High beam assist

Featured Replies

After finding out I had this on my car ( thanks to this site) I tried it out, first short trip, worked great on the way there, but nothing on the way home (same roads), or since.. Until yesterday. Reading other posts believe it may be controlled by speed, as well as light. If this is the case what speed does it kick in at? I have use mostly local roads ( dark & winding) where it would of been ideal, last night traveling back from Southampton mainly on A roads it suddenly kicked in and worked pefectly after that.

Mine seems to not work below about 40mph.

Drive it like you just stole it and you'll have no problems well, with the lights anyway.

I think you can alter the kick in speed with a VCDS

Won't kick in until 40mph by default and then cuts out at around 30mph I think. It also depends on the level of light it can see ahead. If it's too bright they won't come on. This can be adjusted with VCDS as well as the speed.

Love mine since getting it enabled. Only once have I had to manually switch it off when it wouldn't switch off for a police van infront of me going in the same direction.

Works brilliantly on mine. Easy to override at low speeds, if you want high beam below 40 mph. Manual says cut in is at 60kph (approx 40mph)

57kph on most cars I have scanned, the odd one set to 60kph.

27kph or 20kph for the speed it deactivates at automatically

I have to say I enjoy it in mine at night, Seems to work a couple of mph under 40 for me, not sure when it turns off. I changed the sensitivity in the Amundsen and it's much better than the default setting, I've not had to adjust the lights at all compared to the old setting which seemed to never detect anything. I can't wait to get around to having someone code all the bits through VCDS that I want to enable/change (this being one of the options I'd like on permanently).

Thanks for all your reply's. Shame the speed options can't be altered within the car settings, I can't see why it can't be as simple as on or off at any speed.

Ah, didn't know speed was a factor. That explains why it doesn't work sometimes.

Its good tech but not foolproof. It is a bit slow to react to cars up ahead if they dont have particularly bright tail-lamps, a bit dim-witted at picking up oncomming cars on bends, also will blind the hell out of cyclists/pedestrians if there isnt sufficient light source to detect them. Ive also noticed than when approaching T/4 way junctions it will not pick up cars going past so you'll blind the hell out of them as they go past.

I also dont much like how the system is cancelled, is not particularly intuitive from the stalk. Have found that twisting the light switch from auto to full dipped and back again is the best way to turn it off.

That all said and done, i do use it still. I wouldnt have paid for it though.

I dropped the speeds right down with VCDS and will probably drop it even more - lots of narrow twisty country roads round here

Yeah, checked your adaptation map and it was at 20kph/10kph!

That's the off speed I think - ISTR I have on set to 30 or something , 20 would be better :-)

How do you know if you have High Beam Assist?

How do you know if you have High Beam Assist?

With your dipped beams on push the left stalk way from you and let go, you should get a symbol, like the main beam but white in between your total milage and your trip.

If nothing lights up you may be able to get it activated with a VCDS. Think you also need the Lane assist camara for it to work

It also shows it in the Manual

I don't have Lane Assist.

I must say I find the Full beam symbol small and in an awkward location on dash to see (maybe the Mk2 location was so central it was much easier to see).

You can't alter the sensitivity of HBA in the infotainment, the sensitivity settings are for the auto headlights turning on.

Ive decided its pretty crap...I have an Elegance with the camera in the rear view mirror base.

I used it driving home in torrential rain on Boxing Day night and just started feeling v embarased with the number of cars it dazzled, both following and oncoming traffic. Its not that it doesnt work properly IMO rather its just not clever enough to deal with all situations and lighting levels....again mainly because its reliant on fairly visible and focused light sources.

it irritated me that much Ive now disabled it in the infotainment and have taken to manually controlling the high beam....rather a shame as its in theory a very useful piece of tech.

I coded it ontoy car yesterday with vcds. Seemed to work reasonably well on my quick drive up the local unlit bypass. Although saying that so does the guidematic system on my wife's 1965 cadillac although that also struggles sometimes when following cars

Whereas mine works just fine. I've not had any issues where it's come on too early or stayed on too late.

The only "problem" I had was that I wasn't aware that it didn't come on until you reach a certain speed which explains why it wasn't working on a slow country lane.

I'm not gonna repeat myself so, just re-read post 3 of this thread.

I have lane assist but cannot activate high beam assist to try it out. If I have dipped beam on and push left stock away it just goes onto high beam manually. Am I missing something to activate it?

Have you used VCDS to enable it, or did you pay £300 to get it as an option?  The vRS doesn't have HBA as standard.

Ah thought it was standard on VRS, that'll be why lol - Thanks!
