  • Nice to see it in the flesh@GTI International last weekend.

  • That came out a few weeks ago. 2.5tfsi with a turbo swap to 500bhp and a VW racing intake.  Same as my Yeti.   Bet it's fun, I know mine is.  Good power delivery at 500bhp from the 2.5 5 pot engine

  • Every DSG car I've had, I've got bored of rather quickly. More speed. Less fun. IMO.

Are there any spy shots of R400 Testing at Nurburgring? Real Power sound would be good,in the meantime the above will do me.

Oh that does sound nice...... although a Milltek would still be on the shopping list!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Maybe it'll be the same box with uprated/aftermarket clutch packs?

They do have autos that go up too 800 IIRC.

Or it'll just be very carefully mapped.

All of the enlightened types over in scn tell me the std dq250 is good for anything. Innit. I'd have thought it would be running higher clamp pressures and more than likely a lot less slip. The DSG in the R is probably OK to 500Nm with a remapped tcu by someone who knows what they are doing, with the usual caveats that come with powertrain mods. I guess worst case is you just wear the clutch packs out faster.

Interesting in that it states it carries over the same DSG as the R. I thought that VW didn't have a DSG capable of 500Nm, which was the obstacle to this project, clearly not. At least I know that remapping my Cupra to within an inch of its life shouldn't melt my clutch packs then.

The article in Autocar states:

"To maximise the sledgehammer performance potential of its engine, the concept employs a six-speed manual gearbox and the latest version of Volkswagen’s Haldex multi-plate clutch 4Motion four-wheel drive system, a combination that has also been taken from the new Golf R."

Damn. Caught out.

I think that was "wishful reading" on my part

Manual?

TFFT.

Maybe it will be more fun than the RS3 (which will probably be DSG) after all...

I'm regretting not having a manual, not that I had a choice., but if I had I would not have another DSG again. The only negative is remapping = potential new clutch, which just makes it a whole lot more expensive than you'd want.

I have come to the same conclusion Richard, it's about as skilfull in use as buying a KFC is fine dining. The most satisfying part of it is in traffic queues is the little effort required to inch forwards, and fun blip on downchanges, but only really for people like me who heel and toe like a cripple.

One for the file marked lesson learnt. There's only one solution: more power!

That's always been my view on automatic/dsg vehicles. If it's going to be easy it needs to be scary.

Manual is always better

would not be surprised if that was not already a Milltek designed exhaust on it.  They have done a fair few special edition factory exhausts over the years for different manufacturers and they do have the link of already doing the VW racing exhausts.

i'm the other way, i think without the DSG on my Fab i would have got shot ages ago.  It's  the jekyl and hyde of DSG i love so much.  Potter around like Miss Daisy is in the back in Auto then drop it into Manual to blast it round some lanes.

If i had got the Fiesta St i test drove i bet i would have sold it by now.

Just shows how opinion varies, hence why car makers give us options.

I don't need my Fiesta ST but it has a lovely gear change, is a lot of fun to drive and incredibly capable.

It shows up a lot of other warm/hot hatches for fun and cornering, Fabia VRS included.

Hence I've not been able to sell it.

My Fabia mk2 VRS lasted 4 days. Just too easy to go fast in a straight line and easy to drive in traffic, and poor in the corners.

Choice is a good thing. :)

I already think I know my next car. Unless its really **** again :(

It's only 316 bhp. The R is 396? or something in the 390s?

Golf R 296 bhp, R400 - range 396 > 420 bhp.

Must get my reading specs checked out. Thought I read 414 bhp.

The other thing that throw me was 0-60 in 3.9sec,that is the same as R400.

Sorry ,must have been half a sleep.

I'm getting the 280 remapped next week (Mon 26th) and I have promised to write a detailed review of the whole experience of day, the company and of course the map. It's bespoke map, so there will be dyno before and after print outs. I've seen that 380 is possible with the R, however, I'm not entirely suer what (if any) differences there are between the R and the 280 engine, other than the paper spec of 276 and 296 bhp...more than one 280 owner has seen 300 on a dyno, so maybe they are in fact identical, and it's just marketing from VAG. Either way, I'm not expecting, nor wanting anything more than 350, I'm expecting around 330 ish. Through the front wheels. Should be, er, interesting. More to follow....
