High beam assist

Featured Replies

57kph on most cars I have scanned, the odd one set to 60kph.

27kph or 20kph for the speed it deactivates at automatically

Are you planning on adding how to check/change these to the VCDS thread? (Just curious on what the settings look like. And preparing for when I get the Octy...)

Is high beam assist standard on all VRS's, or does it need to be enabled with VCDS.

Cheers

The hardware is there but it is not enabled from the factory. Vcds can enable it

Allready there....

Speed that HBA will activate, I have set mine to 20kph

On an Elegance with HBA activated as standard, is it possible to activate lane assist via VCDS?

Not without the lane assist camera.

Not without the lane assist camera.

OK, I thought from reading this thread that it was the same camera that works the High Beam Assist, but I guess they fit a smaller camera if HBA only is required?

Correct - Elegance gets the HBA camera, whereas the Lane Assist camera does HBA and VZE (Traffic sign recognition) as well

With your dipped beams on push the left stalk way from you and let go, you should get a symbol, like the main beam but white in between your total milage and your trip.

If nothing lights up you may be able to get it activated with a VCDS. Think you also need the Lane assist camara for it to work

It also shows it in the Manual

I have lane assist and have turned on a few bits HBA is turned on but I don’t get a symbol - I need to check what speed it’s set to! On my octavia elegance speed is not a factor!

A question regarding HBA on Octavia VRS'. If the hardware is fitted from the factory but not enabled, is there a reason for this such as it is actually faulty or to a lower standard in some cars, as compared to if someone ordered it out of the factory with the option ordered. Or is it just a money making exercise by dealers to enable it? Just thinking it odd that you can simply enable it with the right tools and wondered if this is similar to how some computer processors or CPU's can be "downbinned" i.e. Sold at a lower cost with some features/cores disabled due to manufacturing defects and other quality control standards not being met for higher tiered pricing.

I don't think the CPU binning process as applied to PC hardware is the factor/issue.  Somethings can be switched on with software as we know, and if the binning process was a thing, then it would be really hit and miss if your hardware worked (so highly unlikely)

From experience I went to retrofit Bi-Xenon headlights, and went to code the 09 - Central Electronics, and kept getting a weird "out of range" when trying to code in the change.

Did some googling, and turned out the cars that left the factory had a different hardware version/revision of the CEC, once I fitted the new part, it coded in the headlights just fine.

Now as to how they actually change internally the CEC from one spec to another, that could be up for a long debate as several choices.

Fair enough. Thanks for the insight. It does feel a bit odd that you can relatively easily enable this option when it probably would have cost quite a bit to have it factory/dealer enabled. I will have a look into it myself when I have time.

Yeah as mentioned you can pay factory to turn on a feature for XXX amount, but could do the same for free with say VCDS and coding.

Somethings also need hardware changes at the factory otherwise they cannot be coded in, as my own experience in retrofitting headlights in the past.

I think Joe Public has little idea, and pays to have it added, but with forum knowledge, we can just jump in and code (some items, just not all)

For VAG it's about extracting money from your wallet.

Ease of manufacturing :)

Rather than making 8 different hardware of each combination:

- no assists

- high beam assist (HBA) only

- lane assist (LA) only

- traffic sign recognition (TSR) only

- HBA and LA

- HBA and TSR

- LA and TSR

- HBA, LA and TSR

They can fit one of the following 3 and turn the different options on or off depending on the car spec via software.

- no front camera

- 'lowline' camera capable of HBA only

- 'highline' camera capable of HBA, LA and TSR

The vRS got LA as standard so gets the 'highline' camera which means it's relatively easy to enable the other two features.

Things are changing to make it harder. For example somewhere around 2019/20 the 'highline' camera was updated so it's no longer trivial to enable TSR. It now requires an appropriate licence/FeC/SWaP code which Skoda/VAG don't sell separately. New cars have SFD (Vehicle Diagnostic Protection) so you need a code from VAG to unlock a module before it'll accept any changes...

Many thanks everyone. I managed to get HBA activated on my car, along with a few other adaptations of interest. Had some problems because I was using OBDEleven rather than VCDS but the instructions are pretty much the same, just needed to get to grips with the app interface which has things laid out differently. But we got there in the end.
