It's abysmal inside isn't it, when I got in one at launch time it felt like a cross between a kids toy and a basic Ford from the 70's, no surprise you felt like that regarding the difference.

Now im one who doesn't think the Octy 3 is abysmal inside. Door cards yes, but apart from that, it seems pretty good. Better door cards and IRS, and id be very happy.

Skoda are in some ways trying to pitch the new Superb as a class slightly above the Mondeo/Passat so materials need to be top notch and better than anything in the mid range sector.

Personally, I think they want the Superb to compete more with Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Mazda 6 whereas VW are trying to keep a distinct class gap between Superb and Passat so they can push the Passat further up market to bridge the gap to BMW 3/5 Series, Mercedes C/E Class and even the Audi A4/A6 hence the twin turbo and Hybrid engine options.

To meet the demands of competing for Mondeoman, Superb is clearly based on a hatchback format whereas Passat competes in the exec saloon sector.

How I'm reading it is it will have a lot more road presence than the B8 Passat Matt, which will make it a better choice than a B8, plus anything Skoda always feels screwed together better than a VW, might be a placebo but thats how my gut always went with it, Sup 1 better than the B5.5, Sup II better than the B6 by a mile and I expect it'll be the same when it comes to the MK 3.

Hope ur right but that's not the way it went with O3 vs Golf 7. Superb II was a proper 2008 Skoda design hence why it was loads better than B6 Passat which dates back to 2005. We'll find out soon anyway.

VW , may be trying its best to place VW brands higher to Skoda but somehow I feel it lack a distinct design feature to do so unlike Merc,BMW, Audi etc.

Skoda has that look and feel while VW is quite in clean lines.

Just hope that VW does not Kill Skoda doing so.

Is this really the superb III or the face lifted Octy? I really don't see a big difference, apart from the air conditioning 'off' button not saying off,

The air conditioning controls are actually exactly same as on a top specced Octy.

I was expecting to see the new all LCD dash replacing the maxi dot in the top spec model, but apparently VAG is still saving that for VW and Audi...

I think it's the door cards and armrest letting the mk3 down. The mk1 still looks pretty good.

Was just thinking that. The mk1 looks the most luxurious out of the three IMO.

Unfortunately that also means no handbrake turns.  :notme:

You can still do them with electro handbrakes it just doesn't have the same effect actually judging how much anchor you want at any given time as you go around, fwd isn't the same for HBT's as rwd anyway, you should've had a Capri 2.8i these babies would go round easy and best of all the most delicious power sliding capabilities if you knew how to balance the throttle with the steering properly.

Ah you can't beat a good old MkII Escort for that kind of action :)

You can still have a lot of fun with 4x4 and a snowy surface.  :notme:

Interior comparison of SI, SII & SIII

A bit late I know, but only just looked at these pics.

The colour doesn't help the Mk3. Once we see a picture with cream/ beige seats, it may make it look slightly better. Overall the seats in the Mk3 look c**p compared to the Mk1 and 2. Those stupid creases just look wrong. The rest just looks like a bog standard interior. Less going for it than my Octy with that colour scheme.

Ive never seen a Mk2 with the wood veneers before, but it really does make the interior stand out. The Mk1 looks super comfy, although a bit old man (Rover 75/ X/ S type) like.

Overall-

Mk1- A very special interior, with a bit of character. Should become a classic like the Rover 75 and X/ S Type.

Mk2- Needs to have the wood veneers. Looks a lovely comfy motorway cruiser, albeit from experience, some knobs/ buttons could be improved. With the dark interior and no wood veneers, it isn't that much of an improvement over the Octy 3. Yes some parts are better, but some are worse. An interior like in your picture hides the bits that need improving.

Mk3- No, just no, not with that colour scheme. Those seats also need replacing. Even assuming wood veneers are possible, the design means they are unlikely to make much of a difference. Highly unlikely id want to swap my Octy for one.

Id have preferred a Mk2 with slight improvements.

And I'm sure (faux) wood is available for the Elegance spec (if that's what they plan to call it).

We'll have to wait a few months for a UK brochure.

I'm convinced that I'll still be driving my Superb for a year or so, if only to wait for a 16 plate.

The Mk II certainly has the wood inserts (well maybe not quite real wood!) from elegance up and in some mid range models too.  I have a lighter shade of wood inserts on my L&K and they look very nice indeed.  I agree about the lighter interiors colours - here's the ivory interior in the Mk III.  The wood veneer sadly doesn't appear to be offered in the Mk III  (see quote below from the press release)

The choice of trim strips for the dashboard and door covering has been reinterpreted.

In total, there are four trim variants: metallic grey, light aluminium-look, dark

aluminium-look and Piano Black.

Trust me James those new seats will be good, they are based on the B6 Passat Sport seats and those are some of the best I ever owned for comfort, the rest of the range seats were gank though.

They just look wrong. I shall take your word for it, although my old Focus was plenty comfy enough for me. Octy not quite so, but we shall see what these are like. When I get back home in a month or so, I will take a look at the dealers.

I'm quite confident that SIII's seats will be brilliant and at least as good as SII in terms of comfort & support. In terms of functionality, additional manual cushion length adjust would have been a good add but I don't think SIII comes with that. Looks like the cushion length has been slightly increased with additional support (compared to SII) for under thigh but its not manually adjustable.
