Intermittent Starting issues. vRS

Featured Replies

Hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

I am experiencing an intermittent issue with starting my Svetlana. Sometimes she fires first time, others she will keep turning over with no luck.

This doesn't seem to be dependent on how warm the engine is, as it has happened before after stalling her in traffic. Also the weather plays little part, she will struggle on a warmer morning and go quite happily when covered with Ice.

The only element of consistency seems to be that it is more likely if some of the car's electrical systems are running (lights, stereo, air con, interior light etc.) But then why would this adversely effect a compression ignition engine? The Battery also seems to be ok (12.5V when static, 14.5V when running, with over 2A of current consistently coming out.)

Could this be a fuel feed issue? I am open to any advice.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction here.

does it smoke excessively on start up? sounds like a fuelling issue to me

Had the exact same issue recently. It would go for weeks fine then sometimes wouldn't start for at least a few cranks then when it did start it would stall until it eventually ran fine. Once it wouldn't start once it would continue not to start straightaway for a few days then it'd be ok again for a couple of weeks. I replaced the cam sensor and all has been fine since.

No, a bit of a puff on acceleration but nothing excessive.

Excellent, will look into that. If anyone knows any diagrams/part numbers to cut down my digging time I would be grateful.

The cam sensor is easy to change, about 20 minute job. Remove the top intercooler hose, remove top timing belt cover, you'll see the cam sensor behind the belt it's held on with a 10mm bolt, remove the grommet in the back of the timing belt cover and unplug the wire and feed it through. Refit in reverse.
