Tablets

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

I'm looking to buy a cheap tablet in the next month or so £150 max.

I mainly use my iPhone but staring at the small screen keeps giving me eye strain and headaches and as I can't be bothered to keep getting the Laptop out each time I want to check on here I suggested to SWMBO that it may be best to buy a Tablet.

Ok so, never owned one, never used one. Live in the middle of nowhere so not so easy to go to a shop and play with one.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've looked (Internet) at a new hudl, and obviously there is the iPad which unless I find a decent used one is probably out of my price range.

It would never leave the house so 3/4G isn't important as it'll only be used via wi-fi.

Just want something that's easy to use for browsing and video. Maybe the occasional game.

What do people have/recommend baring in mind the budget and the fact that requirements are low.

  • I'm a big fan of the iPad, but anything at your budget will be quite dated. That leaves you with either Android or Windows to choose from, and you also need to decide whether you want full size 10"

  • Do not get Samsung galaxy tab 3. Biggest load of ****e ive ever bought

  • The Hudl 2 is the best "small" tablet at that price.

If you can stretch to iPad go for it I'm on my second everything the same as the iPhone with plenty of apps, great for watching tv,films etc,if you don't want to spend too much the hudl is ok but smaller.

Yeah id like the iPad as I've had iphone since they started and it would be easy to use and already having an iTunes account etc. but it's nearly double my budget which I can't justify atm as I've just spent loads decorating house and want a Columbus for the car (SWMBO starting to go mad at current spending and expected spending)

Was just looking at the Lenovo ones and Kindle Fire HD in Argos as they have some offers on atm. I have a Kindle Keyboard which I ise for reading and my mum has a Fire which she says is great but with her being 90 mile away it's not so easy to go have a play. Lol

Get one and tell her it's for her, that's why I had to get another one SWMBO was and is on it all the time.

That leaves you with either Android or Windows to choose from, and you also need to decide whether you want full size 10" screens or a smaller 7 or 8 inch like the Hudl 2. The deals available change very frequently, so have a look on Hot UK Deals to see what bargains are around.

Yeah was just watching a you tube vid on the 7" kindle fire HD which doesn't seem too bad and comes in just under £100. Gonna have a watch and do some research on others but generally you tube videos tend to brag on how good the item is as opposed to genuine owner reviews on how they are to live with.

another vote for the Hudl 2, got SWMBO one for Christmas and she's very happy with it. The specs for the price are very good.

The Hudl 2 is the best "small" tablet at that price.

If you like your iPhone they you'll probably be best to stick within the Apple family and get an iPad.

Most tablet rely on your having accounts with their manufacturers,It'll save a lot of hassle to stick within the same group as your phone.

If it's definitely out of budget then the Hudl 2 is supposedly very good value for money.

I picked up a refurb Amazon 7" Fire tablet for £60 the other week and it's actually very good but suits me because I already subscribe to the Prime video.

yeah, I did a few searches for the reviews and it came out pretty well.

swmbo and daughters have iPads and they are great but expensive.

I have a Nexus 10 but see there are smaller Nexus pads around in your budget, the 7 and 5", they are Android so nice open platform great for dragging and dropping etc unlike Apple.

Mine is very good but every now and then has a moment and shuts down whereas all the iPads have been totally 100% reliable.

Friend got a Hudl and took it back had no end of troubles, not sure what, ended up with Samsung tab and is very happy.

I dont like Apple but....

Although current generation iPads are stupidly over-priced, you can buy previous generation models brand new for a big discount; the further back you go, the cheaper they get. I have seen original iPads advertised for £99 and 1st Gen iPad mini for £150 - if only I could remember exactly where.......

For non Apple, and at or under £150, the Asus Memopad is very good - and sturdy - I have dropped my onto tarmac edge on, and it survived with only a tiny scratch to the casing. I am really tall, so say a 4 ft drop??

Don't get a first generation iPad as the iOS can't be updated and get at least 32gb because updates can be quite big.

The screen on the iPad 2 (and original mini) is poor, and although the iPad 3 has the better screen it runs slowly on iOS 8.

You'd need to go for at least an iPad 4 to get something that runs well.

Ok so I'm narrowed down a little further to Kindle fire HD 7 (already have a Amazon account for Kindle Keyboard), hudl2 and Nexus.

Has anyone tried the ASUS or Lenovo ones?

Just watched a review on the hudl2 and it seems ok but also seems like it takes a age to start up.

Who turns a tablet off? I wouldn't worry about start up times.

Nexus 7 32gb 2013 model. Cracking tablet.

The hudl2 I had ago of was amazing if I'm honest. Far better than any cheap generic tablet you see knocking about ebay.

The screen was by far the best I've seen on any thing less than a galaxy tab.

Asus memo pad is a good buy, and has sd card slot. Otherwise an Amazon fire HD or Hudl 2.

I have an iPhone and use a Hudl 2 for my tablet duties.

Although it has a lot of Tesco branding, if you change the launcher 99% of the branding is lost. I cannot fault it, I've had it since it first came out and the latest software update fixed the issues it had and added the ability to move apps to SD card.

Screen is great, battery life is ok but not brilliant. I just use it in the evening for browsing and playing the odd game, and then stick it on the charger overnight.

Rumour has it that Android Lollipop should be available for it soon, but I'll most likely stick with kitkat.

Hudl2 can be rooted if thats your thing, but it is not possible to load a custom ROM due to the way the OS has been implemented.

Got my son an Asus Memo Pad 7" for Christmas and it seems pretty good for under £100.

Got a case on eBay for £5 which puts it into standby or acts as a stand.

If you can get on with Android OS then I'd recommend it for the price.

have a look at pipo M9  there are numerous models in your price range with very good display SD expansion and quad processors
