to put in in some context, some Vauxhalls, Protons, Jags are down in the 20% in some case, and the absolute best are mostly Audi and Porsche at about 55% value retained after 3 years

so negotiate a bigger discount than 20%, you did didn't you?

I paid full rrp for mine too with £2K discount from SUK. I wanted the Connect but was told the Sport would work out cheaper.

I was going to order the Connect but there didn't seem to be much negotiating to be done on the 12990 RRP, and the production and delivery schedule was, at the time, guesswork.

The Sport RRP was more like 15600 AFAIK so I never considered it - but I think that was before the SUK discount was available.

You getting it down into the 13's is certainly comparable with the Connect and would give your 3 year residuals at 46% (probably more with Metallic and Nav).

I reckon you did fine, and the depreciation is no way as savage as it looked from your original post

True but on first looks £10.5K on a 6 month old came as a shock.

I kind of paid full whack for the sport but did get 3k trade in for a knackered fabia that was only worth a couple of hundred. Mildly worried about depreciation as this is my first new car but I'll worry more about that at about the ntime the PCP deal runs out. The added bonus is that its all 0%

Our rapid Sport will cost us 8k to purchase.

I deducted the value of our old golf sale plus the cost of known servicing, warranty, MOT's and additional road tax over the next three years that the Golf would have cost. (All included with the new Skoda)

the Golf had problems too. I was planning to keep it for another three years, and had then planned to spend around 8k on a newer car.

What we have done is bring forward the new car for a bit of piece of mind for the next three years.

Does that make any sense ... Lol

The early Rapids got pretty bad reviews critiquing the low spec, interiors, hard suspension etc. Skoda tweaked them (a bit) then started pushing the discounts on new ones. I would guess the two things combined didn't do the one's already on the road any favours in terms of depreciation.

On the 0% PCP deal you're probably fine. You have to settle it one way or the other at the end.

If it's worth more than the guaranteed future value, great, part-ex it or buy it out.

If it's worth less, give it back and walk away, it's their problem.

Cash (or a bank loan) would be a different story as you can't just walk away.

If they promised you'd have lots of equity at the end though, that would be a bit naughty. Hopefully there will be something in a sport assuming it's in good condition, but I wouldn't guess it would be huge.

I got an 1.2 TSI elegance at £13979 on the 0% deal (with a few options), after 42 months I've got a GFV of £5631.30, which is just over 40%. I suspect a 36 month deal would be 42 or 43%?

There are a few other factors which make a difference, the interest free element (against a bank loan) does save a lot of money. The servicing offer is another £500 you don't have to pay for over the term.

I think just looking at the total amount paid over the three years is the only way to see if it was worth it. Tax, insurance, fuel efficiency, and the unknown costs of keeping a used one going? There is value in a warranty too.

I was in a similar situation. I had an old golf mk 5 1.6 se auto, it was costing the earth to run (fuel, tax and ever frequent repairs) so can to the decision that we'd buy a new car. The rapid wasn't my first choice looking at used BMW530d, MAZDA 5 and other cars, however these were all older and higher millage. I didn't want to spend more that £7000 but felt that a year old rapid 1.2 elegance with warranty and good running costs priced at £9500 was GREAT value.

Yes, I get that, its horrible to see your car drop in its market value but ALL cars will depreciate - imagine owning an Audi Q7... The highest drop being in the first few years! Thats why a 0% PCP is GREAT if you swap your car every few years (hand it back at the end if it isn't worth as much as the guaranteed value), personally I love our rapid and fully intend to have it for 9 years, by which time it'll be worth very little.

I'm looking at the cost of my Rapid as written off from day 1. If I ever sell it then anything I get back is a bonus.

My Punto was exactly like that.

£7k Brand new, ran it 10 years till the pre MOT repair cost got stupid, parked it on the weighbridge at the local scrappers - £108 - thanks a lot + a car tax refund as well.

Agree with that... my Q7 cost over 47k new and when I sold it 34 months later I got just over 29k... and it was immaculate/as new with just 3500 miles on the clock!

I'm sure that hurt the wallet - on the plus side they are stunning car to drive. I couldn't afford to run one let alone put 47k in to one...

My work colleagues A7 is 3 years old now and only worth £28 K :(

Theres a Rapid Sport in white on Ebay now 14 Plate £10.5k, if they paid full RRP of £15,630.00 that's almost 5 grand depreciation in 9 months!
