Octavia 3 vRS or Golf R?

Featured Replies

My Octavia is nearing 3 years old and it has been fantastic especially since the stage one Revo map. Pound for pound easily the best car I have owned (and that includes an E46 M3).

I would love a Mk3 (petrol) but nearly new ones with the spec I want are going for £25k plus. As a minimum DSG, Columbus, Black design pack and the Extreme alloys. I would say leather but the fake leather on my current one is one of my worst points about the car.

Am I better to just spend another 5k and get myself a Golf R? Or wait a year until both models depreciate further.

(or wait two years and get something in the next price bracket - S4, RS4, V60 Polestar, M3/4)

Apologies for some reason I have managed to create two threads!

Could a mod somehow merge the two or delete this thread?

I have had a mk3 vrs diesel for 6 months and love the car very much £28k with all spec traded in a yeti 170 elegance which was also a great car but found boot space a bit restrictive

Mate purchased golf R which arrived at same time ,as you have already said extra £5k+ on top of my price but to be honest a lot of the golf interior is same as vrs but that is where similarities end I personally don't think you can compare the two cars even against a petrol vrs performance wise golf is phenomenal acceleration and road holding is unbelievable!

if I had the money would probably stick with a vrs but petrol version ,there is only so much performance you can safely use on the road and the vrs is bigger in interior space and boot space but just to throw a curve ball have you considered the Seat Leon Cupra 280bhp trick diff???

Keep your car another 2 years devalues more so requires a bigger cash outlay when you eventually change???

Mk3 is another step up in quality from Mk2 which I also owned!

Thanks for that. I had a 2007 Leon Cupra and was impressed with it but to be honest the interior was so cheap.

I will have to test drive them both and see which one I go for.

The Golf R is great but VW have been pretty much giving them away under leases which would concern me greatly regarding residuals since in two and three years there will be large amounts of used ones coming on the market

Check out the prices for used and demo Octavia vRS- Dropping rather more than an R used and demo.

Good indicator are mk6 used values, still quite a few in the mid £20 k's

The Octy VRS is more in line with the non PP pack Golf GTi in terms of cost and performance hence the AWD 300ps Golf R is a chunk more cash but have a look at the broker sites and you'll see very decent discounts on the R again - some around £4,000. :)

Having owned 3 of the cars you mention, and another as a loaner, I can hopefully give you some pointers :)

I came from a stage 1 mk2 Octavia vRS to a B8.5 S4 to my new Golf 7R. I also borrowed a B8 RS4 when the main dealer was trying to get me on the Audi upsell carousel.

Firstly I really loved my Octavia vRS, but in standard form they are (as you know), a little lack lustre. With a map they are transfomed, however this then highlights the weaknesses in the chasis, as handling & traction become annoying. However, still a great car for the money.

This led me to wanting AWD, so I jumped into a 6month old S4. S-tronic with the V6 supercharged engine, mmmm, it's nice, but like the Octy doesn't feel fast, unlike the Octy it is :) But a lot if this is down to AWD and the gearbox, raw engine power is not fantastic. I reckon 1-2secs of the 0-60 time is shaved off purely on the afore mentioned points. I quickly put a Revo map on it, and it turned it into a beast (411bhp), and properly quick. But the chasis still isn't the best, and it feels like a big car & isn't that nimble.

Interior on the S4 is great, and the Supersports seats are lush, as is the B&O sounds.

I had the RS4 for a weekend, and I will sum up this by saying, it is a stage 1 S4, with bulging wings & 2 extra cylinders :) very nice but not worth the premium over the S4 if you don't mind tuning.

Now to the Golf R. I've had mine 6 months now, and I can honestly say it's the best all round car I've owned. It's quick, feels quicker than the S4, but on paper it's the same. I think mainly down to power delivery as it's turbocharged as opposed to supercharged. The handling is sublime, besides a few choice sports cars, very little will keep up through the twisties.

The interior is not quite as good as the S4, but that's VW v Audi, and to be expected, but you could spec the leather seats and top media system & be nearly there. I would say however the standard seats are surprisingly comfortable.

If I were to buy the Golf knowing what I know now, I would spec the DSG & Dynaudio sound system. However I will be swapping in 18months to the new 5pot RS3, which will hopefully be my perfect car :)

Thats because new Octys are heavily discounted with £4k off at least its too early to tell at depreciation on the Golf R but i reckon the percentage lost over 3 years will be higher

You could lease a Golf R for £269pm with everything included , why would you want an Octy instead ?

But buying with your own hard earned is a different story

25k for a used VRs they have seen you coming. I could get your spec new for under 20k easily

Where have you seen an R on lease for that price?

Thread on pistonheads , think that deal is over now though but loads on there took it up

Loads is a throw  away number, with no value! Lots of people say but don't do.

There was a limited number available at that price and they all went , perhaps not all to ph members but it was a sweet deal

Look on central vehicle leasing. The Golf R is £222 per month inc vat.....

Saw a link on here last night £271 a month, 24 months, £2K down, 8k miles p.a. must be some GFV on the R is all I can say.

Peronally, I couldn't live with that small a boot now, if the same deal becomes available on the Wagon R I might be tempted.

As above, take a look at leasing an R. Will cost less than the depreciation on buying a new one. Less than a PCP too.

No Matthew, I mean the estate version of the R.

They could say £89 / month, it's not the true cost. They are just loading the deposit to reduce the monthly payments. It still works out near £300 / month all in :)

Really 999pooch, I put down a grand on my £20,305 car and pay £267 for 42 months, two grand and £271 a month for 24 months looks pretty Fn good for a £35K car or am I missing something ok there is a £408 extra milage charge but still I don't see your true cost analyst.

Care to explain.....

Yes, you're missing something.

THE DEPOSIT!!!

Lease deals (nearly) always have a deposit.

So there will be term (months) + deposit (months)

e.g. common deals are 2 year term =23+3 (3 months @ 1st payment + 23 months thereafter)

or 3 year term = 35+6 (6 months @ month 1 + 35 months thereafter)

On some of the cheaper deals they load the deposit to (23 + 9), so you pay 9 months on month 1, the subsequent 23 months are obviously much cheaper, but these cheap monthly figures are what get banded about.

On the last deal, the true cost is 32 months divided over 24 months, a much higher, truer cost :)

Don't forget, on a lease there is no equity. Deposit isn't refundable or carried over. It's just security for the lease company. Once you pay your deposit, it's gone...

But, you are ignoring my example between my car and a Golf R above :-

My £20-1/2K has a total cost for 2 years of £7408

The £35K golf has a total cost for 2 years of £8912

So the hair your spliting is worht less than 1504 quid or £752 p.a.

As I said, if they can do that deal with a bigger boot I'll have thank you very much.
