  • I'm a big fan of the iPad, but anything at your budget will be quite dated. That leaves you with either Android or Windows to choose from, and you also need to decide whether you want full size 10"

  • Do not get Samsung galaxy tab 3. Biggest load of ****e ive ever bought

  • The Hudl 2 is the best "small" tablet at that price.

OK I've gone and done it. SWMBO gave me the cash and told me to just go get one. Playing with it now. Seems good so far. Typing isn't as fast as the iPhone but that could just be me getting used to it. Overall, I'm pretty impressed. Definitely worth the £99 I just paid for it.

Cool I've noticed there's a fair bit of tesco stuff on there. Tbh we shop at tesco so will keep some of it but need to clean up blinkbox and some other bits. Just got rid of gmail as I have yahoo account.

You can choose what you put back on the desktop. It doesn't delete the apps - Just gives you more flexibility is all.

So basically you run that as a new homepage with less clutter?

Is it worth running anti virus software on it like AVG?

One thing to consider on an android tablet or phone if you dislike the main screen is to use a launcher such as thejames posted

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&hl=en_GB

^^^That is a must. Gets rid of all the Tesco rubbish. Seems quicker too with lots of customisability.

First thing to happen on my new tablet as I didn't like the Samsung launcher (which forced the Magazine UX and a few other things on you). New launcher installed and it felt brilliant.

Uninstall or disable a few other things and the tablet is the way it should be.

Yeah kinda hate having the "T" at the top and the tesco ads to the left of the home screen.

Don't you just go through the Tesco et-al apps in Settings and either uninstall them or disable them - stops em running / appearing / cluttering and doesn't involve a new app or launcher???

As for anti-virus I have Lookout installed on al our Android stuff.

You'll also probbaly need App Cache Cleaner at some stage...

There are lots of benefits. Through it I switched off any form of security and run the Daydream setting. Essentially a screensaver with the clock on it. Means I can "unlock" the screen by touching the display rather than hitting the power button. Mine is wall-mounted so this is ideal for me. Add a Sonos widget and voila: a massively over-the-top ridiculously overthought Sonos remote solution!

Quite often they'll block you from uninstalling their own apps.

It's one of the things I really don't like with Android devices. I wouldn't use half of the crap that is pushed on them by Google / Samsung et al.

Quite a few AVs for 'Droid on the store. Stick with one you know the name of. I've used AVG and currently have Sophos installed. They're not the same as PC antivirus and are  checking for rogue apps

Yep - same here which is why if I can't uninstall I disable.  I'm not overly keen on the idea of adding another app taking up storage to allow me to switch stuff off when I can uninstall all updates, clear data and reduce the sizes to a minimum and then disable stuff - but them maybe that's just me and I should try it!

It's probably the same reason I've gone away from Chrome explorer recently - it went through a stage of almost doubling in size at each update and bloating itself to ridiculous levels so I switched to Opera that stays pretty much the same size when it updates.

Great site thanks. Although I used apex launcher as I've used it before I've followed his list of bloatware and disabled them all. Glad to be rid of lots of the tesco stuff. Just wish the keyboard could keep up with my typing and that I'd stop hitting b instead of space lol.

Is there a way to get the keyboard to have a .co.UK button instead of a .com?

OK I have to admit you guys steered me straight on this one. Hudl 2 is great and just what I needed. Having had it for a week or so only downside has to be the battery life but its not so bad that I can't live with it.

One question, I've looked around but either its not possible or I can't find the right answer. On my iPhone there is a handy trick in that if you are using the browser you can touch the top of the screen just by where the time is and the page will automatically scroll to the top of the page. Is there a function to do this or something similar on the hudl when using chrome? I have looked but can't find an answer. I know you can just keep swiping upwards and this is what I've been doing, however, would have been a very nice touch and less hassle that repeatedly swiping up

There is a tool for rapidly traversing a list/screen. You'd swipe up/down near the right margin. Not all apps/ windows support it though.

Yeah its mainly when using google chrome or browsers that I'd like it. Using google chrome on here at the moment and can't seem to work out how to do it. If I touch the right side of the screen I see a slider but it doesn't do anything

I too have gone for the Hudl2 as I was sick and tired of the Nexus 7 and it's slow start up and constant trying to update apps which it couldn't.  I have found the Hudl2 to be far better and so far only one problem which was it wouldn't keep the time and everytime it was turned on it was midnight last year some day!  It has now got used to the time maybe something to do with one of the settings I changed and maybe not who knows?

I also found the blog mentioned in this thread how to tune up your Hudl very welcome and I have used it to my advantage.

Another thumbs up for the forum and you folk on it for the help.

Regards Chris

Hmmm, rapidly beginning to think chrome is severely limited given it's the bloody home team! (On android phone/tablet).

There has to be a better browser ouot there!

I use Firefox.

Regards Chris

Mike, you can swipe quickly and it'll spin to the top or bottom.

I'm trialling the Dolphin browser (on my iPhone) at the moment and it seems pretty good. In some respects slicker than safari.

That has the top toolbar quick navigation. Doesn't have backwards swipe though.

No harm in trying it though.
