Blowing up canton speaker - possible?

Featured Replies

Got the vrs booked back in the dealer for the rattle in the nsf door when the bass kicks in on certain tracks (since the Columbus 0390 software seemed to improved mid range and door speak response). The sound is generally ok but starts to rattle on bass especially when you get upto motorway speeds - definetly from the speaker area but sounds like something almost resting against the cone.

I remember killing speakers back in the day in my fiesta mk1 after upgrading the head unit to a tape player is it likely that the canton speaker have gone pop with the standard Columbus / canton - or would it be crackly at lower volumes also? It was a demo car for 3k miles and 3 months so probably had some stick early days.

If so would this be a warranty thing - Car is sept 14 with14k miles on.

It is possible yes.

If the damage to the bass is minor, it will only manifest itself at higher volumes.

And all amps are capable to blow a speaker, either by too much effect or too little.

Ironically an underpowered amp is more damaging to speakers.

"Clipping" the top and bottom off the waveform, rather than smoothly driving it forwards and backwards.

You could argue that the amp should be designed to run safely throughout it's volume range, so a damaged speaker must have been faulty. Good luck...

Thanks guys, thought it was possible but hoping the system would be designed to match as you say. guess the argument is 'fit for purpose' as you don't upgrade to canto to listen to radio 4 at low volume.

Problem is, it's not a diy thing to get behind the grille to see if it's just something loose or not.

I picked up my vRS (with Canton) on Friday and I've noticed this...Even when someone is talking on the radio if the voice is anyway bassy there is a rattle from th edrivers door lower speaker area...I guess it'll be a trip to the dealer...Anyone any ideas before I resort to that?

Surely as said before the amp fitted should be designed for the speaker system?

It probably is. But making that a failsafe system would still be hard without limiting the volume too much.

Don't wish you/think it is an issue due to too loud volume settings.

I recently enjoyed some uncompressed tracks at "adequate" levels and the speakers played well.

I lean towards some assembling issue, rather than a faulty project/matching between amp and speakers.

Did you get this sorted? Mine been in for second service today, and i complained about the rattle from the speaker again - wasn't expecting much but they have apparently changed the speaker, certainly (fingers crossed) seems to be fixed.

I was surprised that they must have had a canton speaker in stock, hence wondering if this is a known issue or something - i did tell them when i booked that i wanted it sorted but can't imagine they ordered a speaker in just in case.

Hi

Probably too late but mine is in Carrs today (it went in yesterday so maybe that is the spare part!) and tomorrow to try and get the DAB working properly. It is the same spec as yours I think. MIB1 Columbus Estate with Canton. Mine is the the L&K. since I folded the rear floor way, my Canton has been Fab. You are welcome to compare the sound if they will let you. They can always ring if they need permission.

I think this is probably a difficult balance for Skoda.

The build quality of the door trim parts are probably not the best so to limit problems they original bass output from the head units.

Then there were lots of complaints about audio quality so they eventually caved in & increased the levels in newer headunit software.

Not long after its been released & it seems quite a few people are having reporting issues with the door trim & speakers...

doh...

Thanks Garnett, hopefully they'll sort the DAB finally - mine did cut out for a mile or so when i pass cullompton coming home the other day but came back when you get to the bit where theres the police layby thing where it has access to the side road if you know where i mean. The vRS gets serviced at Murrays plymouth as its via work but the wifes Scout is from Carrs so will get serviced there - in two years time! We got it via the salesman Dale Webb there, he seems ok but will be interested in how service team compares - their moving in the near future to a new site near marsh barton park and ride / makro somewhere.

I think it was the speaker, but it did only seem noticeable or blew after the software / bass upgrade - got a few 'b piller buzz/rattles' but no where near as annoying as the rattling / flappy speaker.

Just an update on this post in case anyone else has a problem - just has drivers side speaker replaced for the same issue (but now at 90k miles), too be fair carried out under (extended) warranty. Would have cost 136quid but if i hadn't had the warranty skoda were offering 45% good will on that price. They also checked the output from the columbus as were surprised to be replacing the second speaker (i honestly don't play overly loud music!)
