Two weeks of ownership and back to the dealer

Featured Replies

OK, not the same vehicle but similar problem. A tinkling noise with car set over at 10 degree angle, engine running and clutch out. Push clutch in and tinkle gone. Rather than drive it I called Skoda Assist who attended and confirmed the noise. SA called my local dealer to report who said bring it in. Drove car to dealer, which SA following, reported fault to Service who retained the car for inspection. Having retained the car for almost 3 days they phoned and said they could find no faults. I went to collect it, drove it home, immediately experienced the same symptoms, recorded it and took pictures, returned to service and showed evidence. Again they retained the car for another 3 days at the end of which they diagnosed a clutch problem...5500 miles. During the 3 days they had fitted a new clutch and touch wood no more tinkling.

The rest of the story is just laughable and not something I should write on here about.

Early life DMF failure perhaps, not unheard of and not something that affects just Skodas

  • Sounds like a faulty input shaft/ bearing, by pushing down the clutch you disengage the drive to the box.

Thanks for the reply, it is appreciated but i could do with a definitive answer as to if the sound insulation differs accross the trim levels, someone on here must surely know one way or the other??

No it doesnt...an SE would be no differently insulated to any other model....unless of course they have failed to fit something when it was built? Unlikely but stranger things have happened.

There has been talk though that some markets where roads are notoriously bad not only get the rough road package (optional on UK 4x4's only) regardless of being 2wd or 4wd but also additional sound deadening...I assume to suppress road noise to acceptable levels. Not sure its ever been factually confirmed however.

Slightly related, when I was looking at buying the Yeti in 2012, I'm sure that lesser models didn't have any soundproofing under the bonnet

I didn't think the VRS was a lesser model, but that doesn't come with the under bonnet insulation.

£25k motor car and a further £25 from Skodaparts.com for under bonnet insulation!!

Isn't it just a TSi/TDi thing - the oil burners get it, the petrols don't?

Both my oil burner O3's have had under bonnet sound insulation

Is it worth my while speaking to Skoda finance as the car is on a PCP deal ??

Yes you must speak to VW finance, the car belongs to them and under the supply of goods act they have to provide a car of serviceable quality.

Have you considered getting an independent inspection of the car, if they confirm there is an issue you have evidence of the fault to go to the finance company with - if found faulty the cost can be reclaimed from VW finance.

Going back to the gearbox chat, my 5 speed now has a loud rattle in 5th gear only.  It's been there for quite a few miles but I reckon it's getting worse.  Very noticable with the windows open and at low revs, such as cruising in 5th at 40mph.  Mine's done 36k miles now.

My SE definately has sound insulation under the bonnet.

Having a drive of a 1.6 TDi for 24 hrs to compare how it sounds to mine. If it sounds different, ie better, then i think i will be looking at an independent report and contacting finance.

Skoda UK told me that an independent inspection report would not be recognised by them. lol. Only their own technicians views and reports are valid apparently.

I did suggest that this may not be the case in a court of law, regardless of what SUK say.

Maybe it is just road noise or something that i have become hypersensitive to, hence driving another one. The one i have on a 24 hr drive is an elegance though so it has different wheels and tyres. :-( SUK told me there are no 1.6TDI SE anywhere in the UK for me to have a drive of. That sort of statement just makes me more suspicious tbh.

Having had another vehicle kindly loaned by a different dealer i am still undecided as to mine sounding right or not. :-(

May well take it to an independent vag specialist and also another Skoda dealer for their opinions.

If someone in the Wiltshire area has a vehicle of the same spec as mine i would be most interested to hear from you.

Newer cars (maybe even 2012 to 2015, as in your case) keep having thinner gearbox lubricants specified model-on-model to reduce losses (and hence reduce emissions) - this increases the transmission (excuse the pun, not intentional) of any noises out of the gearbox.  See how many posts there are on noisy gearboxes on the Citigo forum!  Then, it comes down to which side of the tolerance bands for components your particular gearbox(es) are at.  Some are noisy, some quiet.

It might not be the answer you're after, I'm afraid.

Sometimes my wife is right - turn the radio up a notch... :D

Another call from SUK today to see how my 24 hr test drive went.

Told them that it did not sound the same as my vehicle and re-iterated that the one i test before purchasing mine at Blades also did not sound like mine.

Suggested that i may speak to Skoda finance and my manager said they can't do anything. I did point out that technically the car is theirs so they have a responsibility to ensure it is of satisfactory quality.

My case manager is going to speak to his "executive" and get back to me tomorrow. I assume this means his boss????

I am considering getting a second opinion from another Skoda dealership, will be strange if they suspect something at fault with the vehicle but the dealer who supplied it doesn't, what would SUK have to say then i wonder.

Also going to look into an AA/RAC vehicle report.

I think u are looking for problems

If all your skodas are suffering gearbox issues then stop buying skodas

Hmmmm. Yes. I love nothing better than spending my hard earned money on something then looking for further problems to waste my time and money on.

Also where have I stated that all of my Skodas have had gearbox issues?

Get them to check the gearbox oil level.

Issues occur if the oil level is at minimum or below which can happen on pre fill

It's on its second gearbox in three months.

Can anyone please supply the details of where or whom i should be writing to at Skoda Finance with this  grievance?

Many thanks

It will be on the finance agreement paperwork.

Contacted VWFS today. They are now opening a case and will be investigating further.

I also emailed the managing director of Skoda UK. I received a call today from someone whom had had my email passed on to them from the MD.

I won't go into what was said too much on here.....yet. However the guy who called me was very apologetic and assured me he is endeavouring to find a solution which i will be happy with.

He is contacting the retailer and should be getting back to me by the end of the week. It all sounded quite promising but i am not counting my chickens yet.

Will keep you posted.

Another highly promising call today. It looks as though i will be getting a replacement vehicle, however it will be a factory build.

I didn't get chance to go through all the details with the guy from Skoda so i have a query for anyone who has had a vehicle replaced whilst on the PCP scheme.

What happens with your current scheme? Is it just a case of swapping the details on the agreement? Or will it be a whole new agreement and term?

Regarding the warranty, will the new vehicle have the full 3 years warranty or will it be less what i have had on this one? i suspect full three years but just want to be sure.

Also will my service plan which i paid £150 for the three years be transferred to the new vehicle?

Many thanks in advance for your replies. It looks like there maybe light at the end of the tunnel. Well 8-12 weeks away anyway.

You will have to ask Skoda Exec complaints all of those questions, as different people get different outcomes depending on the issue, how far in to their agreement they are etc.

Anything anyone tells you on here will either be speculation, or not 100% applicable as their case is not 100% identical to yours.

You are getting a new car, so should get a new warranty. The servicing and PCP are on a case by case basis normally.

No worries. I have had my queries answered by skoda and also the retailer. Thanks again.

  • 4 weeks later...

just an update to say i have now taken delivery of a replacement Octavia. And all appears to be good with this one (so far) lol.

Have to say a big thanks to the person who eventually got this issue sorted out for me, a Mr Ian Watson.

My faith in the brand is restored. Thanks for all of the tips and advice i received on here and also via some PM's.
