7 days into ownership - Found a pothole

Featured Replies

It was dark, no way of seeing the damn thing. I'm not usually precious about cars, but it's only 6 months old and new to me!

Very small graze on the wheel, still bloody annoying.

Going to buy a new wheel, swap it over and get the original repaired. It will happen again I'm sure.

Where's the best place to buy a new wheel? Standard VRS alloy.

And, wheel repairer recommendations for somewhere in Hampshire/Berkshire/Surrey please.

Suspect dealer for new wheel as they are not really a wheel that's been around for a while.

I share your pain, buddy.  Mine was only two months old when a pothole pushed the wheel rim through the sidewall of the tyre.

I bought a new wheel from my dealer (reasonable price) and I carry the scraped wheel as a spare.

Birmingham City Council paid for the replacement tyre.

Bodyshop/valeter at Inchape Toyata In Sandhurst, very good and very reasonable, I'll pm you some details, Mark and his Dad are easy to work with too.

I paid arund 300 quid for a new alloy for my vrs, as they have diamond cut finish,( not sure which type you have on yours)i dont think the repair which was nearly 150 quid would have been 100% as it was a deep score that would take a lot of machining out, as the car was getting ready for tyres I bought a new one and now use the scraped one as a proper spare, it fits in the well but about 3/4" proud and the jack holder fits after trimming the side and base

My Alloys in Basingstoke - competitive on price, but a far superior diamond finish when compared to other repair agents. If it is only a slight scuff, make sure it is repainted and lacquered if it is recut.

Thanks, I've read good things about them. Still going to buy a new wheel, will get the current one repaired and keep aside as a spare.

Attached.

It's only a small gaze, reckon it will need grinding out, repaint and lacquer.

About £158 before shipping for a Gemini here http://www.eskoda-shop.cz/rozmer-R18

I think the UK price is about twice that. Hard luck on the damage.

The state of the roads in the uk certainly don't lend themselves to nice alloys with low profile tyres.

Sadly true

Wow, that's more a bomb crater, than a pot hole!  :D

Thames Water new sump pump receiver well at the bottom of King George V playing fields, new 600m sewers going too, been at since last July, trying to get around NorthCamp is a PITA.

Three way traffic lights on the end of our road, one way access only to the park's cark park used for 300 pupils Junior school as well, pick up and drop off times are like armageddon, so many MPV's driven badly by so many mothers.

North camp's got some monster potholes to be avoided too, at least they've dealt with most of the BVR (A331) now, that was shocking for a road only 15 years old.

Not that I think I'd go to the bother myself but, some motorists have successfully claimed for damage caused by potholes, som interesting stuff on this link:- http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/pothole-claims

Ah yes, I try to avoid Northcamp for that very reason. I used to live there, other side of Farnborough now.

Two years later, all four wheels have war wounds (only one was done by me  ). I'm not quite as precious about the car as I used to be, but I still wince when yet another chunk is a taken out of a wheel!

I'm going to get all four wheels refurbed once I find somewhere local that can either do them in a day or lend me a spare set of wheels. I'll be getting rid of the diamond cut finish, just have them sprayed over in a solid colour.

Yep, that is what I do when I get the opportunity. Alloy wheel specialist near me is pretty good at doing a proper job and easing the diamond cuts so the finish sticks better. On some wheels and some colours you don't even notice its not diamond cut.

One set they did still going well after 10 years whereas the white lacquer worm has got into some diamond cuts in under a year.

Very nice, that's what I had in mind but in a gun metal grey.

I take it you have a spare set of wheels? EDIT - I notice they have a same day collection service.

Yeah I brought a secondhand set for refurb & then I'll sell the new ones when my new car arrives. Unmarked brand new wheels command a good price to offset the cost of the black ones I really wanted.

I take it you're not local any more?

Not exactly, the other side of Alton now, about 20 miles from Farnborough.

Yep good ideas the refurbs as above and what mine came as standard in anthracite style from 2nd hand dealer purchase

If they hadn't then I'd only be beating myself up for scraping them after I got it anyway.

Being already refurbished makes for very easy repair (DIYable) to almost perfect standard ( minus diamond cut!).

Vanity-style diamond cut alloys only have a limited life to all but those with OCD way beyond normal :D I think its only to sell cars and not for day to day drivers.

Its a bit like comparing what a partner looks like now to what they do 5 years after you marry them. You just accept it is what it is and move on ;)

Not sure I am OCD but I have been the only driver of my MkII and MkIII, neither set of Octy wheels has been kerbed since I started driving the MkII in 2008. I wince when I see people driving over kerbs or into kerbs, usually as they are terrible at parking. I recently watched a lady struggle to reverse out an XC90 in a tightish car park and failing to accomplish a pretty basic manoeuvre she simply melted down and drove straight forwards over the high ramp protecting the grass. The only damage to any of my recent cars was done by 1. Tyre 'fitters-cowboys' not using a rim protector 2. An EX-Skoda dealership dropping the front wheels on their faces when they were removed to clean a sticking caliper during a MoT visit. Refurbed really well by a local firm. The picture was taken the night before it sold in 2015, 2 years after they'd been refurbed.

Fair enough but the Mk3's don't do anyone any favours. Those mk2's appear to be much more forgiving alloys with less prominent faces ( there is no mirror sharp edge jutting out in the above ^^).

I even got supposed tyre protection with my last purchase and it didn't make that much difference, but I'm with you, I do wince about making the damage and think a bit of care can go a long way.

The vRS mk3 definitely has a vanity factor over practicality and always posts about scoring wheels as a consequence.

Best not to play them at their own game IMO and drop the mirror at the first sign of significant damage, in favour for an easier life would be my priority. But If I'd bought the car new and had that I'd definitely have a bit of a cry about it first lol.
