Odd "AUTO" light issue

Featured Replies

My lights often come on in bright sunlight, it seems to depend if there is direct sunlight or not on the sensor, and they also appear to be speed sensitive, staying on at higher speeds (60-70mph), then if I stop at a junction or drive much slower in an urban area they go out. I don't think it's a problem, just one of the quirks of the system.

Mine has only been doing this for about the last 6 weeks or so... not coming on when dark (coming home/leaving home) and come on in sun...

Sounds like a dirty front screen making the sensor think it's night....der der der derder! :D

Hi Stuart I am sure we bought the cars around the same time January 2014. I have the L&K and the lights work ok. On in tunnels and then off again if there is sufficient light to say " we are out of the tunnel" Sunlight definatlt turns them off. Coming home lights work as they should.. Cornering lights come when, well, cornering: not so sure yet how useful they are. All in all no problems.

Just how mine used to work :) Will see what the dealer finds on the 30th... I will mentions that washing the screen switched them off Lol

OK, I want your opinion, see if it matches mine....

As the thread mentions I have an odd issue with the auto lights on my Superb, and from the symptoms I suspect the rain/light sensor on the screen..

1. The leaving home lights on occasions fail to come on when the car is in the dark... lock/unlock again and they work.

2. Even in bright sunlight/daylight on occasions the headlamps stay on.

3. The variable wipers can be a bit "hit and miss", if I move from the control on the wiper stalk other than as far left as it goes the varible wipers almost stay on constant..

All these appear to me to indicate the sensor is giving the wrong reading.

Also, on Friday the headlamps stayed on when the sun was bright, after about 5 mins I decided to wash the screen, as soon as the wipers and fluid went across the screen the lights went out!

I know the headlamps and wipers are linked in some way as they come on when the wipers are used..

Do you agree its a faulty sensor? or should I say could be :)

It does sound to me as though something is amiss somewhere.

The issue with these kinds of faults is if the dealer doesn't see a fault code and they work OK when they test them then they'll tell you to go away and come back if it gets worse.

Should be a good test for DM Keith!

Ok mines an Octavia MKIII Vrs but the auto lights should be the same function

Unlock the car with the fob, LH lights on, don't open a door, lock car the LH lights go out.

Unlock the car with the fob, LH lights come on, open a door, close door,  lock car LH lights go out

Unlock the car with the fob, LH lights come on, open door put key in the ignition and turn dash lights on, remove key close door and lock car, LH lights stay on as they are now comming home lights

Does that make sense?

You can check the output from the RLS with VCDS. And obviously check for any faults.

LOL goes in on the 30th, like you say may be difficult to find unless, because I know them well they just change the sensor anyway ;)

Makes perfect sense... Lol

All sounds very similar to mine, leaving home lights don't always come on, lock and unlock again they then work, lights can stay on in sunshine, although they do seem speed sensitive. The rain sensor seems pretty good on mine. Can't say it bothers me too much but it will be interesting to see if the dealer finds any fault.

It is not that it bothers me, it is just the fact that it is not right :) and I like things right, especially when they did work, or should I say appeared to work for 5 months..

Will let you know how I get on ;)

OK, been in to the dealer today....

After 4 days of no issues, even on the way to the dealer this morning, the headlamps stayed on in the workshop (as you would expect being dark) he held a high powered lamp on the sensor and they stayed on :) So, new sensor ordered by the looks of things..

Looks like they are also changing the blue tooth module/head unit (if needed) to hopefully cure my issue, just waiting for Skoda technical to call them back... If anything I would say the module will be at fault.

Happy it did play up....

That's good that you are getting it sorted - hopefully the sensor does the trick.  More often than not it is difficult to get these issues to repeat at the garage.

I had a feeling it would be a wasted trip as both issues were so random.. I had intended leaving the car and having a loan car, instead they had a quick look while I waited.. Its a 40 miles round trip so better to do it that way than come all the way home, only to have to go back when they found nothing...

Glad it did play up :)

On the subject of blue tooth modules, looking on the ETOS parts system for my VIN number two modules are listed...

3C8 035 730D

3C8 035 730E

Any idea what the difference is?

Not sure what part number is installed in the car, never looked :)

Hi Stuart,

Well driving in the poor conditions yesterday, lights came on...good.....bright sunshine appeared.....light stayed on......wiped windscreen sensor.......lights stayed on. Today diving car lights stayed on......wiped headlamps, quite dirty, lights sent off.

Thought wonderful there must be a sensor in the lamps. Put a blanket over the lamps turned engine on.....turned lights on....main beam stayed off, put my hand over the windscreen sensor, lights came on took it away lights went off. So that theory is now in the bin.

Confused......I am.

Oh dear... seems my trouble is spreading Lol

I will let you know if the new sensor work :)

I am aware that computers can spread viruses, thanks Stu. :0)
