FWD vs RWD in the road noise contest

Featured Replies

The last rwd car i had was a Sierra 1.8td and it was much quieter than any FWD car, ive not tried a NICE RWD for ages, a BMW 733i was the last, not sure if i could hear the clock tick tho

Had a BMW 428 coupe for a couple of days recently as a loan car when they were 're-testing' my summer fit alloys at the dealer I got my Superb from.

Drivetrain was certainly quiet but the 2.0 turbo engine was noisy and interior very cheap and cheerful by comparison. GPS screen looked like a cheap plastic afterthought stuck on the dash.

If you want quiet go electric. I drove a Renault Twizy a few weeks ago. No engine noise, no drivetrain noise. Freaked me out.

The howling laughter of the general public and my terrified screams of terror were earsplitting, however.

And yes I had the model without the optional doors...

I once travelled in the rear seat of a Twizy, and I can't remember anything as uncomfortable or frightening outide of a funfair. I have driven FWD cars for over 40 years and we have never had RWD except as loan cars. I have never noticed RWD to be quieter. The only time I have ever spun a car just by turning out of acside road was on a RWD. Much rather have the characteristic understeer of FWD!

I like the noise my car makes

You wont find Rolls Royce or Bentley going FWD will you......

Why? People said that about BMW since time began. Theoretically fwd, without the prop shaft running under the cabin to the rear axel should be quieter?

I think its a weight distribution matter, engine/box/diff/drive shafts all by your feet resting on the front end....with RWD your leaving the noise, with FWD your driving into it

t'aint right, t'aint proper
