Vrs tuning

Anybody know why they did the vrs as a 1.4 why not do a bigger engine and make it more tunable for us can't tune 1.4 up much without going massively involved with new engine internals

Suspension, tyres and brake tuning will get you on to the straight bits faster, imo the standard engine has enough waft to warrant a better chassis set up so that's where I will spend my coin.

  • Not entirely true. There are tuners abroad that have tuned a few vRS Fabias and Cupras up to 300+ bhp with completely stock engines. I follow the owners closely and the cars run fine as "everyday" car

They did its a mk1 :D

You can tune the 1.4 up some people have them running at 230bhp

Didn't want to compete with golf or Octavia?

What extra power are you thinking of?

I'm just going for stage 1 not taking it far just people have said much further start melting plugs and piston etc

Mines 218 bhp with limited mods (remap and FMIC) and quick enough. The FMIC only adds around 8bhp so by just spending £400 to £500 you can get 210 bhp. I've changed the spark plugs to NGK 7's and so far everything is OK but possibly less miles to the gallon now with the cooler plugs. I have the standard air intake and exhaust so if I wanted I'm sure I could get over 220 bhp easily. There are gains to be had but unfortunately there indeed are design issues with this engine.

Not entirely true, many people now check the internet prior to making purchases - think Amazon and TripAdvisor. It should be of no surprise if such people look for a discussion forum as part of evaluating a car prior to purchase.

There are a couple of posters here who by repeatedly bumping threads whenever they aren't prominent enough and endlessly making unsubstantiated allegations about the inevitable occasional problems. These guys seem to have dedicated their lives to a mission to ensure that the Fabia vRS is perceived at as a complete disaster - it isn't, it has a great engine and a brilliant gearbox. Skoda have understandably decided to avoid the cut-price boy racer market with the Fabia Mk. III.

As to "tuning" an already powerful and complex car - leave it alone or man up and accept the possible consequence without complaint.

when my warrenty is out, I will be putting a hybrid on and turning it up :)

I disagree with your comments as there have been cases where the standard engines have failed due to oil issues, spark plugs, pistons etc so these guys shouldn't have to "man up".

I get the feeling you possibly work for Skoda?

Ok, some people may get a little over excited but when a person, normally someone who is posting for first time because they aren't interested in tuning but a piston has burnt out or issues of excessive oil then it is a big deal to them as we're talking possible £1,000's of repair bills.

Anyway, no one was attaching anyone until you mentioned.

vxh26,

the same posts are bumped time after time because new owners get caught out by some of the faulty 1,800 1.4 TSI CAVE 132kw Minimum Engined vRS sold in the UK

between June 2010 & Sept - Oct 2012.

It is no Internet myth.

Please ask your friends at VW or Skoda if that is now over 25% that have now failed, or had issues.

(As to Tuning, tuning can safely be done when you have a sound engine and follow the basic and obvious first steps.

vxh26 can tell you what these are, after all about a year ago he first test drove a Twincharger.

& then asked about where the Oil Filter was, such is his Mechanical knowledge of these engines.)

They are great engines and gearboxes which is why so many members on this forum have bought one or more Twinchargers &

like them very much and have no issues with them.

vxh26 has not yet purchased one i believe, but he can maybe correct me on that,. and maybe now he has had more than a Dealership Road Test in one.

here yet again is a link that might give you some hints & a warning before tuning or modifying CAVE engine,

or what to look out for.

This applies no matter whos Remap you will use.

& if you are Remapping a CTHE, remember your Original Manufacturers Warranty on the Engine will be Void.

(Be aware that the Revised Engine & Engine Management from 2012 - 2014 CTHE is much more reliable,.but some have failed and been replaced

among the 1,200 Skoda fitted, but only low numbers.)

Oh wait.... :wait:

A small point off topic, but from something mentioned here & possible £1,000 repair bills.

£1,000 was the story back in 2010-2011 when the Seat Ibiza Cupra Twinchargers & then the Fabia VRS were getting New Pistons & Rings fitted.

Sine New / Fefurbished ' Base Engines,  CAVE, CAD, CTHE have been getting fitted by Warranty or Extended Warranty Companies.

think nearer £3,000 for Parts & £1000- £1,500 in Labour @ Main Dealers.

Think being Asked £170 for an Oil Consumption test & another couple of hundred for a Breather Pipe / Valve mod & ECU Update at Main Dealers when the Original Warranty is

expired.

Pretty much the same figures when it is in Euro.

So let us be advised by vxh26 on Manning Up & biting the bullet if you end up with one of the very few CAVE engine cars that have issues,

the odds are what they are, very slim.

Not entirely true. There are tuners abroad that have tuned a few vRS Fabias and Cupras up to 300+ bhp with completely stock engines. I follow the owners closely and the cars run fine as "everyday" cars as well. One of them worked on mine as well and I run around 230 bhp with a simple stage 1 + FMIC + CAI without any issue at all, much higher than your typical stage 1 figures. I would say that indeed the engine wasn't one of the easiest to work with and due to the first bad results some tuning houses had, they decided to withdraw from further development thus giving the impression this engine is not tune-friendly. There are however a few that have been working on it for 4 years now and the results they are getting have justified their efforts and time.

The results depends how big you wallet is and the time and effort can put into it.

Another point is that Skoda or most manufacturers don't design cars for them to be tuned.  :D

Very true and why should they. However, their advert could make you believe that it was a different story.

I don't think the OP is about money (primarily) but rather about absolutely having to mess with engine internals in order to go to some serious power. That's why I said that - at a knowledgeable tuner that has spent some serious time with this engine - this is not the case even for cars that are running 300 bhp. Their engines are completely stock. Take my stage 1 if you like, I have not spent that much in order to justify a higher result but apparently the map makes the difference. I remember back in 2011 some of the first stage 2 cars around here were around or even below these figures. I know that at least for this tuner that I speak about it was almost a personal challenge to be able to study this engine in-depth and get to these impressive levels he is today. Probably not the easiest project I would agree, and that is why most tuners have stopped development for anything beyond stage 1. So not impossible but difficult/time-consuming/complex you can put whatever label you prefer on.

Sy had a loba hybrid on.... he tuned it to a reliable 250bhp..... he should have got nearer 300bhp , as he was no where near the boost the turbo could give, as everytime he turned it up, it would misfire.... and the tuners couldnt stop it misfiring (different maps, plugs, coils ect ect ) so he settled on 250bhp....

there is a french guy on here I think who is running about 270bhp.....

Somebody now on the forum might have Sy's old vRS.

I think it was traded in still with as Stage 2 Map after the engine had been rebuilt with new pistons & rings after crying enough.

Keeping this in the same thread as it's tuning related. Has anyone had a hybrid turbo done yet? Would be interesting to know what results and problems occurred if any.

All of the owners I mentioned are running hybrid turbos AFAIK. I don't think they are running LOBAs though, overly expensive for no reason. I think theirs have been developed/modified by the tuner himself.

Does the tuner have a web site?
