Polo GTI some details

Featured Replies

Becoming the norm I reckon - Lookers is the same down here re fuel.

I pushed them on this last time and the usual script about 'margins' comes back. Not sure if that's exactly true, or if it's more to do with 'revenue maximisation'.

Hi all   Gave the Polo a quick single wash yesterday - don't want to do too much work as I have the car being detailed next week and want to leave the paintwork as untreated as possible until then.

Mate, when your previous car was a 60bhp Citigo, believe me the Polo GTI is "blistering"

Aye, 'margins' - I got that spiel - your heart bleeds for them - toiling away selling cars and making a pittance on them - just to keep the motoring public happy.

The Phoenix Car Company diid something good last year for Sales staff by increasing their wage by 50% and cutting their contracted hours to be able 'To keep their best sales staff',

Or so i read In Scottish Herald, Daily Record etc..

I liked the sound of it anyway.

LOL.  You don't get to have great wealth by even giving away free air.

I hope you instructed that there be no sticker on the rear window.

You could send them an Email and tell them to be sure to have no Sticker and you want Super Unleaded in if not got 20 litres in now.

Sorted! Must be quiet in AC VW this evening - received an almost instant response saying it wasn't a problem.

'Maybe' they have time to pass, read forums, No.1 for AC employees 'BRISKODA'.

I see it has 'hill hold' - why would you need that in a manual and how does it work?

When you take your foot off the brake but the clutch is depressed....when in 1st or reverse (depending on inclination) the car will hold the brakes for about 3 seconds.

I can understand it on an auto due to the brief period between taking your foot off the brake and touching the accelerator (my MKII Fabia was my first 'auto' and it took me a good while before I trusted the hill hold), but you can use clutch control on a manual.

Just another attempt at a helpful 'feature' I guess. My manual Yeti had it - I turned it off, via VCDS as it annoyed me and always seemed to hold at the wrong moment!

So if you don't want it enabled, that can be sorted with VCDS.

Just under 48hrs to go.

Enjoy your handover afternoon /evening tomorrow, Have an enjoyable "get to know you run-in drive out ".

Don't forget a your £25 for 97 plus octane fuel, or you won't get very far off the back of the dealership goodwill. lol

Brian,I'm sure it will more than satisfy you expectations over time.

Have a great "kid in a toy shop day" !!

On the subject of fuel I'm thinking of just sticking 97 in it (I know VW recommend 98 min for GTIs...) - I've used Shell for past twelve years but BP is much more convenient for me (the Shell station is only a couple of miles away but it's in a direction I rarely head and I need to plough through several sets of traffic lights to get there - Tesco is even less convenient). I can't see one RON making much of a difference...(not looking to spark a 'standard' v 'super' debate - that's been done to death on various sub-forums).

Did you put 97 in your Fabia vRS MK2 ? I used Sainsbury's 97 Octane (local to me), was  not a problem and it ran nearly as well as Tesco Momentun, in my Fabia vRS MK2, Octavia vRS MK2 and Golf Rs but my preference is filling up with Tesco Momentum 99, when I'am was out and about . Sainsbury's 97 is still my fallback for R and Boxster. Similar for my Partner's Polo GTI 1.8.

Nearly always used Shell V-Power Nitro (think I put Tesco Momentum in it once) - only put 95 in it twice - once I stuck 20 quid's worth in to get me home (BP at Abington - all the Ultimate pumps were out of use) and the other time I filled up in Towcester with Shell 95 as the V-Power wasn't available (actually got superb fuel economy out of that - made it to Glasgow with plenty still in the tank - can't say I noticed a difference from V-Power but then that was a steady motorway slog).

'Abington' not 'Abingdon' - I don't live in Oxon :-)

I turned up a bit early to check the car over in daylight (all well) before parting with my cash - initial impressions are very favourable - like the -

- build quality (satisfying thud when closing the doors)

- ride

- extremely comfortable driver's seat

- interior

- torquey engine

Good stuff Brian, just in time for the weekend run out.

Enjoy the wheels.

Oh, and no Dunlops, it's on Bridgestones  .

Enjoy Brian.  I absolutely adore mine.  I've had a couple of Mk7 Golf GTD's as company cars recently and this thing absolutely knocks them out of the park.

I love the whole big engine/small car thing, its better made and more refined than the Mk3 Octavia I PX'd for it.  The 1.8 TSI motor is an absolute gem....having had a Mk2 Fabia vRS as well, this is just in an altogether different league.  The 1.4 Twincharger was really good, but this is great.

I wouldnt outrightly say its a better car than a Mk7 Golf GTI as it wouldnt be factually correct, but its more unruly/aggressive nature (as a consequence of not being quite so polished.....the power also on the realms of overwhelming the chassis) make it more challenging and fun to drive.  It is probably also a bit quicker if the YouTuve vids and Top Gears tests are to be believed....it definitely feels low 6's to 60.

Not sure if you have the Sports pack on yours, but I find that also makes quite a difference.  Becomes even more skittish and aggressive...wearing on bad roads or when not in the mood but great fun otherwise.

As to fuel.....its 95ron minimum so it will run on that all day long no complaints.  I stick branded 97 in mine, Shell Nitro as and when I am able (not many local shell stations where I live).

Find on short runs and in stop start traffic the economy is woeful but otherwise its good for the performance.  Nothing like the advertised 47mpg but I managed to average about 37mpg on a near 600 mile run in the week which I was happy with.

'Simply Clever'  You time them, or put them in the real world and compare.

When Brian has put some miles on it hopefully we can find a 'Private Road' and see what his new car is like against what he had last.

Timing is what it is, better than the seat of the pants guessing.

(maybe on 99 ron they do better than with 95 ron in. Reviewers tend not to say, or if they set the tyre pressures.)

Why time or give a 0-60 time when 0-62 (100kmh) is the official figures, & a 5 door MINI is not lighter than a 3 door VW Polo GTI manual.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wZX4Q-s3W5o

Was the reviewer not aware that the Polo GTI 1.4 TSI also had the battery in the boot, and no spare tyre as standard.

Not because the space was needed but because VW Engineers designed the handling that way,

but they Sand Bagged the Lighter than the Polo GTI, Mk2 Fabia vRS hatch with a Spare Wheel as standard & 25kg ballast on the rear crash bar making traction even worse under acceleration. (making the VED band the same as the Estate and higher than the heavier VW.)

This allowed VW to give the Skoda & heavier Seat slower 0-62's than the VW or Audi (185ps) with the same engines / gearboxes.

Project Brian, that's a no then. Standard pretty good ,with less high oil consumption issues and a manual, so no potential DSG hiccup but experience more involvement. Enjoy the torque and slick stick.

pipsy,  0-60 low 6's is a yawn as well.

As is your constant rhetoric on Briskoda George but we cant have it all can we?

Sure you are a lovely guy in the flesh but within these forums you dont half (and somewhat unnecessarily) wind people up.

FYI....Top Gear issue 273 tested a manual GTI against a number of presumably faster peers and in 0-60 runs it posted a consistent 6.2 seconds, 0.1 secs faster than the Leon Cupra 280.  Thats proof enough for me.

All I can say is it feels pretty bloody quick to me and I have driven some pretty fast cars over the years.

Brian, enjoy it mate you'll have alot of fun with it.
