Noise reduction in the Citigo

Featured Replies

I drove Mrs T's Fabia vRS at the weekend and was surprised that it seemed noisier than my Citigo. I know that the Fabia is not the last word in refinement and this was not a scientific test but this still surprised me. So I thought I would post up the noise reduction work I have done and see where we go from there.

1. Vibration absorbing sheets in the boot and spare wheel well. This is the heavy silver stuff that you only need to cover approx 25% of the surface area with to be effective.

2. Sounds insulating sheets in the boot and spare wheel well.

3. A sound insulation mat on top of the spare wheel.

4. A rubber boot liner.

5. Carpet on the rear wheel arches in the boot.

6. Variable boot floor.

This still to do:

7. Rear wheel arch liners.

8. Vibration absorbing sheets under rear seats.

9. Sounds insulating sheets under rear seats.

That is the easy stuff, after that you need to start stripping out trim that I am reluctant to do. Other top sound reducing tips would be appreciated.

Noise reduction. After all that you'll need weight reduction [emoji6]

I heard Earplugs were cheap and effective!

I've been on a diet since Burns Night and have lost nearly a stone, should more than offset it.

I do have the spare wheel and tool kit though for even more weight.

But you can't hear the stereo.

You got a link to the sound insulation? I was a little disturbed by the noise from my test drive, my car will have the variable floor so wonder if this will make improvement? Will defo be looking at quieten it down though, I don't think I will bother with the arch liners though

What about insulation that clips onto the bottom of the bonnet. Its fitted to the new polo, maybe that cut be cut to fit??

That and other under bonnet insulation certainly quietens down the 1.0l engine in the polo.

I think il just turn the radio up lol

I've added the spare wheel and boot liner and lay the original bit of carpet on top which seems to have helped, best solution seems to retrofit rear wheel arch liners. Very interested in the possibility of putting soundproofing into the engine bay but would rather wait until a part specially available.

Just ebay search car sound insulation and you get a bunch of the stuff.

I think Dynamat is a good make.

I agree but I believe it is somewhat pricey, although I expect you get what you pay for.

It is a bit. Not sure if it's fire proof so possibly can't use it under bonnet?

I haven't put anything under the bonnet, I don't see it as a priority. I would do the bulkhead before the bonnet but really can't be bothered with all the hassle.

Why would you sound proof the engine bay? Then you can't hear the little 3-pots grunt :x

I definitely wouldn't do it [emoji4]

I don't find the sound that noisy, but will be interested in hearing the outcome of all the sound deadening

from my one drive in a citigo I found the noise seem to come from the back, almost like a back window was slightly open. Will have to see what it's like to live with when mine turns up, I quite like the idea of throwing down some sound insulation in the boot and under the rear seats.

Agree, some tweaks necessary, especially at rear:

Ordered the following for my (well.. wifes..) new Citigo. Will post result:

VW E-Up inner mudguards rear AND front; they both include glued-on sound absorbers on the inside (dry side)

Skoda Citigo bootmat and side carpet-pieces (see other post)

A few sheets Dynamat and a pack Henkel Teroson soundabsorbing selfadhesive mat - the version with non-flat top surface; absorbs better (both mat-types heat/fire-approved for engine hood use)

As other Briskodians, I will avoid to further insulate doors etc, the above will suffice for this daily commuter. (Actually the car is not too bad concerning vibration damping from start compared to some cheaper car competitors. Nice sound when shutting doors for example!)

Noise.....what noise? I can't hear anything.

Seriously for a small car it's not bad at all, even on the motorway it's acceptable and not a Turing noise.

Maybe I'm just used to noisey diesels and sent too many years doing big mileage on the motorway with background noise and now I accept the level?

Fabias are not that noisy for a small car but the 16" Bridgestone Turansa's on mine I know are the culprit. As soon as they wear I'll be looking for a quieter tyre.

Not having driven the Citigo I can't compare but even with additional soundproofing the tyres can be an issue so worth checking.

Love the looks of the Citigo and reports from a few friends and neighbours who have them
