DTUK box on a just purchased 1.6 TDI: Opinions?

Featured Replies

Has anyone experience of the CRD2+ box on the lower powered diesel? I have just bought a one year old Octavia 1.6 Elegance, my fifth Skoda.

Previously I have owned an Estelle (for fun), a Favorit (great budget beast, when I was very poor), a Fabia Mk1 Estate and then in 2002, a Mk1 Octavia L&K 1.9 tdi 110 which was a lovely car.

I've just come out of a 2013 Leon SC 2.0 tdi. The Leon was a good car but due to sudden changes in circumstances (retirement), elderly parent becoming unwell and a house move, I needed to move to a larger five door car. I loved the 2.0 litre engine for its shove, but disliked some of its characteristics. I find the 1.6 engine slightly more refined, more like a petrol in its nature but of course a lot slower and might have bought a 2.0 litre if I had found one in the right spec (which I couldn't). It is also very easy to get the MPG of the 1.6 over 60 on the MFI, whereas the 2.0 litre would only do this with a very light right foot.

I would just like a bit more oomph from the 1.6. Don't get me wrong, it's a great engine, just looking for a bit more tractability...

This is a personal opinion, others will disagree - I don't like tuning boxes for 2 main reasons...

1 they are obvious add-ons and could invalidate warranty if spotted by a dealer (especially if you break down and have to call out Skoda Assist), and

2 it's something else to go wrong.

I have had cars remapped in the past to great effect.  You should really declare the remap to the dealer, but if you 'forget' they are virtually undetectable.  There's not additional parts to fails either. You must, however, not forget to tell your insurers :)

The box is a good compromise (I was the first with a CRDt+ fitted) but mapping is certainly the way to go, the car is a real joy to drive with lots to be had from the 1.6tdi :)

I'm guessing you haven't had the 1.6 for too long, so maybe give it some time and you'll soon get used to it, and in the meantime enjoy the great fuel economy, then decide if you still want to tune it.

Have a read of this Yeti Greenline 1.6 upgrade, now running at 150bhp and 320Nm

I agree that I will get used to less power and torque but I don't particularly want to. I have literally only driven 50 miles or so in it and while it is adequate, it is just not as torquey as I'd like. I also rode in the passenger seat for a while and it felt ok from there too.

I don't particularly like mapping - I agree with your sentiments but would like to be able to remove the unit if I need to. f

Also, I think I am more likely to go for the CRD-T unit (codename Trevor) as the boost pressure can also be controlled... that is if I go for either of them.

I got 2.0TDI 150PS, after couple of thousand miles, put a DTUK box on it, it felt amazing, and then got bored after 2 weeks. :dull:

The Yeti's still have the older 1.6 tdi so not really comparable.

I also came from a 2.0tdi CR with a remap to the 1.6 tdi,I've done 30K with the DTUK box on now (20K using a Trevor with the latest map on) it feels much like my 2.0 did before the remap but happily pulls from lower down (about 1200rpm), not had any warning lights or wobbles since the latest map went on ~ 20K miles ago and brim to brim calve are pretty much the same.

Would happily use the box again on another car and prefer the fact it's un-traceable once removed (I say this Un-biased as I have 2 other cars that are both mapped).

Good to know.  Maybe one for me to reconsider.  I'd been steered off of these boxes in the past (had used Power Commanders etc from my biking days), but it's good to hear from people with experience of both the DTUK box and remaps.

That's very useful and what I was hoping to hear. What map are you running?

I'm on Map 2 +1 Doug but each box has different files loaded if it's ordered for a different engine.

My engine is a 1.6 CLHA engine. Same as yours? I'd be very happy to get similar shove to a standard 150 tdi which is what the dyno figures would lead you to believe...

I took the car out for a drive this afternoon to visit family. I was about 20 miles into a 28 mile cross country A road drive averaging 62 mpg-ish when the engine decided to do an active regeneration. Wasn't particularly surprised as the car has probably been subjected to test drives/sitting at dealer/moved around in the cold by dealer. However the fuel consumption increased to 45 mpg almost instantly. Not impressed. On the return journey the average was 63mpg. Same journey in the 2.0 Leon averaged around 55.

Still seriously considering this as an upgrade though as I really do prefer the smoothness of the 1.6 to the 2.0

Like for like driving against my remapped 140 CR Exeo, I'm seeing 10mpg more in the Octavia (high 50s compared to high 40s).

Unfortunately it does like to do a regen quite often (with or without the box) but I generally don't notice it as most of my driving is cruise control on the motorway. Just ignore it and the mpg will average itself out long term.

Great idea to use a tuning box - if you're up for it, do it!

People who claim there are no additional parts that may fail aren't entirely correct though. Never forget many (not all) of these boxes manipulate fuel rail pressure, which is still a sure fire way of increasing wear on your injector nozzles.

You never feel the consequences of that in the very short term. Kind of like smoking ;-) I never really appreciated the way most box manufacturers neglect to mention this "detail".

That being said, just accept this and go for it - it's a great and cheap way to enjoy your car!

Doug, the tuningbox comes with a moneyback offer, so why not try it, if you don't like it, send it back

And they have a sale on at the moment....  I know I have said I prefer a remap but at the current price and the feedback I've seen from owners I just might try one! What have I got to lose!

I really should be on commission for pointing this out every time, or maybe I should get round to buying one myself... use code bri80 and you'll get £80 off the RRP at any time you want, which is better than the sale price.

Oh bo****ks.  I just ordered one 5 minutes before seeing your post.   Oh well, at least they took the VAT off so end price was £322.78 inc delivery. I'm happy with that.
