Clay Bar recommendations please

Featured Replies

As above I'm looking for a new clay bar used the autoglym one and was impressed with it but find it difficult to grip ...probably a silly question but is there a holder that you can get for them?

Also if anyone can advise on how best to treat stone chips on the bonnet! Only a few but they bug me!

TIA

The Farecela clay mit is very popular and a doddle to use too as an alternative.

I'm ising a clay mitt from Liquid Elements. Very impressed with it.

Bilt Hamber is my clay of choice if I decide to not use my mitt. :)

As already said

There is no 'holder' for clay

With practice you shouldnt drop it...Bilt Hamber Auto Clay is the best IMO

As Ade says, you may find the 'Farecla Clay Mitt' better meets your needs

Another +1 for the "clay mitt" solution buddy!

Both the Farecla and Liquid Elements examples are top quality and easy to use

I prefer the old fashioned way, Bilt Hamber regular for me.

As for your chips, the cheapest solution is to get some touch up paint, then dab the paint in with a fine artists brush or a cocktail stick.

Great advice above, I find my clay cloth much easier to handle and takes about 20 mins to clay the whole car. It's a real step forward for me.

As for stone chips, a friend Who is a smart repair man showed me a technique. Basically, using your touch up paint, decant a blob onto a a flat clean surface (i used an old spreadable butter lid) then using a piece of masking tape folded into a triangle making a sharp point, dab the sharp point into the paint and allow the paint to flow from the masking tape point into the chip. Works a treat for me, much easier and more accurate than enything else I've tried.

Apologies for the spelling mistakes. I'm terrible at typing on my phone!!!

Thanks Neil

I'm going to try the cocktail stick approach when doing an audi tt in the next few weeks. Seen a couple of videos of it being done fairly successfully. :)

Going to have to try this and see how it compares to my cocktail stick method

Nice one

Thanks for the tip

I used to use Bilt Hamber or Zaino but now use a clay cloth almost all the time now

Nice one. Let us know how you get on.

Fancy making a short vid to show how you do it as that sounds much better than using the brush that comes with the touch up or a cocktail stick.

I would love to bud, but I had surgery on my foot 3 days ago and it will be in plaster for 3 months. Sorry pal

No worries. Keep taking the tablets and I hope you make a speedy recovery. Ade

Thanks Ade, much appreciated.

As long as your hands are fine what's the problem?

But seriously Speedy recovery bud.

cant say im a clay expert but i've used the autobrite fine stuff and it did the job.  If you can polish after in case of possible marring then mitts and cloths will save time and be easier to keep hold of.  Cant say I found holding on to the clay too tricky though.  Hope you dont think im taking the proverbial, but did you watch a vid on the net first to see how to use it, and were you using enough lubrication?  (oh Matron)

  • 2 weeks later...

Currently trying the auto-finesse kit and I'm pretty happy with the outcome and the clay bar does what it needs todo. Like what's been said, clay bar is just clay bar at the end of the day.... I don't find any difference between them apart from size, thickness etc

Some Clay bars are designed to be used with soapy water ( BiltHamber), others with a QD lube

Size...I cut mine into small pieces

Another vote for Bilt Hamber Regular Clay and the classic method with spray lube.

I have never liked the idea of using a black clay mitt.  Everyone I have seen with them works far too fast.

White clay shows how much the clay surface has become contaminated and then you can fold and offer a clean surface to the paintwork.  I understand that you can dip your clay mitt into the lube/shampoo/water but noone can tell me that they know the surface has released all the lumps of hard tar etc.

They work far better than youve been lead to believe Mark

However, I always decontaminate with Tar remover and Iron Fallout first, that way it minimises risk

You can literally hear the paintwork getting smoother...I highly rate Clay Mitts
