Tuning.End of the road?

Featured Replies

1.8T and 1.9TD obviously given a lot of people pleasure in tuning. As Redbaron said though(read this somewhere too)the new 2.0fsi turbo not going down well with tuners and suggests Ford engines offering a better bet?

I know nothing about the new diesels and how they differ from the 'old' PD.Will people be buying 140 bhp 2.0 diesels and fiddling instead? Are there no good options for petrol addicts in the line ups?

Don't understand the problems with the new engines.Just wondering if the hardcore will start looking around other manufacturers

Interestingly both Ford and Subaru are looking at moving to 2.5l turbocharged lumps in their petrol line ups, so I wonder if more cc's will be the direction for other companies too?

It's swings and roundabouts really. At the end of the day the 1.8 20VT wasnt the most tuneable engine 10 years ago - because it wasn't around. Something else was (Ford Cosworth lump?).

I hear the Focus ST's Volvo derived engine will be fairly tunable.

The trouble with more CC's is the general increase in emissions and a reduction in MPG.

Very tunable www.volvotuning.co.uk can take the S60 R to 340 BHP with just a remap and the T5 to 320 IIRC (ST Engine).

The problems tuners are having with the 2.0T were more to do with the new ECU rather than the engine itself. However tuners now seem to be getting round it and there'll soon be alot more available. Just look how long the 1.8T has been around yet there's still new developments and tuners managing to squeeze more and more out of them. It's just like with games consoles, programmers seem to get the very best out of them just before they are replaced as they learn more about how the machine works and more efficient ways of programming them.

CC1/2 is a great example of the above.

I'd agree with that, forgeting the power increases that CC gives the more impressive aspect is that it actually makes the car smoother and improves throttle response. This is purely due to how they program the ECU, obviously though the way they achieve this is a well guarded secret.
