S4 or 335d

The older 335d with rwd is much more fun

Arse out everywhere.

Although it would be nice to have the new xdrive it would be cool if you could switch between 4wd and rwd

I recently had a nearly new 330d x drive out and also the 530d non x drive, not too far away from the 335d. Both were extremely capable and the straight six diesel even sounded nice. As someone else said the 8speed auto box is very nice and very quick too.

I could not find anything in the VAG factory that I would trust without a decent warranty, they seem to suffer a few transmission woes.

For my money the BMW gets my vote and the xdrive gives better 0-60 times but also all-round all years grip!

The Audi's with the bi-turbo engine (320hp) all use the same 8sp auto as the BMW's (as do some VW's), so I guess gearbox reliability is the same, though the Audi's engine has 20 more torques and 7 more horses.

At present the A4/5 is only available with the lower powered V6 diesel, but the new model may get the bi-turbo (320hp).

Don't imagine that the 272 hp Audi V6 diesel is a slouch (245 isn't) or the 330d's and I think engine wise the Audi V6 diesel is easily a match for the BMW's straight 6.

I read in Auto Express online that there isn't a 3.0tdi, at least at launch, for the new A4 (B9?) :(

My A4 was the standard 3.0tdi, reasonably quick, although not as quick as my 3.0 diesel Merc. Tbh my A4 didn't feel that much slower than the S4, it would lose a drag race with one, but cross country I don't think there would be that much in it. I would have loved the Bi-turbo in an A4 though. I have read that the power delivery is a bit peaky however, not something that's levelled at the 335D.

Bit surprised at that as the Audi's and BMW's max torque figure (slightly higher in the Audi) are both very close:

BMW: 630 Nm's between 1500 and 2500 rpm

Audi: 650 Nm's between 1400 and 2800 rpm

If anything, the Audi should feel a bit stronger, though in reality at present it's only available in the SQ5 or the A6, so maybe in a lighter 3-series it feels stronger.

5 series vs A6? - Audi has more torque + more power, but also 4 wheel drive, so in reality, no difference.

Maybe it takes the Audi a tad longer to spool up fully or drops off quicker at the top end? I've read it in a couple of online reviews on this engine. I don't think it was a problem, just an observation by the testers.

Buggers only offered £9k for my Octavia vRS. They wouldn't budge on the sticker price on the 335d either! I suggested that as the LCI model is out they ought to drop it a little. No chance.

Am going to stay silent for a few days to see if they come back to me.

A quick search on parkers suggest they should offer at least 10 for mine. I have e mailed them that quote to see if they get back.

Very surprised. My dealer was offering big discounts on the 335D only a couple of months ago. Broadspeed are offering over £9K off on the 335D

A BMW dealership might just be punting a Skoda off to auction.

Parkers prices are just rubbish really, and WBAC and add on the extra you can get selling without them as the middle man is nearer the price,

and more often what you get offered.

Asking prices on 2012 Octavia vRS is no real indication of what some are being sold for.

Maybe a Seat dealer will offer more on the vRS to shift one of their depreciation disasters.

When I tried to trade my Merc in to BMW they got a price form a trader they use. Even though the car was comparable to a 330D/335D and just under 3 years with a great spec, they wouldn't touch it as they only have BMW on their forecourt. :(

I eventually sold it directly to Merc and got £1,500 more from them than the BMW offer. It can't hurt to go to Skoda and asking if they would like to buy the car Khurram, The problem with book prices is there are a couple of books that the trade mainly use, but even then, they will alter their prices based upon what they think a car is actually worth. hence I got a better offer from Merc on my 350CDi as they knew it's real value, not just the book price.
