  • I'm a big fan of the iPad, but anything at your budget will be quite dated. That leaves you with either Android or Windows to choose from, and you also need to decide whether you want full size 10"

  • Do not get Samsung galaxy tab 3. Biggest load of ****e ive ever bought

  • The Hudl 2 is the best "small" tablet at that price.

If you are referring to this

that is an old model (2 generations out of date), based on the long since discontinued iPad2. Its successor is £30 more but that is also an old discontinued model. The current model (iPad Mini 3) is £420 from John Lewis.

As long as you don't mind owning a first generation Mini that will possibly not get to see the next iOS release (unlike the rest of the range), then its a good buy. However it is technology from several years ago.

If you can stretch to iPad go for it I'm on my second everything the same as the iPhone with plenty of apps, great for watching tv,films etc,if you don't want to spend too much the hudl is ok but smaller.

Myself and Mrs Goldfinger both have iPhones and I have just bought my self an ipad Mini and a ipad air for the wife, wonderful piece of kit.

You can't beat an iPad in my opinion. They are the best at what they do.

However, they're simply just not in your budget. Get a Hudl2. Battery life isn't as great as the iPad but then its a fraction of the price. Download Nova Launcher and it gets rid of all the Tesco rubbish on the desktop - makes it feel a bit snappier too.

It's a really good little tablet. I bought one to use as a Sonos remote. It's permanently plugged in and wall-mounted in my bedroom. Would happily use it for surfing/movies at home - although it's not a lot bigger than my iPhone 6+ so I don't bother. Not sure I'd bother taking it on a longhaul flight due to the battery - but for what it sounds you want, I think it'd be perfect.

Oh, and if you have any clubcard points you can double them up against a Hudl2 too.

I bought my son  a Hudl2 for Christmas, it is a great tablet (nearly as good as my Sony Z ultra) it does everything you ask of it and for a cracking price.

The only difference between the Mini 2 and 3 is the touch ID sensor, but I totally agree that original Mini is to be avoided.

Yes you are right........suits me because sadly, I too am technology from several years ago!

£30 off Kindle Fire 7HD right now.

Only 16Gb which is a bit small.

Tesco Hudl has an SD crad slot for expansion the Fire doesn't.

Yeah I was doing some research last night and noticed that. Was a bit weary of the Hudl as being a "Tesco" brand and some saying they were orientated more towards kids so I was looking for something I knew the name of but they do appear to have some decent reviews.

At the moment I think I'm pretty much in a toss up between the fire HD7 or the hudl 2.

The hudl has expandable memory and is around £20 dearer which isn't much, kindle is cheaper, not expandable but as I already have an Amazon account is one less person that has bank details etc.

I know the fire uses Amazon App Store which isn't as great but for what I need it'll deliver.

Does the hudl use google play?

Yes.

I'm pretty sure you can get the fire to run the play store.

Most things are in the Amazon store app store.

The main omissions are some of the TV channel apps

TBH I think the Hudl is the better deal. Bigger screen, expandable and not much dearer.

Tesco has been flogging some Hudl cases for as little as £2 recently so accessories are cheap.

Ok thanks pretty much made my mind up to get fire HD now I'm back to thinking hudl again :wall:

I think either are excellent tablets in this price bracket. My Dad has the last generation 7" Kindle fire HDX and It is very impressive.

Just to throw another brand in the mix we have two Archos tablets an 80 Cobalt and a 97 Cobalt and both are great - can highly recommend them!

Ok think I'm gonna go get the hudl on the weekend.

Unless you plan to subscribe (and use) Amazon Prime streaming video the Hudl is a better deal.

I got my Fire 7 HD (3rd gen so not the current one) for £60 which I think is a fair price, I think I'd have been disappointed had I paid £130 for it.

Don't forget, clubcard points double against the Hudl.

Mannyo and Dr Zoidberg:

I was interested in what you both had to say about my purchase and did some more research. Thanks for the feedback. As a result I have spent a few more of my hard earned cash and upgraded to a later iPad mini..............Incidentally, John Lewis have been brilliant. My new tablet will be delivered for free tomorrow and they will pick up the old one. No issues. No fuss.

Cheers again boys for loosening my wallet!
