I'd avoid blackbox like the plague, makes insurance more expensive if you brake harshly to avoid another road user or are hard on the throttle, also can cost more if you aren't within its curfew.

The ones I looked at don't have curfews any more "ingenue" and "insure the box "

Did you have one yourself ?

The problem is she's got a years ncd as first year was with privilege as a named driver

But I do think that it's transferable from privilege

No I looked at them last year but would cost me more due to my mileage too

Hi

I'm getting around £650 for an 18'year old on a CITIgo 60ps 3 Dr Se with a plug in box

No restrictions on Millage and time or curfews

That's with bell which is part of admiral group

I actually like the idea of the "box" as it allows us/her to analyse her driving and hopefully improve it !!

My first year (at 18 years old) I believe was around £900 with my mum as an insured driver on the policy, this dropped down to around £600 the next year and currently it's at £550ish, my insurance went up when I got employed, I haven't made any claims and have the same spec car you are thinking of (SE model with winter pack) I'm with LV but wouldn't recommend, I highly doubt your daughter will want to modify her car but LV is very limited with making changes, I'll be changing insurers at the end of the year

I am now 19. I insured my Citigo at 18 through Direct Line, and would actively avoid them. They offered me 995 a year with a black box (1125 without), while admiral quoted me 790 with black box.

It's a very insurable car, though, as a young driver.

As above, adding parents as a named driver reduced premium.

Im going to go with direct line, im a few years older but have had a licence for a matter of weeks.   With a black box the price is reasonable on 10k miles coverage,  adding my fiancee who has about 4 years no claims as a second driver dropped the price by about £300 as well

Despite the thoughts of some of my friends I have very few issues with the black box system direct line offer, they cant put your premium up on that contract, they cant pass the details on to the police if you do break the law, no limits on when and where you can drive  and if they do rate you as "bad" this wont show up on any other companies system when you renew as direct line can't make it available.  Basically as long as your a sensible driver I think it sounds like a black box could be great.

Personally I'm not keen on the whole black box idea. But I'm sure it works for some.

There is no right answer for insurance cheapness. All the above can help lower the premium. Postcode is normally the major factor.

I pay with 9 years ncb nearly as much as a lot of younger drivers with zero ncb mainly due to my postcode.

The citigo is insurance friendly and is half as much as the Fiat 500 I had.

Hi,

Feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. We have both Smartbox schemes (Only monitors mileage, so as long as you don't exceed the stated annual mileage there is no increase during the policy) and standard policies too.

If you wanted to PM me your contact details I can arrange a call from our quotes team.

Kind regards,

Dan.

There is nothing wrong with telemetry boxes if you have nothing to hide. They are fitted to all of our buses and monitor idling over revving harsh braking and speeding. I'd rather have than not to prove my innocence;)

Admiral are good.  Got myself (48) wife (50) and daughter no 1 (20) and daughter no 2 (17 on a provisional) for £500 fully comp.  No box, cameras or anything to monitor them.  Thought that was pretty good.

Coincidentally, I just got my renewal letter from Direct Line, and will be going else where.

My initial price (with Black Box) was 995 a year. However, they're now offering me a 30% discount (which is included in my renewal price) for my excellent score on my black box. This now brings my price to 827 (which without the 30% reduction is actually 1200) and is 100 more than my original price (before adding the black box) last year. So despite having my driving at 'excellent' on the black box, and ANOTHER year of no-claims, my insurance has technically gone 'up'. Which is apalling. I'm phoning around other insurance companies to get other quotes as admiral were quoting me more like 670 a year.

Also, just as a side on the black box, I made another thread elsewhere (here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/339726-insurance-rant/ ) that covers it. But basically, when sold the black box insurance I was told unequivocally that I would not be monitored on time of day. I wasn't, for the first 8 months, but then it got added to the black box's information, without being notified of any changes to terms and condition. When I contacted them, the woman told me a series of lies about how it monitored peak times on roads (which was a- a lie and b- not in the original agreement, nonetheless) which was just rubbish, because my score of "average" for time of day on a quiet country road at 11PM could not be related to peak busy times on this road; it was deserted - and also this contradicted their website, which claimed "To avoid bad scores, avoid driving later at night; drive during the day to maximize your score".

I haven't been impressed with Direct Line the last little while, and I will now be leaving them. But your decision is your decision, and regardless, 995 a year was a pretty good price for the black box to be under 12000 miles a year agreement.

(apologies for my incoherent message, I'm a bit tired tonight! :D

Phew lots to digest !

Thanks for replies, it's been a busy couple of days

Picking up wife's new yeti black edition Saturday, test driving the CITIgo in the morning, Citroen C1 is top of list at moment but I'm not over keep as 1 don't like Citroen 2 it's french 3 warranty is poor as is breakdown cover and finally I'm paying so my decision is final and as the CITIgo

1 cheapest deal

2 it's not French

3 everything is included 3 years servicevici, cracking warranty and breakdown cover nice dealers cheap insurance oh and still not French

Ps I don't dislike the French just french cars :)

On the subject of black boxes looks like we are going to go withBell which is part of admiral as they are very competitive and the black box they provide plugs in to cigarette lighter

And you only need to have it in 95% of the time

Excellent. Hope you enjoy the Citigo test drive, and the Yeti Black Edition!

Best of luck with insuring, hope the cost isn't too much! :)

Very interesting post, I appreciate your thoughts on this!

Im getting the car for work and will be doing some unsociable hours, that could well mean a 2am trip from Newcastle to London with 15 mins notice lol so yea black box isnt ideal especially if I go over my estimated miles   but  I have taken the view that if the score isnt great, il just take my (hopefully in place!) no claims bonus and go elsewhere, thankfully the score isnt visible to other companies anyway.  I expected these boxs to put up my monthly premium iof they didn't like the data.  I am fairly sure I will remain a boring "safe" driver so the box doesn't bother me as much as it would most of my friends who drive.

at 23, with a brand new licence and a policy for a 2015 greentech SE with 10k miles (and my Fiancee as a second driver) ive been quote around £650 with a black box, which is pretty decent for a new driver imo

Excellent!

My insurance was £995 with a black box at 18 with 11 months of driving behind me.

My renewal from direct line was £834, and I told them to shove it :D. Swapped to admiral for just over £500 a year. My insurance has halved, which is nice. :)

Hope you enjoy the car when it comes. I'm sure your daughter will; brilliant car for an 18 year old :D

I've been with Direct Line for years and always get this. Go on their website, do another quote as if you're a new customer - it's always lower than the renewal quote that comes through the post. Then phone them up, choose the option to cancel/not renew insurance. Once talking to a real person, tell them the reason for not renewing and - oh, what a surprise  - they can match the online quote. If you've got a competitive quote form Admiral, it's always worth passing that under their nose as well. I've knocked them down quite a bit in the past.

I did exactly this. They were not interested. The guy was a useless jobsworth who claimed "he did not have authority to question what was on the renewal as that was a fixed price". I said, cancel my policy then. When he asked why I explained that I had a quote of nearly £300 less for like-for-like policy, and their staff's attitude was less than impressive.

Highly doubt I'll return to Direct Line again.

Never been impressed with Direct Line. The changed me £25 to email the insurance docs to the dealership for them to tax. Only hard copies are free apparently. Told them I would not renew and haven't been near them since.

Off topic but I have just traded in my Motorcycle as I don't use it often enough. Its a Suzuki VZ800

I pick up a Honda Forza 300 ABS Scooter on Sunday 01 Mar. Still does 90MPH, 74Mpg and with my experience, £74.50 Fully Comp Protected with £150 Excess :)
