Two weeks of ownership and back to the dealer

Featured Replies

After just two weeks and 400 miles i have my first issue. lol

I have a definate whine at 50-55mph. To me it sounds like its coming from the rear/ns of the vehicle. Thought it may have been tyre noise and checked tyre pressures, they were a little high so have corrected them but to no avail.

Similar noise to when you drive on one of those horrible concrete surfaced roads.

Its off back to the dealers next week (Blades, Gloucester) for them to have a listen.

I did make a video and the sound can be heard faintly on it. Will try recording a sound clip and posting it here.

Not happy at the moment though. :-(

Really sorry to hear that, heres to hoping its fixed PDQ to your satisfaction, and that they throw a bottle of wine and a few bucks worth of petrol your way.

I can't see either of those things happening based on my own previous experiences and others on here. Hopefully I will be proved wrong.

Chin up,sir ! Fingers crossed for you.Its never a nice experience with a brand new car for it to be hospitalised at such an early stage. In view of this,I would be asking for [at the very least ! ] a free and comprehensive health check on the rest of the vehicle as a show of reassurance from the dealer.

Managed to get a sound recording.

Listen to the end as it is more noticable. Any suggestions as to what it could be would be greatly appreciated.

There was a post here some weeks ago about a noise that couldnt be identified. Someone sugested the rear tyres were starting to block making a noise like a worn bearing or a diff whining.

It does remind me of some sort of tyre noise. The dealer should surely be able to bung a different set of wheels and tyres on to verify if they were the problem though.

Re the Rather High Tyre Pressures,  How high was High?

And what did the Workshop Manager say about the Technician or fitter that did the PDI & checked and set the Pressures.?

Did they first of all check the torque of the Wheel Bolts to see how they were checked at the PDI?

The car is running in and the tyres are still green because 400 miles really is no distance.

Brake Discs and Pads are still new, things are tight, and the drive train really needs a sympathetic start in life.

Hopefully a Master Tech will pick up on any fault, and talk to the people doing PDI's about letting new Owners know via the

Salesperson doing the hand over if they are setting tyre pressures high.

First check with a new car or even taking a Test Drive, Courtesy car / Hire car should be check and set your tyre pressures & TPMS,

because people that are supposed to be professionals seem to not quite understand the safety or danger of being careless with simple things.

The tyre pressures were maybe 5-8 psi higher than the norm all around. Not spoken to the workshop manager yet. Regarding things having to be run in, I do see your point and I wondered this myself. But never had anything like this with any other vehicle new or old. Although my Mk2 Octy did have an issue with its gearbox a couple of weeks into ownership from new.

I had something similar that went away after switching to summer tires (it was delivered new on winter tires chosen by the lease company).

It is called saw-toothing

Id have thought 8 psi was a pretty high percentage to be high by and possible would cause wearing and noise but after only 400 miles?

I was thinking about swapping the wheels and tyres around to see if it made a difference to how it sounded. But then I reckon the dealer should be doing this sort of thing when I take it in next week. And I certainly don't see why I should have to shell out on a new set of tyres to cure the issue.

If the tyres are saw-toothing enough to make a noise it is usually easy to see on the tyres, but you normally get it on the front first. Couple of cars have really bad problems with this and I had one. Not heard of it being a Skoda problem though

Wouldn't be the first time a duff bearing has been fitted from new, but again that should be an easy spot when you spin the wheel up on a ramp

It's back at the dealers tomorrow but the more I drove the car the less convinced I am that it is a tyre issue.

Good luck. It's probably just a minor issue and will hopefully be resolved easily, it's a pity These things occur so hopefully you will see some goodwill from skoda and surely if the frequency of goodwill offers increases in light of car issues then some bean counter at VAG will take notice and improve quality.

ISO/BS/6 SIGMA etc all sound very corporate and professional in the industry but IMHO they are merely corporate marketing tools and have no substance.

Anyway, hope you get sorted and your dealer can prove their worth in keeping you happy.

Been back to Blades, Gloucester today. Technician came for a drive in the car with me. He said he heard the noise but only slightly and briefly on a nice smooth bit of tarmac. They have done a full health check on the car and also swapped the wheels around. And low and behold...........................No difference. Lol. They did say I should maybe give it a couple of thousand miles with it being new in case it's something bedding in. But disappointed to say the least. This is the second brand new octavia is have had and the last one had an early issue which required Skoda UK's assistance with getting sorted. Going on a 200 mile trip back to Yorkshire for easter so will see what it is like after such a long run.

One thing I've found with my 1.6 diesel with 5 speed box is that the box can be noisy.  At certain gears and certain road speeds it can whine.  Its most obvious in mine in 4th gear.

Mine does it in 4th and 5th. Between 50 and 55mph.

Just an update to anyone who may be interested. My car is still making this noise. I have noticed that when the noise occurs if you push the clutch pedal in, the noise stops. Have explained this to the dealers and it's going back next week, again. Not happy at all at the moment. Hopefully will get somewhere this time. If not I can feel a call to Skoda Uk coming on.

Sounds as if you have my old vauxhall cavalier gearbox. This became noisy over time (whining noise) when driving. Depress the clutch pedal and noise disappeared.

Transpired to be a faulty shaft bearing on the gearbox. Cost a fair bit to sort.

Sounds like a faulty input shaft/ bearing, by pushing down the clutch you disengage the drive to the box.

Just call skoda UK and have a moan anyway. That's what they there for, it's therapeutic :-))

or the thrust bearing when spinning free, pressing on the pedal pushes it against the pressure plate and it quietens,

**** happens im afraid. The Octavia is still quite a new car and there are occasional build/component issues....the phrase "they dont build them like they used to" is somewhat true here too...but they are on the most part not built badly.

Ive had very little trouble with mine, its relatively early (Feb 14) and has done nearly 23k hard miles in a smidge over a year with little complaint.

Give the dealer a few chances to fix.....if they fail miserably then you can attempt to reject.
