Poor MGP 1.2 hpt1

Featured Replies

Hello!

My trusty 08 Fabia has recent been experiencing poor MPG recently

Used to be achieving 40-45 mpg but in the last 3 months i have been getting 33mpg and that is driving like a saint!

Tracking is all good and it had a major service in the summer and is currently sitting at 70'000 miles

Any ideas what could be effecting the mpg?

Many thanks in advance!

  • If the sensors have packed in, I'd never have to service it again? muwhahaha

  • AFAIK Uk spec 1.2 htp engines do not have the oil quality/level sensor fitted and do not support variable service intervals, certainly not on 08 year.   Poor fuel consumption and lumpy idle are typi

Is the mpg calculated via the MFD/maxidot or a proper calculation from pump to pump?

Id try the latter to confirm the figures

Crikey. Hmm.

Checked all the obvious? Tyre pressures? Etc?

Tires brand new, pressure spot on, tracking true and true

Engine is rough on idle with a occasional "shudder"

Was the Air Filter changed at the 'Major Service', or have you looked at it to see its condition?

it was changed, all clean

So that is the basics, tyres, air filter,

so does the receipt show the correct oil for your engine was used at the service?

Got one of these and, as with all Fabias,  cruise at 65 at you can get good fuel consumption usually if not in to a headwind.

Drive at over 70 mph and the economy dives in to the 30s.

Later models had taller 5th gear which helped.

Winter does not help.

Is there an A road route rather than motorway?    Usually shows 5-10 mpg better doing this.

Q. Why did the muppets at VAG-Skoda not add a sixth gear (so 3k revs was 75 mph in top) and get the CO2 down below 120 grams and get the road tax down to £30?

A. Because they do not give a **** for UK etc customers and want you to buy a TSI even when the HTP can actually serve you better for a work horse with no worries about turbos going south.

LOL I just purchased a Fabia 1.2 HTP 2008, with under 90k on the clock, will pick up next Friday, shall check out if she has the same low MPG figures, hopefully not

Just tickle the throttle, imagine there is a wodden block under the accelerator peddle and you cannot press it down more than a centimetre or so.  Keepin the revs between 2 and 3.5K and not much over 3k revs in top unless down a long hill or a good tail wind.  Should get upper 40s mpg if you also let the car slow down naturally rather than brake and also look after tyre pressure and air filter which cost peanuts.

Aye, sounds just like normal economical driving tbh, any idea what revs it sits at doing 70?

Depends which year who have.  The 58 plate is doing around 3250 revs at 70 mph so a little bit past max torque, later one more like 3k revs I gather.    I find the drivers seat not supportive enough on journeys over 100 miles compared to the vrs seat but great town car as warms up well quickly.

Very helpful, may just have to sit at 60-70 for those extra miles  :D . We'll see on the 100 mile drive home =]

May also be worth mentioning it's an estate, mpg drops :(

Not by much, if at all. Aerodynamics are better i guess, as its longer. Estate also reportedly give a better ride.

My 2013 70hp averages around 45-50mpg. I did a 1 hour stint on the motorway last year at between 70-80mph and averaged 51mpg.

I drove 45 miles last night from Buxton to stockport. Mixture of roads. A roads, 30mph and some motorway on the way back, and averaged 47mpg. I wasnt hanging around and i even stopped in mcdonalds for a Big Mac which dropped it about 3mpg.

Mums got the older lower geared 65bhp in an 05 polo. I drove from here to Southampton last year. 440 miles all around and averaged 45mpg. Kept it at 65-70mph most the way.

The OP's 33mpg certainly isnt right IMO.

Did you notice the drop just since the service? Or?

Used any different fuel?

Lumpy idle? Could be a fuelling problem then could it?

Items to check

Coolant temperature is getting to correct value (i.e. thermostat)

Lambda probe(s) may be contaminated or failing (check emissions it may be running rich) this can cause lumpy idle.

the car is driven intermittently, maybe one a week? (uni student here) hadn't noticed anything until a journey from Plymouth to Northampton and back i only averaged 33mpg, where as at the end of September was achieving 45mpg on long journeys, but nothing as seemed to change...

Its a great car, very torquey engine for the size! lets hope you do not have the same MPG as me!

i would assume so, was taken to a VAG specialist, these problems started to occur much after the service

There are other members here that had cars serviced at VAG specialists & the wrong oil was put in.

? So do you have an Invoice showing the oil used.?

Did you change where you get your fuel,

or has the MPG just dropped as the weather changed months after your car was serviced.?

So new tyres and pressure perfect!

What tyres got fitted and when, and what are the pressures you set, and when where they checked?

new tires were fitted after the mpg drop, no change in mpg :S

oil i think was VW 504 00

Haha better aero sounds good =] but your I would assume is maintained by yourself, whereas mine, was maintained by previous owners, but FSH so may be alright, but nothing beats maintaining it yourself

Im sure youll be fine mate.

Theyre pretty bulletproof engines really.
