rattling sound body work

Featured Replies

I am on my third Octavia 4x4. The present one is a Scout 2011. Yesterday I suddenly experienced a rattling metallic sound that seem to be localised just over my head, in fact I thought the roof railing had come loose. Only appear when drive on bumpy road and then quite loud. On rough tarmac it seems to appear as a coarse vibration. Before noise appeared I heard a clunky coarse sound that seem to come from front supension. In fact I got out of the car and checked for loose wheels.I have been all over the car but not able to find the source of this rattle. Any body experinced similar?

I bet that is annoying. Have you checked anti roll bar rubber bushes. Our could it be a loose strut mount under bonnet?

Perhaps pushing on the corners of vehicle when static may help you find source.

What's mileage on the car and have you any other issues like handling changed or strange ?

Could it be a disc backing plate has come adrift. One of mine did that and made a heck of metallic rattly noise.

Thank you for replies. I will take the wheels off tomorrow and check the plates.

The car has only 63 K km. It has been running very well as my previois Skodas also have done. It is a wonder on steep snowy slippery roads.

Snig 71, my technical english is not all that good, could you indicate where in the car I can look for the two sources for rattling that you have indicated?

Thank you for replies. I will take the wheels off tomorrow and check the plates.

You don't need to take the wheels off, just give them a poke with your finger. If they're loose they'll move quite a bit. It's quite obvious. New ones are quite solid and don't move at all.

The roof lining can be removed in a few minutes so whip that out and see if anything is rattling around up there. Between the roof liner and roof there is a lot of space.

It could be the module for the alarm has come loose somehow as that is in the roof lining just behind the front interior light

New effort today trying to locate source of rattle. Plates behind discs are all fixed in the right position. No sound when pushing down corners of the car. Nothing wrong under the bonnet either. I will try to make a sound record and send the soundfile to my local Skoda dealer.

Sunglasses in the holder by the interior mirror ?

The car was diagnosed today with a broken spring in the front supension. This again led to destruction of the top bearing. It will be fixed under warranty tomorrow and hopefulle that will be the end of it. Thank you again for feedback.

Glad you've got to the bottom of it.
