Is this a safety measure or what?(engine & Gear separate from the Octy 3 during accident)

Featured Replies

Guys,

we had a strange accident by Octy Mk3 here in Egypt & everyone is talking about it now on the internet ,

the strange thing with the accident is that the engine & the gearbox got separated from the body of the car,

the local dealer says this is a safety measure & some people says this is also applicable to VOLVO cars  & other manufacturers ,

so any body know is this really a safety measure in VAG cars or not? as some people don't believe in this as they think the separated engine could hurt other people or cars in the street when it got separated.

kindly check the pics here

Nope ....all that has happened here is the mechanism of impact has caused it to happen. I've seen it before with many different makes and models. Just the forces at play.

Here's the pictures:-

That's a bit odd. What did they even hit?

Better the engine breaks away from the chassis than ends up squashing the occupants. It's a solid lump of metal that they don't want to enter the passenger compartment.

this is what skoda local delear in Egypt said, but as i mentioned some people don't accept this as they think it could hurt others on the street.

no one know for sure , but people say he hit a very bad bump in the road while he was at speed & then it seems he hit the sidewalk with the tyres so the car turns upside down, also the local dealer says the engine & gearbox & the steering column all got detached from the car in the accident.

I know in Subarus the engine (which is about half the height of a normal one) and gearbox are designed to submarine under the passenger compartment, aided with a kink in the propshaft so it folds out of the way. http://www.subaruofkeene.com/subaru-boxer-engine.htm

I have seen numerous VAGs with engines flung out, but I'm not sure it was supposed to.

There was a link on here to a Yeti that did this too. http://www.westerndailypress.co.uk/Engine-ripped-Skoda-crash-escape/story-21045918-detail/story.html

Sounds like the local news/social media want to create a story from nothing to me. As above it is very clear that the engine is designed to do this. As for the engine hitting someone on the street, I think the % chance of that happening compared to the chance of killing a passenger/driver if the engine stayed attached make detachment a MUCH better option!

And I bet as a pedestrian your more likely to be hit by a car having an accident than an engine coming from a car having an accident.

I think most cars are designed for the engine to shift under the firewall and floor of the car in a head on type accident. To do this I'm guessing the subframe and engine mounts have a weak point. So in this accident it has just allowed the lot to be flung out?

I've seen many accident photos where parts of the car have been ejected including the drivetrain

I think all vehicles are designed this way these days so that engine & gearbox doesn't crush the legs of the driver & passenger.

Given the relative lack of damage to the front & body work of the car, I would assume the drivetrain impacted on something like a bollard when turning over causing it break free.
