Tail pipe trim / engine concerns

Featured Replies

Evening folks,

I collect my vrs tsi on monday from my local dealership. Been too see it today and pay for it.

Now shes stood since jan, not yet PDI'd. I noticed the rear right chrome tail tip, where it rolls inwards, has a 'weld spot' noticable and not on the other side. This spot has started to corrode as its not stainless. Has anyone else got this in their exhaust or is it just an acceptable manufacture process? Sorry no close up pic as i was more concerned abou the build up of bird poo on the bonnet and drivers door!! :-0

Also turned over for the 1st time in 6 weeks and it spun over like a high speed dry starter noise with a high pitched buzz before settling to idle, usual noise or should i be concerned?

Is there some swirl pot or emission device filling up or something??

Cheers

Ive got the weld spot... Currently hidden by 12 feet of mud from the local roads... Ill probably use autosol in the summer....

Where is the weld?

Right hand pipe, as you look down into it, on the left hand vertical section that is inward rolled, if that makes sense?

My bad. I did take a pic. Zoom in on the right pipe. Its looks like a rusty spot on the vertical inner piece.

If it's a weld then it should be stainless as well, I can't imagine them splurging mild steel filler wire into a stainless component. Could it just be discolouration from the welding process that hasn't been polished out? If so a bit of autosol should see to it

Might be just me being fussy but shows up on a spanking new car. It has just cost me £27.5k

I would be asking them to clean the mark before you pick it up.

If its just a stain/dirt mark it will be easy enough for them to get rid of & they should have no quibbles.

If it is really rusting, then I don't think its unreasonable to ask them to correct/replace the part.

As you say you are paying them 27.5k for it !!

I don't want to appear to be pedantic, but if this is a pic of your your car standing in the same spot for 6 weeks your brake disc is very shiny. I'd have expected it to be covered in rust.

The brake surface looks pretty brown to me...

Same here, that's the hub inner that appears metallic in colour... and yes, as the OP states you need to be looking down into the internal surface of the exhaust shroud to see the weld, its not visible on the outside.

They do have surface rust, bad pic angle

Spoke to skoda today. They want me to be 100% happy with it. They have a spanker tdi in the showroom and will either swap the offending trim off mine or order new bits. Its cosmetic ultimately, so happy days. :-)

I'm under the impression that I saw something similar on mine (but both sides). I'll take a pic tomorrow. I'm not too bothered by it, since I'm planning to spraypaint them black, since I want to avoid the left side being dirty and the right one clean (as mine's a TDI)

Nice Scirocco next to you there :sun:

Join has to go somewhere. I have the welded bit. Cars now nearly 10 months old and alls fine. Only notice it when I wash it. It cleans with normal car soap and cloth.

If it was on both sides and every car, i'd understand. But its seems it isn't the case. It won't hurt skoda to address it. The join could be manufactured out of sight. Yes, i am mr fussy. :-)

Been out in the dark with a torch. Sorry I misinterpreted the post. I was thinking the weld was in the actual trim that completed the full circumference. Mine has spot welds on both sides of both stainless trims, where the black "funnel" bit connects. The welds are painted black to blend in.

Please excuse the state of the car...it's a disgrace

This is how mine looks. Not too impressed, but as I said before I'm thinking about making them black anyways so doesn't matter.. (a bit like this or at least on the inside like this)

The exhaust trim will rust slightly, I don't think I've ever had a car with stainless tailpipes that hasn't. It's kind of like stainless cutlery getting rust spots on in the dishwasher.

Just polished some rust spots of my "tailpipes" this afternoon after washing it, takes 30 seconds so no big deal.

The brown staining on a new pipe is most likely just a but of heat discolouration from the welding process(stainless steel exhausts normally go a yellow to brown colour when exposed to heat) . Autosol will remove it. Mine are now a year old and haven't got any corrosion yet but they could do with a bloody good clean. They shouldn't suffer too badly as unlike a normal stainless exhaust they don't get hot but if you let muck sit on them for months at a time you will get corrosion although it should sand/buff out unlike chrome plated parts

I have just washed my vrs and noticed the same thing. They are not actually attached to the exhaust system but merely trims. They appear to be mild steel wrapped in stainless steel. The rust spots are where the mild and stainless are welded together. Probably be an idea to dab a bit of silver hamerite on the affected areas to preserve the look of the trims. Other paints are available.

Why would you let your new car sit for 6 weeks unless you have only just able to sort out the finance or payment? Barking if it was just to have a 15 on the plate.

I tried to order the car to be delivered as close to march 15 as possible. Unfortunately it was bumped up to build week 50-2014, hence delivery in jan. If it arrived in nov etc i would of had it but for the sake of an extra few weeks i thought i miight as well wait. It was ordered september plus i had a loan vehicle from family so no biggy. The octavia is like a bottle of heinz........ The best things come to those who wait ;-)

Skoda state and they had a warranty guy look at it to say it is part of the manufacturing process, not a fault, a replacement may be no different so it won't be changed. It seems the new diesel vrs in the showroom is the same on both pipes, so its like it or lump it.

Have to say I was of the same mind.

My car arrived early Feb 14, technically I could have waited for a 14 plate (my dealer wad going to accomodate) but the choice of taking the car in the next few days or leaving it there with them in their compound for 3ish weeks....I took the car on a 63. Plates are new for 5 mins now so unless it was convenient I'd personally not bother but each to their own. I know there is an argument a newer plate car might stack up a few hundred quid come sale time but really its a drop in the ocean....its going to drop in value like a bomb going off anyway (mine certainly has haha)
