1.8 TSi 4x4 in UK?

Featured Replies

Hi All - first post so be gentle!!

Been looking at the Octy Mk3 Estate 4x4 for some time now and it seems to tick all the boxes I need, save one. I like diesels and the way they drive but from bitter past experience my main driving is not DPF-friendly and although there are all sorts of work arounds I said the next car would have to be petrol. Unfortunately the only Octy 4x4s available new in the UK are diesel.

Leaves me with a question. Does anyone know a way to source a RHD 1.8TSi 4x4 in the UK? Malta has long been a source as it is close(ish), RHD and cars there are fully EU spec. I have made some inquiries but no luck so far, cannot be certain the 1,8TSi is available to them let alone getting it back and dealing with the reduced warranty.

I have imported cars in the distant past, so I dont have a problem with that, you just have to find an outlet with access to an EU type approved RHD production line. I have looked at a few options, the most promising is the upcomming VW Golf Alltrack which is comming with the 1.8TSi, however even though it looks close on paper it doesn't have the room of the Octy and although it is fairly subtle I am not a fan of the off-roader look on an estate. I would also prefer a manual which the Golf isnt

If they did a 4x4 VRS TSi I would buy that

Any thoughts and ideas?

Thanks in advance

I dont have a solution.

But keep looking. Its Worth it if you can find one.

I dont think the 1.8 tsi 4x4 will be available with manual, only dsg... At least i Norway that is..

Does it have to be new? If it has to be a VAG petrol 4x4 Estate then obviously there's the A4 Avant with the 2.0l engine, otherwise a Subaru Legacy or 3 series xDrive?

Had a feeling that might be the case as the configurator on the Czech web site only had it listed with DSG (as far as my limited Czech can make out). Figured if any car was available it would be there.

Are the DSG gearboxes 6 or 7 speed? the Czech configurator listed the 4x4 with 6-speed and the 2wd 7-speed (the VW when it arrives is listed as 7-speed)

Probably will end up with a diesel and factor in a few DPF regen runs and £1200 for an early DPF replacement - but not given up hope yet

Lots of us here have CR DPF diesels and have extremely low annual mileages and a lot of short journeys and have had no DPF issues - had mine two years and just done 8,000 miles in total.

Have a look at the forum subject matters because I cannot recall *any* relating to DPF problems - and I have been here a wee while.

If I were you I would buy the diesel variant in the UK because this will far outweigh any hassles you have from the alternatives.

All the best.

4x4 models always come with a 6-speed wet DSG.

FWD models come with a 7-speed dry DSG except for the 2.0 engines (which come with the 6-speed wet DSGs).

If you wanted a TSI 4x4 DSG would Ireland be your best bet for a RHD import?

VAG don't seem interested in making petrol 4x4s. You're better off looking at a BMW 3 series X-Drive or the new Subaru Outback.

They do make them, they just dont sell them everywhere.

Yeah, I don't think Skoda UK sell anything with 4 wheel drive and a petrol engine anymore.

Its a shame.

But Thats perhaps one of the downsides with beeing a limited marked.

If only you'd follow the rest of Europe and switched to driving on the right side of the road...you wouldn't need specially built vehicles for your market.  :D

Good spot, hadn't thought of that. Had assumed they would get the same restricted range as the UK - wrong!

The 1.8TSi 4x4 can be bought there with all options available in the Czech home market, which makes it even more ridiculous that you cannot get it in the UK as they obviouly do it for a RHD market right next door - go figure!

Having looked at it I think you are right, the price of the 1.8TSi is higher than the diesel mainly because of the DSG I guess, and by enough to cover problems I may have with the diesel. Combined with the hassle of import, loss of warranty probably the diesel is better, and it is a manual which I do prefer.

Dont want to turn it into another DPF thread, but I am a bit wary because have had two DPFs fail early, one older VAG and one Ford even though I tried to look after them. I think VAG have improved their DPFs in recent years and Fords have never been the best (but cheap to replace)

Looked at some of the alternatives but again most are spec for spec more expensive than the Octy and having had BMWs in the past Ive become a bit of a reverse badge snob!

At least if the worst happens there is enough difference in it to most of the alternatives Fingers crossed it will be ok.

Forum posts been really helpful, many thanks

Not had any dpf issues with mine so far, done 42k now, it active regens quite a lot even though I'm on the motorway 70% of the time but I guess that is down to cruising revs being really low. Last car was a 2009 Superb II which only had passive regen and it had a couple of sensor issues over 88k but no actual dpf issues. Father in law however had loads of issues with dpf on his Ford SMax and a work mate also on his Mondeo, so in my experience VAG are better.
