Another Fabia vRS SE dreamer?

Featured Replies

Sorry to hijack this thread... New to fabias. Don't all Vrs's do that then?

The original vRS from 2003 launched with a ludicrously long 6th gear. Even with the car's (relatively) high torque it wasn't much fun trying to accelerate in 6th. so they shortened the 6th gear. So you could usefully use it in the UK on A-roads etc. that happened very early in the car's life. Maybe even before the end of 2003? There are very, very, few long gearbox Fabia vRS's about.

I've been looking at the longer ratio, firstly due to my box being rebuilt, and the fact that I miss the box from my old Seat Sport 03 which had the long ratio. But based on the TDI club, not saying they were 100% correct, but quite a few know a ****e load more than me. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=3370638&postcount=26

This tails off, the excel sheet, at 4500rpm however all things being the same, increment percentage then the next jump on the FSM/FJW would be 183.5? Based off increments of 18.3 and 18.4 each in 6th?

But in dispute to the formula used I remember having my Ibiza in 6th at around the 78mph (speedo) at just under 2k revs, whilst the sheet states 73.4. But this could be down to actual speed and indicated speed difference one would assume? If the figures are correct.

I don't think that spreadsheet is correct. When the change was made, only the 6th gear was changed. So I suspect there is a different combination available to the three posted in the spreadsheet. I'm 99.9% certain it was 38mph/1000rpm in top. I looked at swapping because I was doing huge motorway miles, often in Germany, so the super-long final gear would have helped.

I'm not so sure this is correct, based off other conversations I've had. Jason has changed his box, he may be able to tell you the code, due to the fact that on the 1/4 mile he had to change up which lost him time, from 3rd to 4th wasn't it? The longer ratio enabled him to get over 100mph without the change up and losing time on the gears.

I would love to get this detail hammered down, ratios, as I'm about to give the longer ratios to the gearbox guy. :D

Yawn :)

My old vRS was a Sept 2003 so the one of earliest released cars in the UK.

Gearbox code was FSM.

At 60mph it was doing 1600 rpm in 6th, so 0.0375rpm/mph

5000 rpm would be 187mph :)

Surely a seven year old (at least) engine would blow up if it was pushed to 187mph at 5000revs? Even if it had been completely stripped down and reconditioned.

Would the drive train, cv drives etc etc, be able to withstand that speed even when brand new? You'd have to buy the highest rated tyres you could find too ;)

I know you're only looking at it theoretically, just wondering how an old engine would handle (or not handle) those speeds.

It was the one which shortly after purchase had a blowout and had to be recovered on a trailer, then it mysteriously got hit by a tractor, then it developed some pretty serious mechanical defects and was off the road for some time, then it was repaired but something else went shortly after

But it apparently has bills for £12k worth of bits

I'm not sure that bills for the same bits over and over because it keeps breaking count. ;)

£12k of just oil, tyres and diesel receipts :P

If he's been doing plenty 4.8 second 0-60 starts he'll have plenty of diesel receipts too!

Mines got the long box in it and theres no chance of me getting into 6th at 60, it would just judder too much.  Mine doesn't have 6th till above 70mph and at 70 the rpms are 1800 which is rubbish as it does not like accelerating then haha. I don't usually change gear until about 3k because the revs drop do much it judders.  Id much prefer a short box like my mates all have.
