Poor MGP 1.2 hpt1

Featured Replies

Its a great car, very torquey engine for the size! lets hope you do not have the same MPG as me!

haha yeah, I noticed on the test drive, the mechanicals seemed to be in good condition, acceleration wise, feels fast considering it's only a 1.2

will let you know how I get on!

So it is a Mystery why your MPG dropped after the Service and before the Autumn /Winter and the new Tyres.

Maybe stop driving like a saint.

Im sure youll be fine mate.

Theyre pretty bulletproof engines really.

good to know =] one thing I noticed on the history was that the mileage and time between services varied alot, don't have the exact figures of me atm but I would guess this is due to the variable servicing periods? More used to the conventional annual/10,000 mile service intervals

may be is should try ;) it is tempting but being a broke student wouldn't help my situation much!

a quick phone call to a mechanic friend recommended cleaning the MAP sensor or even replacing it entirely, is this something you have experience with?

Yeah could be set to variable servicing.

You can always switch it back to fixed intervals (:

i have never once felt underpowered in that car!

Haha maybe, if I stay with variable I'm assuming the only way I'll know is when the onboard computer decides the car needs servicing?

Yeah, tbh its about what you expect from it, driving the family 2.0 DTi vectra, feels underpowered sometimes going up hills

third gear is a treat, will go up anything

Yes

Theres a sensor that sensors the condition of the oil

502 grade is usually used for fixed servicing. Where as a slightly better grade 504 is used for variable. Iirc

AFAIK Uk spec 1.2 htp engines do not have the oil quality/level sensor fitted and do not support variable service intervals, certainly not on 08 year.

Poor fuel consumption and lumpy idle are typical symptoms of a failing lambda (o2) sensor. There are 2 on the htp, one pre cat and the other post cat.

Okay brilliant! how should I go about checking the O2 sensor for defects and faults?

Another sensor we had going wrong was the camshaft position sensor which led to incorrect firing and that could also explain it.

Think the VCD will tell you which, if any, is meaning one or more cylinder is not burning right which could easily explain poor MPG.

Easiest way to test the lambda probes would be to pop round to an mot tester, ask him to check the emission lambda figure with his test gear.

Best to use an independent as probably they would only charge a tenner or less.

Make sure the engine is at full working temperature and he sticks the probe well into the exhaust.

Value read should be between 0.97 and 1.03,

Cheers Xman! will get right on that at the weekend! if they were faulty how much and how long could they take to replace?

Lol, gonna bookmark this thread incase I turn out to have the same issue, a 1.2 with 33mpg doesn't sound fun

So I'm assuming it IS possible for the car to be on variable servicing?

Fabia 2s became possible to go on to Variable at around the end of 2011 but as someone else said I would have doubted that would be the HTP engine but only the TSIs and twin-charge and turbo-wiesels.

They need the oil sensy-thing and the inbiult electronics which only came out then on the Fabia 2 I gather.  Mine when over to variable after first service and is a 61 plate and I get about 19K miles between services.  (It has probably burnt through its 3.6 litres of oil at least once in that time anyway!).

You can use the longlife oil but the computer may not have the gubbins to work out the long service internal.

Fair enough, just curious though as to why those websites would specify that the engine in the car can undergo variable servicing specifically with the 1.2 HTP

Because uk spec is not the same as other eu countries where variable servicing is more the norm.

The HTP was given an overhaul though.

Not sure if the revision included the sensor.

I'll ask when i take mine in for a service

Hi,

Just bought a 57 plate HTP 1.2 fabia. Can you get the dashboard display to show mpg. It seems to indicate in the manual you can by pressing a button on the right side wind screen wiper arm switch. But mine does not have that button.

My dashboard just shows time at the top, trip mileage in the middle and tital mileage at the bottom.

Thx
