Bob's Skoda Octavia vRS

Sold it to a new Briskoda member and went on the hunt for an eco warrior :D

And last night I went to look at a Bora, fell straight in love and brought her home

unfortunatly, one of the previous owners didnt put the handbrake on properly so the car rolled down the drive and caught a wall which scratched the nsf wing and door. the repair is good quality, just a shame the colour doesnt match that well!

other than that, im happy with it.

spec is

2001 (Y reg)

VW Bora SE

Tornado Red . . .and another shade!

1.9 TDi 115bhp

6 speed

Sport interior

Sport alloys wrappped in Unroyal RainSport 3's

HID Conversion, very good beam pattern which passed last mot and doesnt blind other road users so they may have to stay.

It has a tuning box, which Im guessing is an ebay special, unsure of make or spec, it runs well with it but Ive not had any experience with these in the past . . . anybody know if theyre any good or does it need ditching?

And today's progress . . .

. . . . Deristricting air flow and Pipercross panel filter :)

Thats it for now, my plans are . . .

sort out paint colour issues, will try red T-cut and wax otherwise will probably have it blended in at a later date.

Coil overs or just 35mm springs, unsure yet

18" BBS style alloy wheels, RS, LM or CH

Boot lip spoiler

and who knows, may be a remap

I think they look spot on mate, really loving what youve done with the rims

Looks like a good buy. That will need painting to get it right

One of these or a mk4 golf will be next for me. Is it slightly smaller than the octavia.

I would personally be ditching the box and getting a decent map from ##!!##h.  They are not far from you (Manchester area)

You also need to change your car profile. ;)

I'm afraid that won't polish out. :( It's either 2 different paint codes or new paint vs several years of sun bleaching.

interior at the the front is about the same, seems little less in the back and the boit floor is just about as big but abviously without the height.

I thought these were 130bhp. :wonder:

At one time I was looking to buy one myself. Got a drive of my mates dads

company car which was an all red letters version and was pleasantly surprised by the

performance.

However I was also told (can't remember where or by who) that the 150bhp all red TDIs

were less reliable than the 130bhp TDI variant and subsequently the 130 was the pick of the bunch?

I ended up with a lowered 2.0 SE in the end. :giggle:  Gutless but handled well.

I was of the understanding TDI variants of that era were graded like this-

All Chrome TDI = PD100
Red "I" in TDI = PD110
Red "DI" in TDI = PD130
Red "TDI" in TDI = PD150

I think the lower power versions were 105 and 115bhp PD. The older injection pumps were 90 and 110bhp.

The PD115 6-speed was only around for a few months in 2001 before it was superseded by the 130. Both had TDI badge. The 115 was reckoned to be the pick of the bunch as it was quieter and not much slower than the 130 and more reliable than the 150. I gave mine to my son a few months ago. 178,000 miles, original clutch and exhaust, 60 mpg on a run - cracking car.

A lot of people reckon the 130 is the pick of the bunch

Id probably disagree. Back in the day i think it was people reasoning as why they couldnt afford the 150

130 and 150 are exactly the same core engine (camshafts and lobes)

The 150 gets added goodies such as gt1749vb turbo instead of the va and Front mount intercooler

Also you get 150bhp which is nicer than 130bhp obviously

And btw i love tornado red

You do get the added bonus of Chocolate cams in the PD150.

Bora looks good. Nearly bought a black highline myself.

Exact same cam in the 130 im afraid (1 cam - 8v)

Yo actually know that it's the same profile, metal formula and treatments?

Read into a few years back. Part no's are the same between the pd130/150

My pd150 leon made it to 120k mapped when i sold it and it was grand. Never missed a beat

Ok cheers. It still doesn't prove that it wasn't a bad batch of cams and "give a dog a bad name..."

A quick google informs me that all pd cams are exactly the same. Be it the 100/115/130/150

Apparently back in the day in 2002 a bad batch was fitted to mk4 golfs and thats where the bad rep comes from

Exactly my point; if a batch, say, missed tuftriding and they all finished up in PD150s...

tiny update

removed the tuning box, and i must say im dissapointed! ive lost nearly 15mpg and the low end torque has gone! so it was actually doing something, goorld or bad though is the bug question. it took a few days to get used to the power loss but now im ok with it I may just wait for a remap in the future, rather than risking damaging the pump / turbo.

more bad news, suffered a flat tyre already and guess what, its not repairable!

but some good news [emoji1]

ive bagged myself a bargain with some BBS LM reps in need of refurb

the centres are alright, but the rims need some work, I will try and regain the polished rims but if all else fails, I will paint the whole wheel with black base coat followed by thin coat of silver to give shadow chrome effect. this wont take place until the spring though

Tornado red the best colour for a bora.  i had a highly modified one a few years back!   Lovelys cars.

update, more bad news! the knocking ive been hearing is coming from nsf top mount, the osf cv joint is knocking at full lock right turn. the alt belt squeals like mad when turning at low speed so guess the freewheel alternator clutch pully is on its way out and the osf door micro switch is knackerd

but the good news . . .

ive ordered a cruise control stalk and loom kit.

and these ;)

Sorry its been a while, weather not been too great until recently and had grandparents in hospital.

I'll start with the latest. . . fitted the coilies :D

I didnt like the fact the front shocks from fk arent painted, so gave a few layers of primer followed by few coats magic black I had left over from when I did some paint work on the octavia. unfortunatly I didnt take any pics before fitting.

had some issues with removing the drivers side as the driveshaft catches on the subframe so had to bodge a home made spring compressor to remove the shock. replaced top strut mounts and bearings whilst I was at it.

the fronts took much longer than I anticipated but well worth it. it was dark by time I had finished the fronts so did the rears the following day including new bump stops

after a day of driving round local giving it some time to settle i then spent a couple of hours getting the adjustment right. Ive lowered approx 40mm front and 50mm rear.

before . . . with the dog!

I think it looks miles better, its much less 'wollowy' in the bends and much firmer. feel like theres more contact with the road and give a much better feel. also took slack out of the steering.

whilst doing fitting the coilovers ive notice a split drivers CV boot and front rear wishbone bushes have seen better days so ive ordered a drive shaft and set of poly bushes for the front arms. i was gonna have it tracked but gonna drive slow and not very far until ive sorted the CV joint, wishbones and had it tracked.

Ive also made a start on the wheels, filed down one of the wheel lips to get rid of kirbing and gave a quick clean to see what Im dealing with

before

so seems I need to get some assortment of sandpaper from 200 grit working up to 2000 grit before polishing. unsure whether to paint the centre black and sand back the face to bare alloy and polish or just spray silver. think I'll see how I get on with the polishing of the rim first.

got some new 225 40 18's ready to fit once Ive sorted the wheels.

still got cruise control to fit so keep an eye for future updates

The coils are galavanised thats why they aren't painted

Tbh a coat of paint will help because galv coilovers rust over in no time with the road salt

And you say your mpg has dropped after the tuning box was removed, this is because the tuning box is fooling the car and the extra bhp / poke from the extra diesel injected is unmetered and doesnt get calculated into the mpg readout.

probably a totally rubbish explanation. My tuning box on my bmw has added 10mpg to the readout. It hasnt though as i still get the same miles to the tank, just the mpg readout is screwed by the tuning box
