Leaking coolant through expansion spout

Featured Replies

Sorry if this goes over stuff but read every thread going and just wanted some more advice.

So I'm leaking coolant through the expansion spout. This is under normal driving and not just when being booted. I also noticed some steam coming from there today on about a 10mile run..

Not had the light come on yet but its deffo loosing some.

At the beginning of the year but not in my ownership it had headgasket done and at the same time loads of stuff replaced, thermostat, waterpump etc etc. So I'm hoping to rule out HG. Also had pd150 bolts fitted.

I've got a new expansion tank on order so I'll try that and then I'll try and new cap. What else should I be looking at?? Rad looks ok and I can't see any leaks from there. Top hose is reasonably hard read somewhere that this makes a difference but can't find the thread now.

Any ideas?? Not had the car long and this is a little disappointing.

if needed i got a good engine 30 day warranty

Mate, I was hoping it was something simpler than that seen as it had £1200 spent on it at the beginning of the year.

I have had a dodgy expansion tank I bought from ebay before that leaked at the expansion tank spout, just bought one from the Skoda main dealer and it was fine after that, hope you just have a dodgy tank as well mate.

Ive got none genuine tank on mine and ive noticed mine is leaking from spout, gona try genuine tank and new header cap before anything else.

If the coolant system is still pressurised in the morning when the car is stone cold then the HG wasn't done properly and has gone again.

Sorry, but it's better to know than clutch at straws.

Will check the pressure...Should it let off no pressure or hiss whatsoever??

Was done at a bosch service centre so you'd hope it was done correct.

I could go for a 150 mile drive in mine with a range of driving, turn the engine off, wait 30 seconds and take the cap off and would get a little hiss.

Not that I recommend doing that mind, not if you fear a cooling problem.

Yes pressure in the system this morning..I'll put the new tank on as I've bought it now but am I swaying towards hg failure again?? Might try tightening up the bolts.

None whatsoever.

Edit, just saw your post, take it back to the Bosch service centre where the work was done and ask for it to be redone under warranty, you may be the new owner but the work on the car is still guaranteed, I assume you have a copy of the bill as part of the history bought with the car?

Yeah got all the bills etc...its in oxford and I'm in Brum so not the closest. I'll whack the new expansion tank on later when I pick it up and then otherwise I better give them a call and see what the procedure is. Probably worth me getting it sniff tested locally don't you think??

Some threads have said it can be the rad?? Anychance this is the problem.

I've got this problem too... I know its the head Gasket on its way... Mine only does it under heavy load (i.e. Motorways / Racing) Ive had it sniff tested a few times with nothing.. I make it a habit to de-pressurise the system once a week for normal running. Can stomach the £1000 to repair it at a garage. Going to try and tighten the Headbolts 1/8th Turn and see if it helps at all.. if not then I'm gonna have to bite the bullet on it.

Are you just opening the expansion tank to de-pressurise....If the hg hadn't been done already I'd be ok with it but the fact is was only done not so long ago makes me a little mad.

Garage is saying warranty is not transferrable on vehicle ownership

Oh yeah? see how trading standards feels about that one!

If not throw it back at the previous owner and tell him to help you sort the garage out or you'll be wanting a refund from him.

Would be impossible to get money back from private sale an previous but yes I will take the appropriate other routes if necessary. There a bosch service centre so am now in contact with the people who oversea them. I've changed the expansion bottle to a genuine one to see if that helps. Otherwise I'll take to a local garage to check for gasket problem and go from there.

To bring this thread back rather than starting a new one.

I have what looks like a leak from the expansion bottle on the left hand side - where it looks like the top half clips onto the bottom?

Can a new tank/cap solve this?

I was worried it was HG but aside from very small coolant loss - we are talking max to minimum in months - i have no other symtoms.

The car is used every day on the motorway and if left overnight or something there is no pressure what so ever in the system so thats a good sign.

It had a new radiator a year ago and cambelt/water pump was done in June.

Euro car parts see full new bottles for about £8.

Thanks Hutchy, do you think this could be the problem then? Or is there anything else I should look at?

IMO... Coolant should never need to be touched between services or than changed every couple of years.

If your loosing it, there is probably a problem with something, thermostat, blocked rad, head gasket or whatever it may be.

Go for a bit of a drive about, floor it once or twice to get it's really hot, then slowly open the coolant cap, you should only get a small hiss from the bottle. If you get much more than a small hiss or loose coolant id be tempted to say head gasket.

Be careful removing it if it has a lot of pressure in as it may well over flow and burn you, so only do what you feel is safe.

I did a thread to do with this same problem.after a pressure test found the fault.

So anyways brought a new tank plus cap from gsf for total cost of £17 What a waste that was.

It was only on 2 weeks.and it was f@#ked so brought proper parts from dealer ok dearer but its working fine even under full load.

Never used gsf, but I've fitted tones from eurocarparts, including my own and not had one issue.

Something that wasn't ****ed from ECP? That must be a first tbh

I changed bottle but was still head gasket...See if you have pressure in there in the morning when its all cold as this is a good sign that hg is at fault.
