Hi Brisky forum.

 

Still driving my 61 plate vRS. Only just about to tick over to 25k miles. No issues so far, uses a bit of oil but not excessive.

 

So I've been driving my car now for nearly a year out of warranty. I had considered changing it, but it doesn’t make financial sense for me right now, so I think I will keep it for another year or so.

 

Just recently I have started to get a little nervous. It worries me that if something goes wrong with the engine or DSG I will be up **** creek without a paddle. A big repair bill would be disastrous for me.

 

Anyway, the question really is has anyone got experience of any warranty companies? Would they recommend any? What's it like when you need to make a claim?

 

It says they cover all mechanical failures, but would they perhaps try to wriggle out due to the known issues with the Fabia vRS?

 

Warranty Wise have quoted me £28.33/month which I'm reasonably happy with, that was down from an original quote of £40/month! They went to that without trying, so I might be able to get it lower.

 

Any advice or comments welcome.

Whatever you do keep your service history with Skoda and you'll probably get goodwill

 

I dont know if the Skoda backed warranty is still available to you , might be worth it for a year

I'm in a similar position, except that I currently have the Skoda-approved extended warranty from Car Care, which expires 28/09/15. Warranty Wise wouldn't provide an online figure - their website requested that I phone for a quote. Warranty Direct quoted and then chased up by telephone - asked them to call me back in August as I will be in a position to make a decision then (I'd only gone online to explore my options at this early stage!). Like the OP, my concern is that in the event of the engine going nuclear they play the 'known issue' card.

 

Agree with Rich - given my low mileage (26k) and full dealer service history and I'm almost tempted to bank the cost of a two-year warranty in the expectation that Skoda would make some sort of contribution.

 

I'm loath to part with the car given the mileage, condition, extras I have and that it meets my needs perfectly.

"The Breakdown or Failure Due to Wear and Tear of a Part of your Vehicle with inherent, common and regularly occurring manufacturing faults which were well publicised (such as Google Internet search) at the date you purchased this Plan together with any Part requiring replacement due to it being up-dated, superseded, re-designed or recalled by the manufacturer where you have no proof that the Part has been previously replaced."

Yes, worrying! I'll check Warranty Direct's when I get home, but I'd imagine it'll be very similar.

 

Probably better putting the money towards a new engine...

It would probably be worth someone who is considering taking out extended warranty from the Skoda approved Car Care, Warranty Wise or Warranty Direct contacting them in writing to confirm exactly what they would and would not cover.

 

Such a statement might even force Skoda to confirm what they do and do not consider to be a "failure due to wear and tear of a part of the vRS with inherent, common and regularly occurring manufacturing faults".

Be aware a member here has bought a used vRS just recently with a Dealers provided Warranty,they are a VWG. Main dealer, it has engine problems and they are trying to say not interested, know faults. Yet they put a Warranty on and sold the car with a Warranty. Awaiting to here where this one is going.

you can buy wear and tear warrenties.... I considered one on my old grande punto when it went out of warrenty , it was with warrenty direct , and was specifically including wear and tear ... so for example if the gearbox failed at 100k due to wear, they would replace..... only thing was it was £450 , and considering the total ammount of warrenty work done on the car over 3 years was replacing the wheel bearings, i never bothered....

 

I may well look at it when mine is out, but then again, I will be looking at modding the engine, so probably pointless....

 

I have checked out flea bay over the last year, and gearboxes, superchargers, turbos, ect are all available second hand for a few hundred quid....

will everything fail? or is there a chance one item will fail? will a replacement for that item cost less than the warrenty? hhhhmmmm that supercharger is £250.

Decision time for me in three months - mid August - need at least a month's MOT if punting to WBAC (will be who offers the most between them, WWAC and TCB).

WBAC have upped the offer to me 3 times in 3 weeks. Still at £1.100 less than I can sell it to a private buyer for.

To stand any chance of selling it privately in August I'd realistically need to put it through an MOT and make allowance for a service being due in October. I'm not too fussed about getting extra money via a private sale - it would only be a grand max. anyway.

That is like a catch-all very much open to interpretation. I think I'll certainly not take up Mr Q. Wilson's recommendation.

I don't have the full Warranty Direct policy wording but under Significant Exclusions and Limitations it states -

"The policy does not cover any pre-existing faults."

Now, if you have a perfectly functioning engine that has never given you any problems and it suddenly goes bang one day I don't see how they could wriggle out unless they're saying that every vRS engine has a pre-existing fault - in which case they shouldn't sell you the policy in the first place!

Easy one buy the 2 year warranty from skoda under car care ltd, I was undecided 6 months after it expired then the thought of something going wrong prompted me into paying £600 in December unfortunately this month I had a clutch pack replaced which would have cost £1200 [emoji106]

That's the one I've got at the moment - expires 28th or 29th September.

I have car care plan. Cost me £180 a year for a 1.6tdi. Paying 10 x £18 monthly. They replaced a exhaust temp sensor with no hassle but I had to pay the dealer £55 diagnostic fee. But I did expect that as it was in the T&C`s. They do a different warranty when your car is over 5 (less comprehensive). I rung first an asked if they covered known tdi problems like the egr and exhaust sensors. They seem to be the preferred skoda dealer supplier of ext warranties.

Actually  I did it through the civil servants motoring association (CSMA) website because being a member I got 13 months cover for the price of 12.

Does anyone know what the theoretical worst case scenario is for vRS repair costs?? What is it that actually fails for people that have had issues?

 

I am curious to know what I could be facing should the **** get acquainted with the fan...

I think the worst case scenario is about £4k for a new engine.

However, if you don't have a heavy oil user, watch the spark plugs, fill it with 99 and service it to schedule an exploding engine is odds against (that's what I'm hoping anyway :) ).

Well that would certainly hurt!

 

It has a full Skoda service history on schedule. Always had 99. Spark plugs to be changed next month with a major service.

I'm in a similar situation - car is a 60 plate on 25,600, but I've got the Skoda-approved extended warranty till the end of September. It'll be decision time come August - I want to keep the car (I've got the money sitting there to buy a replacement but I'm a MKII vRS fan) so thinking of hoping for the best and taking out a further warranty with Car Care or going with Warranty Direct as a fall back.

When I originally bought the car (when it was a year old) I intended to keep it for two years but now approaching four.

If you have had the car long enough, know it well, know how it was serviced and maintained then maybe just save yourself 

over £500 on the 48 month Skoda Approved Extended Warranty.

 

The greatest majority are all good & without any issues.

I'm being quoted anywhere between £6k and £6.7k (with no doubt a bit of knocking down to come) from WBAC and WWAC - depreciation isn't brilliant (I didn't expect it to be), but it's ok (and considering they were cheap cars in first place not much to lose in terms of £££). If my engine went and it wasn't covered by warranty I'd probable stump up the £4k (as mad as that may seem). I knew what I was getting into from day one - that's the risk of car ownership - and vRS engines aren't the only ones that fail.
