New member, new car and possible CTS failure

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Have had a Fabia Vrs for 3 weeks now :)  Been working through all the problems...

So far i have fitted:

New timing belt kit

New Aux belt

Std air filter

oil change

Front and rear discs and pads

New track rod ends

New steering rods

New ball joints

New lower arms

New ARB bushes

New drop links

Team Heko windeflectors

Cupra R Splitter

Ordered and awaiting delivery/fitting:

Jom Coilovers(I know lol, budget would not allow AP's ect..)

Mondeo drop links.

So been busy lol, so to the main reason for the post !!

When we were doing the timing belt, we could not get the fan to kick in, the temp gauge has never quite reached 90, its a ball hair under and it remains there once heated.  I got the fans to kick on after the timing belt change by switching on the A/C, however it was more of a pulse rather than a constant.  So is it possible my CTS is fecked and or my fan switch also ??

ANy help is much appreciated !!

I don't think the CTS can bring on the rad fan, only the thermoswitch in the rad. Not sure you'd expect much fan action in this weather though?

Possible thermostat problem if it never quite gets to temp. Could be the CTS not reading right though, and affecting the gauge/ECU. Much cheaper and easier to change the CTS as a first step (Or try to find the appropriate resistance readings at different temps and check it). Could check the thermostat by a bit of educated 'feeling of the rad hoses' as it warms up. Should be a sudden change from one of the hoses being stone cold to warmer, rather than a gradual warming that would indicate a failed stat. Not sure which hose on your car though.

Yeah, im thinking the CTS not reading correctly hence the car not getting to 90 and engagng the fan..?

Correct me if im wrong, but if the thermostat was stuck open or broken then the temp gauge would rise and fall ??

Agreed on the rise and fall if it were thermostat, but not on the CTS/fan. The thermoswitch in the rad is what senses the temperature as far as fan control goes. A/C is also interconnected somehow though, so that might be why you see the fan(s) come on when that's enabled.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/294383-the-mki-fabia-fuse-layout-post-updated-with-bulb-types/ shows the fuses for the fans, in the battery-box fuse area, possibly also one in the cabin fusebox, can't remember.  There's also a fan control module hanging off the left/NS chassis leg, near the thermoswitch on the rad. Has been known for these to play up, maybe just through contact corrosion where the wiring plugs in.

Hey wino,

You have been great help buddy, I really appreciate it !!

We did get the roasting hot pipe then cool as the system was running, so I think putting all the info together it looking very like a CTS.

Next question is, have you any idea if the location on the Vrs engine ?? I know on my Cupra it was the right hand side of the block.

Thanks again buddy !!

It's on the right of the engine also, sort of at the back. I'm sure if you look under the fuel pump on the cylinder head you should see it.

What's the part number for the CTS chaps? :)

I need One too!

Went to euro car parts today, they only had a black CTS...

I thought all the revised CTS were green ??

Never bought it as I wanted to check first, anyone shed any light ??

Cheers
