Skoda Octavia Mk2 2.0 tdi Engine Oil Confusion - No DPF

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a 2006 Octavia 2.0tdi and I have read the manual which says the below;

VW 507 01 (for non dpf models)

VW 505 00 (for dpf models)

I bought 2 types of oil which was on offer as below (not having manual with me);

Castrol Magnetec 10w-40 Part synthetic A3/B4 .... states VW 501 01 / VW 505 00 on the back

and

Castrol Magnetec 5w-30 Fully synthetic A3 /B4 .... sates VW 502 00 / VW 505 00 on the back

So the manual says that I should put VW 507 01, however I checked which oil the garage used the last time and the used the GM dexos 2 oil which states VW 502.00/505.00/505.01 ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 this one here.

The car has run fine for the last year, so 3 questions

1.  Should I be worried the garage used the GM oil above

2.  Should I return the oil I purchased as it is the wrong one or is VW 505 better than VW 507 ?

3.  If not Manual doesn't mention part or fully synthetic ? can either be used ? which should I keep ?

P.s thinking of changing the oil myself this time

Many Thanks in Advance

You need oil which meets either 505.01 or 507.00 the latter is higher spec than the former. 507.00 is the latest spec and must be used for vehicles with a dpf, but it will be fine to use in your car.

As a minimum for a PD engine the oil must meet 505.01 not 505.00. 505.00 is for older injection pump diesel engines.

As per trundlenut either 507.00 (dpf or non dpf) or 505.01 (non dpf only) will be fine. any other vw spec oil will cause premature cam wear as the pd engine needs to run on specific high pressure oils to prevent engine damage.

Either you or the manual has this the wrong way around.

507 is for DPF's, 505 is for non-DPF.

The 507 is long life, low ash oil specifically for use with DPF's.

This is currently the highest spec VAG diesel engine oil available and for the extra few pounds it costs I would use this every time regardless of service intervals.

I find this quite useful...

As mentioned above, you need 505.01 spec oil as a minimum.

So you can not use either of the above oils in a PD engine.

Strange this is what manual says

I know.

The manual is wrong.....it goes on to say that 505.00 oil is only for use in DPF equipped engines, which is absolutely wrong. As trundlenut mentioned, 505.00 is only suitable for pre 2003 VAG diesels without PD injectors.

Skoda does not have a good track record at producing accurate paperwork. The handbook for my mkI was borderline gibberish.

A memorable example in the pre facelift mk2 manual was 'The ignition must be switched ON before the battery is disconnected'. In later editions of the manual it was corrected to say 'The ignition must be switched OFF before the battery is disconnected'!
