just gave the sport an Italian tune up and wow

Featured Replies

Was sorting out the MIL polo at the dealers the other day and got to drive a new 60hp 1.0l polo. I wondered how the engine went in the polo compared to the citigo so decided to give it some stick. The first thing I noticed was that the polo had a red line of 6500rpm and it pulled all the way there. My citigo has always seemed to run out of steam at 5000rpm.

So when I got in the citigo I decided to give it an old fashioned Italian tune and you know what, it now drives way better! It pulls nicely from about 2500rpm, strongly from 3000rpm and will now pull to the red line at 6500 where in the past it would barely pull to 6000.

So if your car is feeling at bit sluggish give it a bit of stick!!

I've been driving it like that since it was run in; the car seems to love it and makes a great sound whilst doing it. Also, I love the expression "Italian tune up"!

Oh yes [emoji106]

Mines exercised regularly [emoji6]

Mine is regularly tuned now!

What I would also say with the polo the engine is really quiet and refined, the gear ratios are really low 5th is lower than 4th on the citigo but you still get good economy!

Isn't the Polo a 1.0tsi ? Or is that just a rumour that was going around?

That's correct, the citigo engine looks tiny in that engine bay!

I know on the fabia forum there was grumbling about the 1.0mpi taking over from the 1.2htp but the 1.0 is way quieter, cheaper to tax, way smoother and just as good on fuel despite the low gearing. It's also quicker against the clock too.

The downside is that it's not quite as torquey and the power comes in higher up the rev range.

I take it the Polo has much better engine soundproofing then as my Mii sounds like it's got a blown exhaust when accelerating, almost like an old WWII propeller aircraft :)

Part of the charm isn't it?!

Its a feature.

Yeah, the polo has pretty good insulation under the bonnet.

It will be the ECU learning from your last drive. Last track day I did in my old VRS it felt so alive after that, till I went back to my fuel saving driving.

Good point Mike my old golf gti was like that, it always seemed to boost harder after I'd ragged it for a bit.

Mind, it could also be like the early ford Zetecs where if they didn't get revved the cylinder head gummed up and the engine become sluggish and an Italian tune up cured it.

I love that raw sound of the 3 pot when you're strangling it [emoji16]

I like it too, but I rather listen radio in long term. At the same time I enjoy low end "torque". ;)

any time i borrow the wife's Citigo i rev the nuts off the little 60bhp 3 pot. it loves it, and surprises many's another car pulling away off roundabouts...

those driving bigger german saloons thinking they'll just keep driving out in front of me regularily end up planting their anchors when realise i aint doing 1mph in my little car!

Best sounding little car engine out there IMHO. Maybe only beaten by the twin air unit in the fart 500......but that's crap on fuel!!

Used to like the sound of the Suzuki 3 pot engines [emoji4]

Fixed; omitted the last two words for you just to make it more accurate. #controversial

I had no problem blowing away a VW Up! the other day, same car isn't it.

I don't race though and I think an old fart was at the wheel of the Up!

I'm an old fart as well :p

I'm an old fart as well :p

I think there's a few of the 'older generation(s)' now driving Citigos, and there is a few on this forum.

I'm probably also a more mature owner.......not old but I do fart, guess that counts.
