  • Quite like the c63 AMG's when they get booted!

  • BRM V16    Cosworth BDA series sounded good too.   My Laverda 1200 with Jota endurance racing cams and conti exhausts (basically open mega's)

  • And the unmistakable, legendary sound of the 1.2 3 cylinder HTP. Oh hang on...

Not sure if it's already been said but a nicely tuned Alfa Busso V6 with a good exhaust is a thing of sheer unadulterated audio/visual porn.

Also followed a E60 M5 with the v10 off a roundabout and onto a dual carriageway the other day - never seen one in the flesh before. My god when he gave it the beans it sounded like the devils fury straight from hell.... fantastic thing.

No one's mentioned the older 911's.

When they come up so fast behind you and blitzes past, just sucking your doors off, the whole car rocking.

One of the great pleasures of tootling along a German Autobahn.

Oh yes - that older aircooled 6 really screams at high revs - mates dad had a 2.2S in the early 70's - luvvly.

Anything with a diesel in it

Let me find you a 1.4 pd fabia.

That 3 pot will be like a dream come true

Ultimate noise = Metro 6R4.

Next question please.

Loved the induction/engine noise from the Focus ST 2.5T 5-cyl.

The M135i sounds bleddy awesome too tho!

Also another vote from me for the C63 :-)

Anything with a Sulzer 12LDA28C.

Oh wait, they are too big for cars. I dunno, thought cars were meant to be good

Yep. an Austin Rover V64V is the best engine noise.

Those ST's do sound good dont they. RS's too ofc.

Weird how its a Volvo engine yet I've never heard a valve sound like that. Lol.

I traditionally love the sound of a big V8, but personally, I can't find anything that beats the sound of a V10 at full chat...

To be specific, for a road car, nothing currently tops this!

it was already a fab noise when V6 dinos started making it in 1959ish.

5 cylinders sounds good, but only in a Group B Quattro.

Nah, for 10 or 12 cylinders has to be in something red and Italian.

Do you not like the sound of the focus'?

Pop and bangs from a Escort mk2 rally car

Top fuel dragster, shelby cobra, basically any old school v8. Even the old rover v8s sound ok

These are some of my favs

Alfa boxer, and of course the V6. Scooby flat 4. Of course, most engines with 6cyl sound great, all engines with 8 and above are glorious.

Rolls Royce Merlin.

12 Rolls Royce Merlins!!

Had a formation low fly by at work this summer - 2 Lancasters, 2 Spitfires, 2 Hurricanes - 144 pistons with open exhausts -

I know its not really a car engine - but it has been done with either the Merlin or Meteor 27litre V12 a few times.

God i love the RR Merlin.

If we are talking plane engines, you can't beat the sound of a Piston-Punder radial engine.

Back to cars; i have a vote for the previously mentioned Lexus LFA.

The NGTC spec British Touring Cars engines sound pretty brilliant too. better than the current F1 V6 hybrids.

Deltic?

Oh and let's add the "double-breasted yammer hammer" to the list of great-sounding diesels.

I like the howl of the 5 valve ferrari V8's 355 / 360 / 430
