Helmet Choice?

Featured Replies

Resist the urge for the jokes guys, done it, ok :)

With the plan to go for a few track days I'm looking to get an open face helmet. Don't want to spend silly money, just a descent helmet that will do the job, any suggestions ?

Best way with helmets is to just go and try them on IMO.

Certain helmets seem to fit different shaped heads better.

I second that !! i wanted a Arai ! but they are for people with really small heads, which turns out thats not me ! haha i like Shoei and HJC, iv had the Shuberth SR1 but ended up returning it and getting a full refund lucky enough !

As far as open faced helmets go I'm not a fan of them, if you are prepared to put something on your head wrap it all, same on a motorbike them things will pull your chin off !

In a car i would also go for full face so in the event of a accident any shrapnel from windscreens or metal get slowed down before they impale your face ! I don't think you need the peripheral vision that the half face give so i would also think about full face ... after all a white Simpson helmet would go well with your yeti !

Shoei for me too.

Yeah plus one on the full face. Wouldn't ride on an open face

An expensive helmet that does not fit your head properly is a complete waste of money.

Fit is the key issue, so you need to understand how a helmet should fit and then try them on.

A deent motorcycle dealer will advise on proper fit.

OK, back to reality.

You are going to do a few track days.

You probably won't be going much faster than on the road, a thing called corners tends to get in the way of ultimate speed.

There will be other cars on track, but unlike the public highway they'll all be going in the same direction.

You are driving a road car, with all it's passive and active safety equipment functioning.

An open face helmet is fine.

A motorbike style full face I find restrictive.

You can spend as much or as little as you like.

New helmets start at around £60 on Demon Tweeks, they meet the standard required. (there isn't a standard for track days)

Just make sure it fits correctly.

I bought a £500 helmet that's nice and light 2nd hand from ebay for £120.

Waits for the cries and absurb comments...

Still in the box, completely unmarked and light/comfortable.

It does me fine.

Also make sure that the strap is fastened securely! You would be amazed how many competitors arrive at the start of a rally stage without their helmet done up. I won't let them start a stage without it.http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/helmets

Make sure it fits.

Don't put stickers on it or paint it.

Look after it, if it has an impact consider replacing it.

Don't buy second hand; you don't know the history.

My father now retired was technical director for Kangol Helmets now Helmets Integrated Systems Ltd from 1977 till his retirement in 2002, lived and breathed them so I have heard quite a bit.

Thanks everyone, Demon Tweeks are only 40mins from me so I'll pop down and try a few on, they seem to have a few options between the £50-£150 which is about what I was thinking of spending :)

Well when you put it like that. True!

He has got the safety advantages of being in a car.

I dont usually wear a helmet for day to day driving.

So maybe an open face would be fine haha.

Had enough near misses rock climbing and on the MTB so I fully agree, never understand guys that don't wear appropriate and properly fitted helmets, like my skull as it is!

I'm in the same boat having had an MTBing crash without a helmet, you soon realise how much you need the proper equipment.

I've got an account with Moore Large so let me know if you need any kit at trade price ;)

As above, just make sure it is comfortable and fits properly. Any motorcycle dealer will have some for you to try out and if they don't have one to suit your budget and that fits go somewhere else. For most helmets you will probably need to get one that's a good snug fit as they will loosen up a bit as the padding settles down but make sure its not too tight especially across the forehead as you'll end up with a headache.

Also ask for the box and store it in a cupboard etc away from sunlight. If you've not tried any on before they will feel quite strange, but a good fitter will be able to advise. If you have one of the big biker clothing outlets by you they will have more of a selection. If you decide to get one online as above each manufacturers helmets fit differently so make sure you've tried one on somewhere else first.

If you have an open face, you probably won't be able to have a ride in an open car if you get the chance.

Personally I'm not bothered and I'll be buying a Hedtec Ralpido which seem to meet all the current regs and also fit (me) very well.

I wouldn't really know how to search for the *right* helmet on eBay and I can't be bothered trekking around trying them on to know what to go for.

I wouldn't get one of Ebay.

you are putting your head in it after all.

What was that other thing to get? Someone posted the video of a driver being shunted into the barrier..

[clicky click]

'Passenger heading straight to the impact',    He caused it did he not, by not just lifting off, and letting the guy go?

Exactly, tried to prove a point instead he just wrecked his car and looked like a kn*b iirc can't be bothered to watch it again

There is a world of difference between doing a track day in a road car and going competitive racing or using them on a motorbike.

For track time I bought a cheap 'Spada' open face lid, comfortable and fits well was £40 I think. As Bossfox says, you're not doing crazy speeds and not using it everyday. Open face will limit you to hard top cars without cages but think about the chances of you going in one and decide for yourself.

I wouldnt dream of using the cheap one on my bike, nor would I go racing with it but it does the job I need it to do.

I got one about a year ago (quantum v) and its small, best fitting I've ever had, but!

The worst I've for wind noise and will never have another as I don't like earplugs

As above....and was £400!!......if I do ever get another it'll probably be either Shoei or shuberth
