MOT Fail

Featured Replies

My 2007 Mazda 3 Mps has failed its MOT and needs approximately 6k worth of work doing on that I cannot afford. My question is what do I do now? I'm in no major rush as I've got a new lease vehicle. What are my options, scrap, sell for parts or sell as a whole vehicle but making sure the buyer is aware of its history.

Any advice is appreciated.

how come it needs all that work on it I presume the engine is still ok but undernieth its a focus and at 2007 surely there is no rust issues . Suspension, brakes and consumerables sounds hard to believe . Are you you sure it is not the garage trying it on for extra work .

If quoting £6000 is to get extra work it's like Ivanovic trying to win a penalty for Chelsea........over-egging the pudding somewhat

Get it MoT'd at a Council MoT Test Centre, where they have no interest in generating repair work.

Surely on a 2007 car that would almost make it a write-off

what's up with it? I might be interested as my mate is a mazda tech, would make a good track toy.

Yes,

please post the list what it failed on.

and what they are pricing up on, parts and labour.

£6000 to get an 8 year old decent car through an MOT? You have either bought a shed and not cared for it or the garage are taking the actual **** out of you?

Had the wifes car serviced at the VW dealer it was shortly due the first mot at 3 yrs old and they came up with over £800's worth of work needed to pass. Took it to a garage I trust with the service report and they found an exhaust bracket needed tacking on, they charged me £10 , VW had quoted £400 for a new exhaust none of the other faults VW reported existed

Right to cut a very long story short, the mps I bought basically turned out to be a steaming pile of you know what. It does require 6k of work, I'm not making this up. I've had to live with the stress and annoyance of this happening to me. I'm going to county court again next month to try and get the money back but after my first court visit I fear the worst, so I'm trying to do some planning for it.

The 6k includes a lot of body work including chassis work, it also needs various mechanical items repairing.

I was just hoping for some advice. Cars done 40k. Do I scrap it, try and sell it whole but with the buyer aware or sell it for parts.

Just out of intetest what is book price secondhand value for the car at that age and mileage......that might be a good starting point

Can you say what you mean with the Body Work.

Was the car previously damaged in an accident and been repaired?

Is it corrosion (rust) so needs welding underneath?

Was it MOT'd when you bought it, and was that a genuine MOT or something the seller had through contacts?

Was it 12 months ago or so it was MOT'd.

It seems you need to part it,  then scrap what is left unless someone is going to buy it complete.

But there must be some story on its recent past.

?

Who sold you it?

Who has MOT'd it now & failed it and what are the mechanical failures?

These are the Fails;

Front brakes imbalance across axel

Offside headlamp aim too low

Near front vehicle structure has an inadequate repair

Offside rear shock absorber has a fluid leak

Near side front anti roll bar linkage ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated

Near side front steering system has a tyre fouling a part of the vehicle

It was sold with a six month old MOT, that was done at a local garage. I had it done with Mazda after I purchased it, stupid I know and I accept that's my fault. I personally believe it's been crashed and bodged back together and sold

Yes it probably has sustained accident damage and was bodged.

so is this the Mazda Main Dealer quoting repairs.

because a Tradeperson working on it for 40 hours and buying parts and making a profit is never going to be £6000.

& if it was to,

then the Court Case with a proper professional Motor Engineers report so make things rather simple.

EDIT,

For your safety and others it needed Testing Again,

sounds like a death trap.

Is Trading Standards involved, ?

& maybe VOSA to check on the MOT to see if the work was pre or after the MOT.

?

Who sold you the car,

who are you taking to court, is it a Private Seller ??

Edited by goneoffSKi

I would do a full HPI check on the car this will go someway to giving you infomation if the car has been in an accident

  • Author

Yeah private seller, just keeps saying it was sold as seen. Full hpi check has been done came back with no issues.

Hpi won't show up anything if they haven't gone through insurance, which if it's been bodged it won't have.

If a Private Seller then that is you pretty stuffed if sold as seen.

If the MOT 6 months before is legit,  and he is not actually Trading while pretending to be a Private seller,

it was down to the buyer to check everything over, maybe get a MOT carried out right away or at least the car checked properly.

If there was any false advertising, then the court might treat things differently.

Yeah, that's what my understanding of this type of thing is. Think it'll be going on eBay as an MOT failure

PM me if you want to sell.

Yeah private seller, just keeps saying it was sold as seen. Full hpi check has been done came back with no issues.

So unless he got a mate to give an MoT, or forged one, it's suddenly failed 6 months due to a serious lack of repair,,,,,,something's very fishy - I'd be tempted to check out that the original MoT is legit, and, if so, how they managed to miss such a glaringly obvious defect

If it was in an Accident after the MOT, sold to who you bought for spares or repairs etc is all rather important.

Its really down to what you have found out since you bought the car.

?

How long have you owned it now, how many miles covered in your ownership,

and did you do any work on it or have maintenance and servicing done since buying it?

Even if its a private sale, isn't it a criminal offence to sell an unroadworthy car?

If your planning to take it to court, I would keep car for evidence or any inspection required.

It's a criminal offence to sell an unroadworthy car this is correct, however because it's a county court case this matter cannot be dealt with at county court.

Vehicle was purchased April 2014, covered around 200 miles in it. No work has been done with it since I've owned it.
