Headlights on auto, when do the turn on main beam?

Featured Replies

In the last days Ive noticed something that annoys me abit.

When having the lightswitch on Auto, the car seems to switch from DRL to mainbeam in the evening, even if the suns is still up.

Are there workaround on this?

Where I live it wont get dark again untill august, all I will be needing are DRLs.

You can set the sensitivity for switch on via the touchscreen.  On my Amundsen unit its the "Car" button, followed by the Cogs settings icon, then "Light".  Gives the option for "Switch-on time" of:

  • Early
  • Medium
  • Late

Switching it to late will delay switch on as much as possible.

You can change the sensitivity in one of the menus (car - setup - lights) or something like that.  Keep in mind though that just because it's light, doesn't necessarily mean that visibility is good.  This is what the lights will be compensating for.

I have it on late, they still turn on around 9 in the evening.

And they do it even if Im driving in sunlight.

This seems to be case on all VAG cars. The Toyotas I met only had DRLs.

Don't the drl's stay on even if the lights are switched to off?

I think so. So that is a possible solution. I just think its wierd that the time of day overrides the actual lightconditions.

My previous passat didn't do it but it was a pre-mqb platform car

All newer vag cars, and some mercs, I met yesterday evening had their mainbeams and rearlights on.

I must experiment a bit more with this.

You should have your lights on in evening when sunny, if the sun is behind you at this time of year you will be hard to spot or if been followed and could get rear ended

I know, but soon we have sun 24hrs a day. It wont Start to get dark untill the end of august. And in the summer the sun doesnt go low like it does further South.

OP, its not the sensertivity of the sensor but, the angle its fitted at, we in the UK suffer fom this in winter due to low sun angle.

That kinda makes sence. That should mean that main beams should not trigger at all in a couple weeks.

I had to turn mine on in the rain the other day, first time i noticed there is no indication of whether the lights are on or not ?

Both my Superb and Fabia had a green warning light , but my Octy doesnt have one

On a vRS if you set your light to auto they will come on with the wiper.  There's a light of the switch which glows green indicating your lights are on.

Even intermittent ie rain sensing ?

so the switch lights up with the car switches the lights on ?

Its the same on the l&k. And you can see it on the nav screen if you have it. The map will change to night colours (if enabled).

Richf: the lights turn on if the wipers runs for 5 minutes i think.

I have my wipers and lights both set to auto, when it starts raining and the wipers come on the headlights switch on about 30sec later, the drl's turn off and the green symbol on the light switch comes on to indicate headlights are on.

Just this little light ? Bit rubbish really easy to miss . My Columbus doesnt turn to night mode when the lights are switched on guess it uses the light sensor

Why do you need to know ? untill its bloody obvious cause you can't see without them, whether their on or not is not for your benefit, its for other road users !

Sorry there are somethings in life I just don't need to know and this is one of them.

You need to know they are working ! Other cars tell you , we have three cars all with auto lights and this is the only one that doesnt indicate that they are on with a dash light , even our '09 Superb did !

Rear fog lights are not for your benefit but there is a clear warning when thats on

I think what you ment to say is " you be happier knowing when the car is telling them to work" during twighlight there is only one sure fire way of knowing if your light are on and working.

Dash light illumination is obviously a bit ole sckool for the MBQ platform or so it would seem.

Pretty difficult to see in your pics alright, I presume they change when you adjust the dash brightness as well? I have my dash lights set at 70% and you can see the symbols pretty clearly.
